  • Derry~Londonderry is the second city of Northern Ireland after Belfast. On the island of Ireland it is the fourth largest city (after Dublin, Belfast and Cork). The city's name comes with two versions with as unionists preferring the longer name, and nationalists the shorter "Derry" which is more common these days.
Derry/Londonderry is located on the River Foyle. The ancient defensive walls are the most complete in Ireland so we start our tour at the Bishop's Gate - South of the city center.
First we check out the city walls and walk downhill towards the center with the St Columb's Cathedral on the way. We pass through the Millenium Forum and see the Derry Girls mural, which is an attraction of the city.
We see the different parts of the city with the West Bank, walk a bit more on top of the city walls and generally head down towards the river. It's a windy day in autumn when we reach the Guildhall (town hall).
Finally we cross the River Foyle via the Peace Bridge. On the other side we have a good view over Derry/Londonderry as we end our walking tour.

I studied abroad in Northern Ireland in my senior year, and getting to walk along the walls of Derry was one of the most memorable experiences I had there. Yeah there are still days where I wake up and miss the fresh air, and the sound of the River Bann flowing at the base of the hill.

Thanks to your videos from different parts of Europe, I also realized that although we live in a common Europe, each country has its own architecture. Others are cities in Britain, Spain, Germany and again others in Eastern Europe and other Balkans and Scandinavian countries.

Very quiet even for that time of day, especially on a Saturday. You also missed the Bogside Murals, Free Derry Corner and the Bloody Sunday memorial which you can see at a distance from 20:32. The end of your video would also have taken you to Ebrington Square, which is a former army barracks used since 1841 right up until 2003.

When I was in Northern Ireland I didn't manage to get to the Giant's Causeway. There are a handful of other places that I'd like to visit sometime. I also have good memories of Doolin or the Aran Islands in the Republic of Irelandwhich I didn't get to revisit on that trip. Maybe in a few years it will work out again as the Ring of Kerry is also on the list still... Thanks for watching!

    • @poptravelorg

Back when I was there the border was open without checks. Currently there is free flow of goods and people as the border from the EU (Republic of Ireland) to the UK has moved to the sea. There are movements from the British government to change the agreement with the EU so we'll see what develops over time
