The chess24 Legends of Chess is the 4th stage of the $1 million Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour and features Magnus Carlsen and his predecessors as World Champion Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik. It consists of two stages, a 10-player preliminary, where each player plays each other once, followed by a knockout among the top 4. Prelim ties are played as 4-game rapid matches, while knockout ties are the best of 3 such matches. The prize fund is $150,000, with $45,000 for first place, while the winner also qualifies for the $300,000 Grand Final.
The time control is 15 minutes for all moves with a 10-second increment from move 1. The winner of a preliminary tie decided in rapid games gets 3 points. If the score is 2:2 an Armageddon game is played, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. A winner in Armageddon gets 2 match points, while the loser gets 1. The knockout format is the same except before Armageddon there are two 5+3 blitz games. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website: chess24.com/tour

As other people have mentioned, this disconnect wasn't the players' fault. Cloudflare (The site that hosts Chess.com) experienced an outage and major sites like Amazon and EA Sports were also affected. This wasn't an issue with the internet connection. The server hosting the game crashed.

Agad, there is a difference between the Armenia and Russia games. India's disconnect was because of the outage in the global Cloudflare servers, due to which other entities such as EA Sports & Amazon were also affected. Additionally, Nihal was in a drawish position and Divya was clearly winning and ready to launch a mating attack. In the Armenia game, the reason for the outage is not known and it was the Armenians who walked out of the second set. It had nothing to do with the Indian team. Both Russia and Armenia have their reasons to feel hard done but to imply that it was done to appease the Indian fans is unfair and incorrect. In the end, the decision is relatively fair.
Edit (adding more info): GM Srinath, the team India vice-captain, said on stream that the Russian captain had agreed to the decision of sharing the gold medal before it was announced, which makes Nepo's tweet even more dubious. Kosteniuk's tweet is dubious too -- since Russia's only "win" came after Koneru Humpy got disconnected because of the outage and only reconnected when 18 seconds were left. The comments from the Russian players leave a bad taste, especially since they had agreed to share gold in the first place.

  • @mridul6574
    @mridul6574 4 ปีที่แล้ว +177

The crucial difference between Armenia's case and India's case was that in Armenia's case it was a connection problem with the player.
Connection problems due to a player or the country's unpreparedness with the internet are not FIDE's responsibility and they cannot accomodate that. But a global network problem that affected chess.com servers is not the player's fault not unpreparedness on the team's part.
So there isn't hypocirsy. Maybe a more just decision would have been to have a rematch in all 3 matches affected by the connection issue. That is what Indian fans were asking for as well. India didn't ask to be handed the win. But since all matches unaffected by the connection were draws the current result isn't unjust either. (Yes Humpy lost but after losing considerable time due to network issues, so we can't say she wasn't affected)
Also even if you consider that Humpy was losing, Divya had a winning position and Nihal had a drawn game. So the result would have most likely been a draw anyway.

    • @vincerafaelcastro5778
      @vincerafaelcastro5778 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

They could have had a rematch between the 3 affected games and whoever wins, wins. A just action leaves no one unsatisfied, in that way Nepo wouldn't have anything to say against them.

Although I feel some would still have said that this gave India a second chance and initially Russian won. Again, this is FIDE's decision. India didn't ask to be handed the win. It was fair enough. Divya was winning, Nihal was almost equal, Humpy's game was on the edge. We might have the situation that India would have won the second round. So saying that it was just to please the fans is pure bs. Secondly, it was proven that the Internet connections were all good and there was a global outage at cloudfare. Armenia wanted to start the matches from the same position which wouldn't have been fair, while the Indian team didn't mention such thing in their appeal. Give the credit to Team India because we all knew that Russia were the favourites but holding them all for a draw in the first round was an astounding result. I don't know why but I guess before putting a point across, please please research on the facts. There have been many instances in sports history where joint winners are declared under extraordinary circumstances. This was the best and the most fair way to give justice to both sides. The Russian Captain had also agreed so whatever Nepo says it won't matter. Levon Aronian could have set an example and continued to play with his team showing the class of Armenian players, instead they walked out. There can be two sides of the coin, always.
Don't get butthurt because a nation of 1.3 billion will definitely rise in the ranks of world chess. The coolest person today was Kramnik and even FIDE could not challenge his epic prophecy (not a prediction :P)
Keep promoting Chess, India will grow, Indian players will grow in the space of chess. The country where the game of chess originated will now not eb left behind.

The games lost on time.. one was definitely winning for india, FIDE official admitted this in live stream on Chessbase india and the other game was a drawish position..
and the fault was not of internet disconnection on the player's end.. this lead to the decision..
At the time he explained this Anish Giri too was on the same stream..
I think in case of internet disconnectivity, india would have lost definitely.. earlier this kind of decision was taken in India Vrs Armenia where it was not proven beyond doubt that there was no internet disconnection, Armenia's appeal was rejected, However this was server issue..
And Strangely Vladimir Kramnik PREDICTED THIS RESULT on the same stream at the beginning.!!!! (Obviously he was joking but who would have thought of this?)

for those who would be watching this video much later: India was completely winning in women's junior board and it was a draw in men's junior board so overall it would be a draw. Indian players disconnected not because of internet issues but due to global internet outage (may be server crashed). So normally Armageddon would be on board which is totally unpredictable.

Sharing gold in the finals is new in chess but Indians are not new to witness such rare occasions , thanks to the champions trophy of cricket.
The final of the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy was rained-out twice, on 29 and 30 September 2002 at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. The final was scheduled to play between Sri Lanka cricket team and the India cricket team on 29 September 2002. In the end both teams were declared champions of champions trophy. 😎

Yesterday there was a major outbreak in cloudflare servers run by google. Almost every thing uses these servers. So yesterday there was a huge disturbance in the internet everywhere, specially the services which uses sockets (to make a long term connection). Not just chess, but DOTA matches were also affected (Omega league).

However, sad to to say this time that you brought a video and commented in a hurry without obtaining sufficient knowledge about the situation. As many commented here, Indian players were not disconnected, rather they were a part of global internet outage which not only affected the chess but lot of other areas.

Agad barely spoke about it in the video (may be in few seconds). The focus of his speech was the disconnect issue and the point is- he never mentioned the real reason behind it. Rather, he sounded like declaring India as a co-winner was unfair (though he didn't specifically mentioned it but that's how the interpretation comes out specially for a lay-man not aware of the issue at all). If you read other comments you will see almost everyone tried to educate him on the real reason he failed to mention. As AG said, the situation is like, suppose you were playing over the board in a hall, it was your turn to move but suddenly a huge earthquake hit the town and you had to clear the hall immediately without making any move. When you came back you saw the time was over. Would you accept the lose? Well, I think it's better to say the match was abandoned because of infrastructure failure. You can claim to resume the match from that particular position but in online chess, it is not possible because in the meantime the players could have analysed the game on engine. So rematch on all the 3 boards would be fair (but in that case some people would say, India is given a second chunce!). Remember, India didn't appeal to be the winner, it was Fide's decision.

The thing is there was a global outage which caused the nihal and divya to lose on time. The main point is nihal's game was drawn and divya was on the verge of mating her opponent. Like plus 5 with mate ensuing. So if not for global outage which crashed chess.com's server it would have ended 3-3 . So they awarded the gold to both. Pointing out it was not a problem on behalf of India's internet connection. Then russia would have won according to rules. But another point is similar thing happened to armenia in qf against India and their appeal was rejected. Thus the levon tweet. That's the whole summary of the decision.
P.S. I think the viewership on samay channel definitely influenced the decision as they were at a risk of upsetting 68k live chess enthusiasts

    *Day 2 of Olympiad *
    Ind vs mangolia
    India lost 2 points
because of Internet disconnection ( to be more specific both games were clearly winning )
No one appealed for any thing
And players had arranged proper internet connections by themselves
Even humpy skipped one round after that just because she might again lose because of internet . India won all the matches after that beating China, India tops the group and qualify to quarter finals
*Ind vs Armenia quarter finals *
Armenia lost connection the appealed for it their appeal was rejected and they WITHDREW from tournament they didn't even try to equalize by playing second round and it was totally their choice to walk away.
    India vs Russia finals
First round all six games were drawn
In the second round 3 games were drawn
    - Divya was clearly winning she has 30 sec or so
-nihal was worse but he manages to equalize position he has 20 sec
-Humpy was not winning but she got 2 mins
    And BAMmmmm
    -Divya lost on time
    -Nihal lost on time
-Humpy left with 18 sec only
There was a problem with server of cloudflare which is global issue for almost most of the online gaming industries even EAsports has stopped because of that u can even check log online it was confirmed by FIDE that it's not internet disconnection of players it was global server issue then they review games and conclude this decision because either way it was going to be draw match
So I think India was the first country to have disadvantage of Internet disconnection issue at day 2 of Olympiad yet we managed to win this tournament and remember players have work hard day and night and infact there was not a single match in final that Russia has won fair and square. Each and every game was drawn
    Deserving winner India

  • @Bluewhalebig

I understand that internet connections vary significantly depending on location, but is there no way for a country to ensure their top level players have a backup connection via satellite or something? With larger fan bases like India and Russia, you would think someone in their chess community could provide a satellite receiver. As long as your laptop is fully charged, and/or you have a battery backup, you could lose power and/or have a major server crash and still have internet connection without interruption.
Alternatively, why not just pause the timer until they reconnect? Both players would have the same amount of extra time to evaluate the position while disconnected, so it's fair. Is the issue that players could cheat while their live feed is disconnected? If that's the case, why not have them record the feed from their cameras, with a clock in view, and have them submit the recording immediately after the match to prove they didn't cheat while their internet was down? Cameras don't need internet to function and editing the videos without it being obvious would be very difficult.

Agadmator, you have misintepreted the result a bit. Divya deshmukh was completely winning and Nihal had a complete draw in the match. So in the second round as well the score would have tied. But due to disconnections from the Cloudflare server, according to a tweet from Chess.com, many members lost connections at once. Nihal and Divya were completely fine in the Zoom meeting so it is definitely not their internet issue, it was the Chess.com server issue. As a result, at the end, the final results were a bit confusing so the President decided to act accordingly.
