Skyhooks was the first band I ever saw in concert in 1974 as best as I can recall. As a 16 year old me and many of my high school classmates travelled in a bus from southern N.S.W to Bendigo VIC to see them play. There were no parents and no over ruling supervision for us free spirits back then and It was awesome. Kids probably wouldn't be allowed to do that these days without a multitude of minders but those were the good old days.
@@SteamRailPatreonR761VR I do know Bendigo quite well now and was there a week ago at my parents home in Spring Gully. I’m racking my brain to remember that venue. It was in town (CBD) as best as I recall and it wouldn’t have been licenced, or if it was there was no alcohol. We were a bus load of high school teenagers who travelled from Deni and weren’t the only ones. I don’t recall too many adults if any. Sorry, I didn’t know Bendigo then like I do now, it wasn’t a pub but it did have a raised stage. Perhaps a public hall/theatre but I don’t recall it being a massive room/space, big enough though to accommodate several hundred standing people. Just for kicks and giggles, I saw AC/DC in 1973 just after they formed. They played in a metal clad pavilion at Memorial Park Deniliquin with the barn doors open. Angus played upside down at times hanging from a rafter and the sound was rubbish. Didn’t their fate change.
I remember seeing an interview with Greg about how He came to write this song. He was teaching a class about songwriting, was discussing creating of lyrics, and then boom - went and wrote it that night - then got the band back together... History was born.
This song and the video said everything about who they were and what they stood for - making music that was fun and accessible. They were a unique blend of fine musicianship and social commentary who never took themselves too seriously. They single handedly changed Austraian music forever. Thankyou Skyhooks - job done!
I remember when I was a kid discovering my dad's cassette single of this, absolutely loved it. Brings back so many good memories. That guitar riff at the start is just iconic.
A young blonde woman once asked me if I was Russian. I said; 'Nyet, I not in hurries to go anywhere far king. (Improv. accent, stereotypical movie accent).
Went to their "Jukebox in Siberia" concert, at the Old Lion Hotel in Adelaide they were awesome them as in the seventies, when I first set eyes on them :)
My dear old Dad was a child of the Australian 1970s and he just absolutely loved the Skyhooks. When I asked hi what he’s favourite Skyhooks song was - without any hesitation he answered that it was “Jukebox in Siberia.”
I remember growing up with this song, my grandma would play it on the radio while I was sitting in the back of roadtrips, amazing song, one of my favorites even to this day, ever time I listen to it, makes me that much happier remembering those times
I really remember this vividly as my first favourite song. Amusing to think that it was made by an iconic 70's band. That clip, though somewhat dated, I remember seeing as 'wow this is how things are made'.
Hehe... I think its 'somewhat dated' as it was shot in the 4:3 aspect ratio (TV of the time) and not what you'd expect now which is 16:9. As the clip maker, I thought we managed to capture the 'character' of the band & its members. And I'm happy that that stands up to time - as there is a 'laugh and a giggle' and a tongue-in-cheek vibe to what we intended.
Iron Maiden only covered Women In Uniform because their label forced them to… They quite rightly objected because it’s nothing like their usual sound… Maiden have never played the song again to this day after recording another single of their own to follow it.
@Coldacre - mate what a ridiculous comment - this was the only Australian single to reach number 1 in 1990. It stayed there for 2 weeks. Their Summer Tour was sold out across Australia night in night out for 4 months. The Australian public had a great affection for this band and it was highlighted with this track and subsequent album sales. Commercial radio at the time snubbed the song because they had so many other cool timeless classics to play like Rick Astley Cathy Dennis Bros Ratcat etc
This is the greatest song ever by skyhooks i used to played that song ever time now and then when I was a little kid when my parents or dad when we go to the pub and i always always played it on the lazer disc jukebox and I always used to dance to that song
Fuckin rip off cunts. My brother wrote a song for them to do their reunion release single and they said they would use it the management said NO, so they wrote this crap and tall timber to steal his originals, then didn't pay him cent
@@carolepworth99 he co wrote back on the track with fred strauks, their drummer who is also a high school music teacher, and the other song was about trees being cut down to make way for houses etc, they released tall tall timber which "borrowed" his idea. Thanks

Legendary Aussie band, I remember this band when the song "Horror Movie"came out in "76/77 (memories of high school) Known affectionately as "Shirl" or Shirley" (Real name Graham Strachan) because he had curly hair, obviously reference to child actress Shirley Temple. (famous child actor from mid to late 1930s) Lead singer, what a career, from Carpenter to rock star, even had his own "kids" show called "Shirl's Neighborhood" in the late '70s early 80s". Sadly taken in a helicopter accident in the 2000s. Gone but never forgotten. RIP Shirl.
Did the CIA write this song too, just like they wrote “Wind Of Change”? “I love the West, I love their beer I’m so glad glasnost is here.” Ask yourself, who else could’ve? “Jukebox In Siberia” gets two out of ten… I think they’ve used up every cliched Russian reference there is… oh wait a minute… two out of ten bowls of borscht.
