They are really playing with the Moonsun shippers in both of these and I love it. One inspiration for Chico Malo is a traditional story of a nine tailed fox spirit, that appears as a seductive woman and draws energy from her lover. So the king marries the fox spirit and then finds out what she is and leaves her, but meanwhile the fox has actually fallen in love with the king and is heart broken. The shade of blue of Moonbyuls hanbok is the royal color and blue is traditional the groom's color. Red on other had is the bride's color. The fans can be seen as the tails of the fox spirit.
If you think those are overt, wait'll you see the lyrics for LLL. The cover story is that it's a love song for the fans, and if you believe that, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.
Mamamoo+ Act1 Scene1 Chico Malo = Bad Boy .... GGBB = Good Girl Bad Boy. And BOTH M/V's have a "theatrical" Theme. "LLL" doesn't have any real connection to the above... Not even a "real" M/V. Appears to just be a Bonus, which I'm NOT complaining about. GGBB has a retro "Grease" sound and look, and Chico Malo having a Korean traditional/Modern mix.
Loved seeing how high you got from GGBB. I'm a total curmudgeon and hate cheesy musical theatre so Chico Malo was my favorite of the two. But being a former theatre nerd I thought it was cool that they used a stage theme for both MVs of Act 1 Scene 1 almost like it was a mini-mini concept album. The zither in Chico Malo is called a gayageum. An aniri is a narrative section of a pansori, the traditional Korean song song story. There were a bunch of references to folklore, legends and old songs including Arirang (having sore feet by the time you go ten miles after leaving me) and the 3 Great Thieves, who were Robin Hood style folk heroes (Hong Gildong being the most famous). The song & MV each have a pretty equal mix of traditional and contemporary elements from top to bottom - lyrics, instrumentation, dance and costume, set and prop design and even the acting, which includes the pansori intro, Solar's old school melodramatic stylized gestures (esp at the beginning) and modern method acting (the mirror scene), and Moonbyul slipping some hip hop into her mostly naturalistic style. I loved how they used a single flexible set as you might do on stage with different groups of furniture to suggest different rooms and eras and things like the frame to represent a mirror, the ladders to represent flowering cherry trees, the lighting design where the moon changes colors, and the color palette of red, blue, white and black to represent the Korean flag. Imo the point of combining traditional & modern was to imply that their story of an abandoned woman is a timeless tale, tho the yearning of the Joseon era woman is contrasted with the hit the road Jack attitude of the contemporary woman, and also to draw a connective link between two uniquely Korean forms of multi-disciplinary performing arts, pansori and kpop. I think the song and MV are conceptually brilliant and that both were brilliantly executed by everyone involved. GGBB is growing on me and is threatening to become an earworm against my wishes and since it's Mamamoo I'll probably give in soon. Imo the hip hop dance break is meant to show how the bad boy turns them on and unleashes the wild wimmin lurking inside the good girls. It's totally like Mamamoo not to let the song be a total cutesy Hallmark greeting card and include the sense that desire is visceral, exciting and a bit risky, dangerous and out of control. Check out the live performances of GGBB on the tv music shows. I'm not going to spoil it - watch both. There's also a terrific dance practice video that for once doesn't devolve into chaos and several hilarious and cute af tic tok dance challenge vids. 😂🤣
And they've already dropped a relay dance. Someone pointed out that MMM is the only group with all members having solo relays and now a sub-unit relay dance. And, of course, the most viewed relay dance.
@@robertthomas2312 Thanks. I often obsess about MMM MVs, esp the things I find out of place, confusing or unclear, so as I pass on info to different reactors my ideas and theories tend to evolve. I find it helpful to get different perspectives on the MV, esp from smart people like Kaye. I've been pondering what might be behind double casting Moonbyul as the bad guy and the abandoned woman and Solar as a Joseon woman and a contemporary woman and about who's arguing with whom in the mirror scene. Currently I think they're taking turns yelling into the mirror at the bad guy who's not there so they're both the modern woman when mirrored and as the scene ends they turn away from each other and split into Solar yearning (Joseon) and Moonbyul concluding he's already forgotten her (modern). You usually only see this kind of stuff in avant garde theatre but Byul and Solar pull it off seamlessly.
@@moo5289 How did I forget to mention it? I never would have thought to pay attention to something like who is the first group to have all members with solo and subunit relay dances but of course it would be MMM. They're having a ball with this comeback. 😂
Omg thank you so so much for your detailed breakdown of all the background and pieces I was missing! I love it! You're amazing! I have already been watching every single performance I can find of both songs! I can't get enough!!! I think GGBB will grow on you! It's just so fun and you know there's no way it's as simple as good girls like bad boys, because it never is with Mamamoo 😁
Moonbyul has been portraying the Bad Boy in both those scenarios and Solar is the Good Girl so considering the lyrics…..well do with that info what you will 🤣
neither moonbyul or solar had writing credits on ggbb but they participated heavily in chico malo. both of them have expressed that chico malo is their favorite song on the album 😅
Loving this comeback from them, can't wait to see the behind the scenes with these two. If you like theatrical / operettic music I would suggest LA POEM (4 member male vocal group). Unfortunately translations for them are hard to come by. A couple MVs that have subtitles are Waltz in Storm (2021), and there newest comeback The Fire (2023). But honestly I find their voices so amazing I don't need to know about what they are singing.
Thanks for this reaction!!! I absolutely *loved* both songs, although the dance break in GGBB felt too random/not incorporated into the rest of the song to me. So solely for that reason, I think I prefer Chico Malo overall (and Moonbyul is SO COOL in it)! But as someone who grew up listening to a lot of oldies music, I have a real fondness for the sweet/kinda corny vibes of GGBB. Since the title of the album is Act 1, Scene 1, the "theatre" aspect in both songs was very much intended. In Chico Malo, I felt like while they were singing their parts, both Solar and Moonbyul were playing the role of the person hurt by the chico malo, but that when Moonbyul *wasn't* singing her lines she often took on the role of the chico malo. And then for GGBB, to be honest, the lyrics I felt only tangentially matched what was being shown in the MV. But I didn't mind! The MV is AMAZING.
for me i did love both songs as well, but i do think my kind of music is more GGBB (since i became a moo bc of their early stuff). i will definitely have to agree that GGBB's dance break could've been intertwined into the song or removed from the track altogether. i thought it was cool from watching the MV, bc i know it will make more sense when they have a live arrangement of the song. so i thought it'll be like ILLELLA where the dance break was only on the mv and not the official track. i was surprised that the dance break is actually part of the song.
I did not think it was possible to be that super cute especially at 32 years old, can someone ask them to tone it down and age like the rest of us? GGBB has become one of my favorites as well. And I have seen the dance challenge videos one of which has Wheein doing the GGBB dance challenge with Moonbyul and Solar. Chico Malo is also on the play list and amusing Solar and Moonbyul did their own youtube reaction video of Chico Malo, it is on solarsido and amusing. There is a third song on the album, LLL, which is Love, Loving and will Love. They go togther. GGBB is falling in love with the bad boy, Chico Malo is the divorce because bad boys dont really make good husbands and LLL is the end of Act 1 Scene 1(the album name) and could be they are together again or just remembering, hard to say really but it is a beautiful ballad with beautiful lyrics. Moonbyul has said LLL will have an MV but has not said when.
lol you're very valid with your Moonsun shipping. They are literally attached at the hip outside of work.
They're very cute.
I never expected to ship them, but they certainly make it difficult not to 😅

I actually have heard of that story!!! I had no idea it could be related but now that you mention it I totally see it! 🤗

Chico Malo is absolutely fire and I see why they would be most proud of it, but that music video for GGBB just hit me and made me so dang happy 😅
I love that you catch the little details. I didn’t even notice the You’re The Best move like you did lol
