In The Mountain's Shadow | A Story About Betty's Bay
In The Mountain's Shadow is a nostalgic look at the small town of Betty's Bay and its surroundings, situated between the coast and Overberg Mountains in the Western Cape Province of South Africa where I've spent summer holidays exploring this coast and the mountains surrounding it. Now 30 years later, I look back at how this area has changed and how it influenced and inspired my work as a photographer and filmmaker.

Had I not been one of the fortunate to have spent my youth in the magnificence of the Cape of Good Hope and a father whose greatest delight it was, to road trip his family N, S, E and West across the vast, individual landscapes of South Africa, Betty's Bay, would have lay undiscovered. I marvel to this day 50 years later from my 'other' home of Scotland, that other than many more houses being built, BB, still retains it's wild and majestic, protected natural beauty, so poetically described and beautifully filmed below the Overberg and under the stars of the Milky Way. Thank you X sharing far and wide.

Me too! Unfortunately my workstation struggles to work with fully graded, denoised raw footage from Blackmagic's Pocket Cinema 4K, but I'm working on fixing that. Hopefully, I'll be able to do 4K for the next film. Thanks so much for watching. Really appreciate the feedback!

Hi Fred, I read the piece on Fstoppers. I have read the comments on your TH-cam channel. I am taking it for granted that since you have posted this for public viewing that you would like to know what my take is on this piece. My qualifications:- I am in the business, I know what the Blackmagic cameras can achieve(as some of your shots do show), I grew up in the Cape, I visited Bety's Bay briefly when I was hired to video some influential person's girlfriend in a restaurant at night. I was given the keys to a cottage to stay the night but decided to drive back to Cape Town after the shoot because I discovered that the whole interior of the cottage was covered in sand, including the beds. The drive home along the coast in the moonlight was magnificent. I understand from the Fstopper article that this was a personal piece for you and therein is my first critique. I felt that it was so personal that I could not identify with the beauty of the shots. I felt that I was intruding on your experience. Like the discomfort one feels when seeing a couple kissing in public. I felt that in some of the shots you allowed the blacks to float and they looked washed out, not rich like we know these cameras are capable of and in fact like some of your other magnificent footage. I hope that you take this critique as a positive thing. I admire anyone that creates and puts themselves out there. Been there, done that in a previous life. I know the pain.
