  • Join us as we explore the stunning Ninigo Islands in Papua New Guinea, one of the most remote and beautiful places we’ve ever visited. During our short stop at Lau Island, we connected with the amazing local community, trading stories, goods, and even old kites to be repurposed for their traditional sailing canoes.
From touring the well-kept village to learning about their sustainable way of life, this visit was packed with unforgettable moments. We even witnessed the butchering of a turtle-a cultural practice that gave us mixed feelings but offered a deeper understanding of life in this part of the world.
Come along as we share this incredible experience in the heart of the Pacific!

Pip's commentary has become top tier! She's fluently using words that a lot of adults would struggle with saying/pronouncing! Once again, so awesome seeing your families interactions with the locals. Seemed like they all loved meeting, talking and spending time with you guys as well. Nothing but smiles on everybody's faces! Such hospitable people! They had their sail boats booking across the water too !!!! Amazing! 😀😀😀 Merry Christmas to your entire family!!!

I think trading for internet is just a sign of the times. I think your family does a very good job of establishing trade and not hand outs. I think your video does a very good job of showing the feeling of what you are experiencing, but I also understand what this probably means to them.
BTW, I have watched your family for a couple years now and you should be so proud of what you’ve achieved and the family you are! I am excited every week when you post a video! ❤

The smell of fresh bacon coming off your boat filling the lagoon, i'm surprised the whole village didn't come thinking it's Luau time! i love the ease and simplicity of the villager's stripped square lateen sail. wow you're really out there, the Far Out Family...

Boy, have I learnt something watching your guys in this video. Further to that "Australia's Secret Army" post I always wondered how these beautiful people managed to travel such vast distances transporting Australian Coast watchers and their bulky radio equipment from one place to another by canoe and sometimes a couple of hundred kilometres. The canoes had sails and could move fast with little effort, and they were substantial enough to carry people and their equipment. Just like the Fuzzy Wuzzys in PNG, we owe these beautiful island people so much, and thank our God, that we were able to reciprocate by keeping them free from the enemy.

They don't have much but they love to share what they have and I think by you sacrificing and or giving what you have to them is like it was in the old days called bartering. You didn't just expect everything for free but you had something to give for something to gain. When one considers that not so long ago you may have ended up on some of those PNG islands much like the turtle as they were cannibals! A dear old brother in Christ, Costas Makris - now gone to be with The Lord - was one of those who bravely took the Gospel to PNG in the 60's and some of his team lost their lives doing so!
The amazing book by Don Richardson, 'Lords of The Earth', gives an amazing insight into those dangerous days of taking The Gospel there and has an amazing chapter covering Costas Makris' events there also. Well worth reading as a family as it's a wonderful eye opener to the Saving Grace of The Lord Jesus within our lifetime amongst the very people you're amongst now!

As my family and I celebrate Christmas and the wonder of birth, we send you all our sincere wishes that, wherever you may be this Nativity and New Year season, each of you and all whom you love continue to be blessed with the health, wisdom, love, and sense of fulfillment which you share with us online.
We are created to do great things, often in small ways. Each of you show each day how you meet that responsibility day by day. Seeing you in sharing communion with those you meet in every corner of our world illustrates how good parenting, the engendering of responsibility and love in those we are trusted to bring up, and the non-judgemental approach to sharing, are the core values of the full and joyous lives for which our Creator designed us.
The cover illustration of this video touched me. Like yours, my family truly values that which former Canadian PM, Joe Clark, called our "Community of Communities". A melding of traditions and beliefs, not a merging of them.
Australia, Kenya, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and other places indicate how this works better than the idea of the "melting pot". My youngest grandson, Týr, said last weekend that our family is more like Christmas dinner (goose, potatoes, dressing, pigs in blankets, parsnips, etc) each playing a part in creating a whole, whilst remaining distinct, than it is like Christmas pud, where we know it's made of lots of things, but we cannot recognise each of them as they lose their individual identity in the whole.
As with your progeny, sir and ma'am, often it is the youngest who make the most incisive observations.
So, from my family of mongrels, to yours: Nadolig Bendithiol (🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 my gramps, the Old Salt), Krismasi yenye baraka (🇰🇪 my late wife, and my 3rd son, d-i-law, and four grandsons), MEE-yo ma-ni-too o-KEE-si-kow (🇨🇦 my oldest, my Métis d-in-law and five grandsons), A blessed Yuletide (🇬🇧 my son, his American husband, and my two adopted (Icelandic) youngest grandsons), Shukufuku sa rata kurisumasu (🇦🇺🇯🇵 my daughter, my Japanese son-in-law and my six grom grandsons), and from me and my two graduate school and undergraduate youngest sons, "Fair winds and safe passage into and through the adventures to come". ❤🤱🎉

So Happy Days sails down the Pacific coast of Mexico, transits the Panama Canal, sails the Caribbean, sails up the Atlantic coast of North America to Canada, sails south again along the eastern seaboard of the US, transits the Panama Canal a second time, crosses the Pacific, visits many paradisiacal South Seas islands, then sails into the waters of PNG where Happy Days becomes a floating … Internet cafe. I did not have that on my Bingo card.

greetings from Norway Yes, sea turtles are protected animals and are covered by international conventions and legislation to ensure their survival. Most species of sea turtles are on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and several of them are classified as either "threatened" or "critically endangered."
This means that it is illegal to hunt, catch or harm sea turtles, and there are strict rules for trading in their products. In many countries it is also forbidden to disturb their rescue or breeding grounds. Conservation of sea turtles is important to protect these fascinating animals and preserve their natural habitats.
If you have questions about a specific legislation or a particular species, you can ask more precisely.

Super interesting. We just hope those laws don't apply to these beautiful people who understand the creature and know how to take only what they need and also do plenty of protecting of the beaches where they do nest to make sure this food source continues. It works for them to follow these traditions.

Its a food source there and part of the culture to harvest from the sea. They take to consume for the day. No mass killing for profit. Its their livelyhood and no one in their right mind should tell them what they should or should not eat. As they feed themselves without anyones help. Thank you to the Crew of SWS for a wonderful episode. Loved it.

The kites were expensive initially but these ones were well used and had the bladders repaired numerous times and kept failing so only the kite fabric was still useful. 😊

It may seem harsh but think of the slaughter factories for cattle or lamb and you do not see that? In a natural setting, taking one turtle say once a week is a far cry more humane than the countless cattle left as scraps at a McDonald's Restaurant!

Amazing; the things that we all have in common.
I'm with Archie when it comes to eating. Having choices contributes to my decisions for sure.
Bella was blessed/gifted in a way that they would gift their own daughter/niece (sweet 16 or something like that)??
Thanks for sharing all of that. Musk definitely is bridging the world together ❤.

Once you give to one person, they start coming out of the woodwork. Witch is fine. You run out of stuff to give away. Also Starlink is expensive to go online.
I remember watching Ben ans Ashley get bombarded when they were giving stuff to a village, that's a little scary, for me anyway
    God bless❤

Your trade was fair. The Hudson Bay Company would trade a musket, powder and ammo extra) when the Innuit trapper brought in enough furs to equal the height of the musket. Being fair the fur should have been hung beside the musket. The fair trade would have been to lay the musket down but they did not. This was the Whiteman stealing and on Turtle Island (known to you as North America) this went on all the time.

    • @sailingwithsix
      @sailingwithsix  หลายเดือนก่อน

Interesting. Did they use the muskets to kill the seals or polar bears? What did they need the guns for? Protecting themselves against the very men they traded with?

They only had enough turtle for their own use rather than unnecessary slaughtering. Not really different to lamb 🤷‍♀️ it's an emotional matter ❤

    • @sailingwithsix
      @sailingwithsix  หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes completely agree. We would probably be sad about a lamb too but feel indifferent if it's a fish because it's something we catch and eat more often.

As for how I feel personally about the trading… you clearly are trying to neither be a savior, nor exploit people. Thus I believe you did well.
As for the turtles, I believe that fundamentally, it is the same as other forms of meat. I believe that they are concerned with sustainability. All the same I see no issue with your family avoiding an invitation to share the meal.
