Incredible! At first, I was almost incredulous at how perfectly they were playing the song to match the studio version --- way amazing -- but then Lyle came in with his gorgeous piano solo and the improv and changes he brought in were incredibly satisfying. Have you guys seen Pat in concert? I saw the "Travels" tour, then the "Rejoicing" tour (at the Blues Alley club in Washington D.C.), then I saw the "Imaginary Day" tour in 1997. I love Pat's music!

I had the incredible privilege of hearing the PMG in Obras, Buenos Aires 1986. I am a professional musician. When they started playing, I was overtaken by a kind of emotion I had never experienced before. Tears started to flow on my cheeks and I was crying uncontrollably. I guess it was my body's reaction to the incredible level of musicianship level and clarity of these fellow musicians. I went through goosebumps, burps, chills ... you name it. That's when I knew I had found myself.

Pat's right arm really gets a workout in First Circle. Nick wants this fantastic song played at his funeral so here is to hoping he lives to be 103. My dear Nick you can find the sheet music to First Circle in the Pat Metheny Song Book for guitar. 🙏🏼✌🏼♥️ But no reading songs you have not done yet ok?

Really glad you reacted to this live version!!! I was fortunate to see The Pat Metheny Group four times back in the day and although each concert was amazing, it was definitely "First Circle" that brought the house down every time!!! Definitely miss Lyle 🙏 Again, great reaction to this!!

Great reaction NicknLex my favorite Lyle in the whole world. But gone way to soon. You should check out Lyle’s solo work Street Dreams and Fictionary. Pat and Lyle were brilliant together. I was lucky enough to see them 4 times. ❤️❤️

This is one my Favorite PMG songs- witnessed this live 1986 Austin Texas a the PAC (UT Campus) Theater. This band is able to do things live with a level of musicianship/performance that is unequalled! I saw PM in the Ric Beato Interview that he practices for hours and hours before every single show. That is a musical commitment to perfection that is not the usual. On Most days PM is my all time favorite guitar Player! Most Jazz or Fusion (or what ever want to call them) do not not communicate to me a spiritual level the way these guys do. There is something else in their music that makes you get emotional upon observing the beauty of it, there is this deep connection that is not lost in the virtuosity but rather enhanced and solidified from it. An amazing band with an amazing song. Thank you for sharing

Sometimes I wish I was born earlier so I could see the great bands of the seventies but when I think of the metheny group concerts I’ve seen,.. no way. I’m glad I’m just where I am!

My sister and I were in the front row and were the only 2 people that got invited back stage after the show as I already knew Lyle Mays and Paul Wertico . I have a ton of great memories and that evening with 80,000 people watching !

So glad you are back with Pat Metheny! I’ve seen him live over 40 times and this exactly why you go to live performances. Even though it’s the same tune, it can be completely different - different vibe, different performance.
Also, this summer, my daughter got married and she wanted suggestions about what song to use for our father/daughter dance. I suggested Pats tune “Letter From Home”. We loved it.

This was my wife and I first outing together (we’ve been married since). There were 4 downtown street blocks barricaded and there were several tens of thousands of people all around us standing in the street and listening to the music. My soon to be wife (a petite lady) was sitting on my shoulders all through the concert (I’m a linebacker) and everybody was so nice and so excited at the same time. Probably the best musical experience of our lives! Thanks for the memories!

Thank you, that was great! I'm glad you're up to listening to more Pat Metheny in the future, I was a bit disappointed that (understandably) you stopped listening to Metheny after so many tunes, but you said that you're done with Metheny forever. But I guess after some time off you're hopefully coming back with more Metheny stuff, because there is still alot more to discover with him.

Thank you so much for reacting to this live version of one of top three PMG pieces of all time. A great reaction. May Lyle Mays Rest in Shalom. May his work and memory always bless us. And yes, Lyle’s solo here was truly next level. Also, yeah, this piece always brings the goosebumps and the tears for me. There are a few other PMG pieces that do that to me also. But none more than this.

Music for the soul. I saw them many years ago in Stockhlom and then in Copenhagen when they were playing the songs from Secret stories. Thanks to you I`m finding new Metheny music to listen to. I might become a pain now... just heard a beautiful improvisation on a Samsung Galaxy ringtone by Dirty Loops. I have to figure out how to get you to react on your show...

This reminds me that it has been too long since I played any of my Metheny CDs. "First Circle" is a favorite. I'll mention that - if you haven't listened to it yet - the song, "San Lorenzo," specifically from the *live* double CD, "Travels," is a must-hear, especially for the Lyle Mays solo within this beautiful piece.

How cute you are. I saw them in Stockholm 1985, same setup (I think). Everybody was talking about them, because of the unexpected hit ”This Is Not America” with Bowie that was brand new at the time. They played it, with wordless song by Aznar. Amazing beauty. They also played ”First Circle”, of course. I think it’s in 26/8 or something like that. They were fantastic live, such brilliant musicians.

I’ve been watching you guys for some time now (what a beautiful music loving couple…) and I think it’s time you discover (if you had not done so yet…) a new artist, Michael Hedges. He died a few year ago, unfortunately at around 41-44 years old but he is a genius of the guitar and the curious part is that he plays Every Part of His Music with a Single Instrument… Either his Martin D-28 or another one that looks like three guitars in one… His first album and I believe his most legendary one is titled “Aerial Boundaries”. Please check first the song called “Spare change” and then the rest. You’ll be blown away by this amazing one-of-a -kind Artist. I will subscribe so please notify me when you’ve done your first reaction to his music. He is like the Mozart of the 21st Century..!!

Enjoying Lyle Mays the way you do, you may want to give a listen to Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett, both of whom were influences on his playing. That could take you down another jazz rabbit hole that you might enjoy too.

Hi Nick, hi Lex! Thanks for another great reaction video. Your reactions to Pat Metheny songs are the best.
My favorite Pat Metheny song is "Are You Going With Me?" In 2002 Pat traveled to Poland to record the album "Upojenie" with singer Anna Maria Jopek. In conjunction with recording the album they performed a concert in Warsaw. One of the songs performed that night was "Are You Going With Me?". I hope you check out the TH-cam video from that performance: th-cam.com/video/BLyMgxIASZA/w-d-xo.html
I find this beautiful and moving, and hope you do too.

    The music of our relationship...
Addicted to Love started it for Katrina and me.
Todd Rundgren's Love is the Answer was the song playing in the background as the Justice of the Peace spoke the vows.

Actually the version with the birds is a live performance, it just doesn’t have an audience
That one is the best version because the sound quality is the best and Lyle’s solo takes his original recording farther.

I believe that the greatest version of this extraordinary composition is the live performance of First Cirle in Holland with the Metropole Orchestra. It becomes a totally magical experience as it gains complexity. Like any true symphonic masterpiece, it becomes more beautiful with each audition.
