My wife and I traveled to China in 1980 with the William Hall Chorale, and Jester Hairston came with us as guest conductor. The group sang this song and Elijah Rock. The Chinese people loved Jester who was 80 at the time. He was one of the sweetest people I ever met. Fare thee well Jester until That Great Gettin’ Up Morning.

This is the most soulful solo I think I’ve ever seen. I discovered this video several years ago and I still listen to it frequently. The first time I heard it, I found myself sitting in the edge of my seat with tears falling. Mr. Apperwhite, thank you.

Donte, was just watching this and kept thinking the soloist looked familiar, then realized "that's Donte, my Jericho narrator!" Terrific performance of a great spiritual. Loved the way you (correctly) "preach" the solo part. - Jesse

I was showing this song to my wife as it is one of my favorites. She then said, “I know him, that’s Donte, I went to Biola with him”

This was the last song I sang with my favorite choir director. I'd give so much to have that recording but this is the closest I'll find online. Fantastic soloist. I'll say one thing though, our audience had a hell of a lot more energy hahaha

Great song and great singing. (The camera work gives me motion sickness, though.)

We have the soloist who is perfect, performing it right to style and then the choir comes in too fast with wide open vowels ruining it. a bit slower, longer vowels, a darker, more mature tone. It's a negro spiritual not a jamboree song. I was expecting banjos and jaw harps at any moment. For the choir, no explanation required, put your hands on your face until you can achieve that nice warm, long tone without the hands and voila! Different songs, styles, etc. require a different choice in your tonal pallet.

Solo is not getting the backing he deserves.

19, realizing the collision of 2 worlds at 2:20 😅... But big props to Brian, top right at 2:22. I've always appreciated this part because he clearly understood the assignment!
