I watched this video and was curious why she's so passionate about veganism so i watched the first documentary she mentioned 'Earthlings'. Straight after i became vegan as I was completely unaware of the truth about the meat and dairy industry.
People who hate on this are just uneducated and if everyone took the time to acknowledge what they're eating/drinking on a daily basis they would too be vegan. The animal suffering is vile and must be stopped so thank you Alissa for educating me and changing my lifestyle. Vegan since 9th September :)

@YoStefan No, and I really don't care since this band desperately tries to appea to people who are 50 years or older. I'm not a 50 year old man who wants to listen to Death Metal but but says that it is too heavy for him when he listens to real death metal, therefore I do not feel the need to further spend time informing myself about them. But a comment like this is totally okay, this is something else entirely and spending time on writing this definitely doesn't clash with what I said about it earlier.

I'd say the hardest problems against veganism actually happen in less developed countries, such as Brazil. 'Choosing' amon milk isn't an option because it tends to cost twice as much compared to cow's milk. And we have to deal with money shortages and that kind of stuff so, yes, I do want a vegan lifestyle, but it's really hard on places where being vegan is still an elitist option :(
But go on with this, girl, you're amazing for what you do and who you are. Being vegan is just another amazing thing you do ❤️

As a vegan in a wealthy country, I think the important thing is reducing suffering as much as you are able to. If vegan food is too expensive and you're very limited on money, it's understandable you are going for the cheaper animal products. While buying cow milk, you should still be able to buy lentils, chikpeas or beans instead of cow meat. Also, you might be buying cow milk for the calcium, but don't forget that collards, bok choy, mustard greens, turnip greens and brocoli are also good sources of calcium (I don't which of those are cheap enough in your country).

The Metal Worm -I'm just sick of vegans being self righteous and telling us meat eaters that we should eat boring old salad and other things we aren't that into. We got this far as humanity by being hunters, not by eating like wussy little Rabbits, and I don't want to go vegan, what does having no balls have to do with not wanting to succumb to crap meals ... I like what I like and intolerant fascists need to step back! lol And what we have done to our planet has to do with several other things before we even get into eating meat, so many other things like building bigger bombs, allowing communism to take over western nations, this new generation having no patience due to everything being at an instant for them, and they freak out when a download takes more than five seconds., not giving a damn about the past, who the hell hasn't seen the Goonies, millennials that's who, we are all doomed, those that don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. Lol Eating meat is not hurting our world, that came from a Liberal view point and I am far too intelligent for that crap.

What a woman, it took me years to become fully vegan, its been 8 years now and i still crave meat sometimes but like Alissa said its an ethical stance, i don't preach about it and don't place anyone to my standards or judge anyone for eating meat but if anyone asks me why i am vegan then i will sure fucking tell them, its because i don't want to cause suffering to innocent animals, anyone who denies that the meat and diary industries are not absolute hell for the poor animals need to do some research, its a cruel, unforgiving world and it is not at all concerned with animal welfare.

If you mean the morons who shout out "WE EVOLVED TO EAT MEAT!", then yes. They are morons. But like in almost every conversation there is a scale from one end to the other where the polar opposites commit to a shouting match and drown out everyone with a legitimate criticism or balanced opinion.
First off: Yes, it's generally (but not in every single case) better for the environment to eat vegan food. Not only that, it will be necessary to eat vegan food in the future because todays consumption isn't sustainable. And yes, you lower the ammount of suffering in the world if you choose to eat vegan. People should eat vegan food more often than they do.
Second: No, you don't need to commit to veganism as if it was a religious diet or a basis of your identity. The moment you reject a meal cooked for you by a friend of college because it has some milk in it is the moment you've made your diet a statement about YOU. Being a vegan should never be an excuse to be rude to others, but it should be a positive attitude and a general strife to do better. Thinking about veganism as only being "true" if 100% of animals products are left out 100% of the time makes it an absolutist stance, which also makes it less appealing to people who would otherwise concider eating vegan food some higher percentage of the time than they currently do.
Thirdly, there is such a thing as food culture which has been enriched over thousands of years by the addition of meat and animal products. This is not to say that we need to eat animal products every day to commit to food culture, but simply that we should recognize that a lot of our common heritage is actually based on the consumption of meat and dairy. I think giving up meat and animal products 100% of the time can actually empoverish our food culture and rob us of some amazing dishes passed down through the centuries. It's also the most common reason for why people who try veganism stop being vegan, which is why it should be a concern to vegans who really want to spread the habit of eating less animal products.
Lastly, some people who commit fully to veganism encounter health issues and that can be a problem. In those cases we need to figure out what people can eat to feel good and do as little damage as possible in the process.
I think that's the best and most balanced case I can make currently.

I was more or less reffering referring to the meat substitute stuff. After all, if you don't eat meat, you have to get your protein somehow. So what do vegans eat for a substitute? I don't handle beans too well. I got a sensitive stomach and they give me really painful gas. And the fake meat stuff like veggie burgers are kinda like eating cardboard in my opinion, fake cheese is cruel joke. anyway, that is more or less what I was reffering
      to.

Tom Caine I actually think there is truth to both statements. You get the REALLY passionate/militant vegans, and then also the really insecure, defensive meat eaters.
I have seen bizarre behaviour on both sides.
Sometimes I will go out to dinner with new people and I will order the veggie burger on the menu and there is always one person who takes personal offense to this. "You think you are better than us? ". I never end said I was anything yet. And the. the next 10 minutes at the table are that person defending their own inner demons or something while I do my best to ignore them and politely change the subject.
It is more of a person thing from my experience.

I live in a household where my sister is a lifelong vegan, my mum a vegetarian and I'm a meat eater. I tried vegetarianism for 6 weeks for my sister, but it was just too difficult for me personally. I didn't like the taste of any of the meat alternatives and ended up eating nothing but steamed vegetables for the entire 6 weeks. By the end of it I was counting down the minutes until I could eat again. Now I am "meat reducing" (if that's even a thing), and only eat meat once a week. Surely it's better than nothing? I do have to call out one thing from the video though. She says that veganism "doesn't cost anything", but that is absolutely false. Vegan foods are much, much more expensive - I guess because they aren't widely adopted at this time.

See, this is a sensible take, I would say. I'm definitely not vegan (my brain does not work like that) but I've tried vegan diets and was never able to stay on them more than a few months. I just wound up eating beans, rice, and nuts (was not good). I would go out to vegan places, but there aren't many around, especially by where I work. To buy vegan food at a store (Whole Foods...) and cook it is much more expensive and time consuming, and I've never been able to cook tempeh or seitan and make them not taste really nasty. Being a working American who has always punched in and out for work makes it hard, but I could see someone living with their parents, working under the table, and being vegan easier. She's trying to advocate for vegan diets, but people in the know do know that it's a very difficult lifestyle change. Also, you can forget about eating foods that coworkers bring in for the team. If eating is at all a social thing for you, you better find vegans who are free and bearable to be around... Good luck. I've tried it, it's not for me.

It's not about going beyond what is possible for you. Also, focus on new foods. Fruit, greens, vegetables, etc. All foods. When you're eating everything, you will even forget about meat.

I was vegetarian for almost a year. it's tough because you can't just eliminate meat from your diet, you need to re-think how you approach food and nutrition as a whole. long story short, you really need to cook your own food. this is especially true if you are vegan. in fact, if you are vegan, there is no way around it, you have to become your own chef. I gave up my vegetarianism because I was just consuming WAY too many carbohydrates. You go out to eat with friends, and you eat the chips and salsa, the bread, and the rice. before you know it, you just consumed enough carbs for an entire week within a 1 hour period. So, like I said, you need to re-think how approach food. it's a fantastic healthy way to live but you need to do your research and be open minded. I have no clue how she does it on the road, though I am sure Arch Enemy gets decent catering most of the time. If you are an indie band, most small cities, small towns, and rural towns WILL NOT have veg-friendly restaurants, and you're stuck eating truck stop food.

Though it would help if she would admit that cows don't need to suffer necessarily to give milk for the poeple to dring. Hens don't need to suffer to lay eggs that can be eaten. And unluckily, most vegans sufferfrom nutritional deficiencys if they don't make a science of their nutrition, because it's certainly not as easy as bying some apples and bananas in grocery stores.
The only reason why veganism can be considered more healthy than what the general public is used to eat because people only care about the cost, not about the quality, so the stuff we fill our stomachs with is generally really horrible stuff. And from that horrible stuff, we eat way too much. That's also where the animal suffering come from. And I totally respect her reasons not to want to be part of that. But if you really care about your health, you'll never get more extreme than vegetarianism. And the good thing is, that you can do that and be still as ethical as any vegan on planet earth. (That can even be true while eating meat, by the way)

    • @willfullyinformed
      @willfullyinformed 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

I appreciate you trying to not come off as offensive, but I need to be honest with you here as I've eaten meat for 25 years of my life and I come to you from an unbiased perspective and understanding of both sides - What you said is all factually incorrect. I took the time to read yours so please take the time to read mine as I tried to organize it for your eyes.
#1. Cows do suffer tremendously to give milk, please look up "Erin Janus - DAIRY IS SCARY! The industry explained in 5 minutes" and "Erin Janus - Whats wrong with eggs". Cows have to be forcefully impregnated (raped) and have their calves taken away so that they do not drink "OUR" milk, the calves are then sold to the veal industry or disposed of in a killing ditch. You cannot share milk with calves if you're to harvest any milk whatsoever; best case scenario is that you're stealing milk away from the mother's calf on a private farm, which is still exploitation - but we are talking about the dairy industry which is even more horrific, not only to the animals but to our health and the destruction of this planet - every 3 seconds an acre of the amazon rain forest is destroyed for dairy and meat farms for one example.
#2. "Most" vegans do not suffer from nutritional deficiency, a "deficient vegan" has nothing to do with the diet, you can still be fat and out of shape as a vegan if you eat processed foods like most people - this is a pure anecdotal and inaccurate stereo-type spread by carnist logic (please watch Jon Venus most recent video on why Vegans looks weak/deficient (he's vegan and jacked), and Vegan Gains video on Animal Protein). I have over 850 studies from the most well known organizations saying otherwise through study about vegans health (I'll reply again and link a few of them just in case links are blocked). I myself have been vegan for almost 4 years and I'm a body builder/Calisthenics enthusiast still gaining size/strength, hitting PR's and healthier than ever. Vegans make up for around 2-5% of the total population and increasing - however, in the U.S we currently have the worst health problems ranging from extreme deficiencies, #1 killer atherosclerosis (we are the only species to get this disease because we are not carnivores or omnivores) and cancer.
#3. Veganism is the absolute healthiest diet/lifestyle on Earth. We are herbivores by design, please watch - "Gary Yourofsky - The Most Important Speech You Will Ever Hear". Please do your research, you're being lied to and you're receiving misinformation through traditional and bias sources.
#4. Veganism is not extreme, the irony in this all too common stereo-type statement is incomprehensible and a travesty to humankind. We are okay with killing and enslaving over 500,000,000,000 BILLION animals on this planet every year for taste - NOT FOR HEALTH - NOT FOR NECESSITY, then die or spend billions on medical bills from it, but eating plants is "too extreme".
#5. Vegans don't claim to be better than anyone, what we are saying is that the ethical minimum or ethical standard is veganism. There is no such thing as ethical murder for taste or pleasure, there is no such thing as killing kindly or painlessly. Animals are sentient, do feel pain on the same level as humans (science argues it's potentially more pain), they feel emotions such as pleasure, sadness, and pain from detachment of their children and environments.
      6. There are absolutely NO excuses for destroying this planet's ecosystems, destroying and polluting our clean land/air/water on a world-wide scale, destroying our health to support billion dollar industries telling us propaganda lies about what's healthy through advertisements, and literally causing world-wide hunger because we feed our food to the animals that we are going to eat - absolute insanity (fact: it's estimated that we can feed over 16 billion people with the food we feed the animals).
      - Side note, just to give you an idea of the scale of which these industries are in bed with our government (Corporatocracy) - Open knowledge - The food pyramid is funded by the egg and dairy industry, the government subsidizes all meat so we never actually see the real cost, it only appears as "cheap" when in fact we are paying billion$ in taxes to reduce the costs of meat, and most meat/dairy/egg studies are flawed by design, they don't calculate cholesterol at base levels and they use incorrect comparisons - follow the money and you'll find it's all funded by meat/dairy/egg industries. I will reply with some links for your referencing. Cheers

If you want to raise "ethical" livestock on "human" conditions to live in, like open range, and production methods involving no suffering, the entire surface of the earth wouldn't be enough to feed half of us.
      Just sayin...

There seems to be a bit of misunderstanding of what I said before, so just to address this in short: I'm in no way saying that the largest part of the industry doesn't treat animals in an unethic way (I'd say they treat plants AND humans in unethic ways as well, but that as an aside). What I was saying is that this has not to be the case. Where I live (Germany) we have so-called Bio-farms where vegetables are grown and livestock is raised without all the cruelties involved in the Big industries and I can go there and convince myself through my own eyes that the animals there are not suffering. It's obviously costlier to buy there and I admit that to be done on a grand scale people have to change their ways of life, but it can be done.
#2 what I meant with nutritional deficiencies is the lack of certain vitamins and micronutrients often found with vegans and sorry to say, that is a statistical fact and reason why a lot of vegans have to make use off dietary supplements, a point I'll come back to in
#3 , because the need to use those supplements can be easily avoided by eating products that contain enough of those micronutrients (which means animal products more often than not). I'm also not saying that living vegan means living unhealthy (especially compared to the average U.S. citizen), but it's with 100% scientifically proven certainty not the most healthiest way of life. And second, we were not made by design, but by evolution, and evolution made us (again, scientifically proven) as omnivores. and sorry to say, but Gary Yurofsky is not a scientist but an activist, so his opinions are obviously not credible beyond doubt.
#4 I apologize if you felt offended by the use of the verb "extreme" and I certainly didn't mean to say that eating plants is to be considered as such (I do that every day and I don't think that I'm an extremist for sure).
#5 regarding your claim, that there is no thing as killing kindly or painlessly: Well I'm working as a nurse, and part of my job includes palliative care, so while I won't try to argue the first part of your sentence, as far as dying painlessly is concerned, I know better for a fact.
#6 Well yeah, I know all that, and I agree wholeheartedly. Only that veganism isn't the only way to put a stop to this.

Literally by the studies I've linked earlier and over 900 studies by the World Health Organization, National Cancer Institute, Dr. Esselstyn, and the American College of Cardiology (including both past and current vegan Presidents of the ACC) completely disagree with you on what's actually healthy, the vegan diet, and what causes deficiency and disease (I talk more on this in #2) though I'm sure you'll still say "but that's not what science says". I've offered you the key to the door, take it or leave it at this point.
#1- It is entirely unsustainable (as mentioned by Metal Worm above) and you can't kill a sentient being ethically *pain or not* period (obvious context is animals as they can't voice an opinion). In the near future there will be no such thing as "ethical killing farms" as it is contradictory in logic in the first place, it is by its very nature illogical. All of this is not only costlier as you mentioned in terms of a physical business location, but it is an enormous cost to health care, inevitable land pollution, and every individual paying taxes; yet it all can be avoided by not eating for taste/selfish pleasure. Again veganism is the ethical standard, a baseline of ethics and moving forward into sustainability. Will there a be a future where we just grow meat with cells? Sure, but none of what you mentioned is the future or an ethical direction. A sentient being doesn't want to die and you take its life *unnecessarily* (exception of survival circumstances) = unethical, no red-herrings about it.
#2 - Every single micro-nutrient, vitamin, and mineral is in a vegan diet in its most pure form without the atherosclerosis and all cause mortality that comes with animal products as referenced in every pub med study earlier, again that is the fault of the individual if they're deficient as most of the population on earth is in need of supplements and nutritional education. The world health organization, both presidents of American cardiology (vegan), Dr. Esselstyn, and the national cancer institute agree that the vegan diet is not only the most superior diet available to humans in all aspects of life (baby to adult), but it is the ONLY diet capable of completely eliminating coronary hear disease by study (Dr. Esselstyn's study); on top of that all of their studies which account for over 900 studies shows that all animal products increase all cause mortality, cancer, heart disease, and cause many others forms of disease such as Diabetes.
#3 - Animals get B12 and all of their vitamins/minerals from plants, and the animals that eat the plants and drink from streams. B12 for example is ONLY naturally found in soil and natural streams, however because we over wash and sanitize - we destroy most B12 bacteria therefore just like iodine in ALL salt, it must be supplemented in our food or other means. What most people don't realize is that the majority of animal products are supplemented with these specific vitamins. Literally, everyone is on supplements and there are good forms/bad forms of supplements. Again, your knowledge and science is outdated, our enzymes have not evolved to eat meat, we do not have a digestive-tract for meat, our teeth are of herbivores not carnivores, and we by study get atherosclerosis from eating animal products and we do not produce our own vitamin C like carnivores do - and we must get our Vitamin C from vegetables.
#4 - No worries I wasn't offended, I was only making a point that it is incredibly ignorant and that it is just another copy and paste response to excusing killing sentient beings, just more cognitive dissonance. Plants don't feel pain and they only chemically react to stimuli, but sentient animals undoubtedly do feel pain and there is absolutely no comparison to picking a fruit off of a tree or cutting a branch and slitting a cows throat. Please watch youtube channel "Ask Yourself" where he covers these logical fallacies in debate fashion.
#5 - This is a red-herring and irrelevant, obviously I'm talking in the context of ethics and sentience - killing an animal that is sentient and cannot voice its opinion on the same level as humans is unethical (sentience = pain, feeling, brain, nervous system), there is absolutely no evidence produced showing that they're not sentient and they have the exact same basics we do for sentience (brain, heart, etc.) and in fact science has proven their sentience, simple google search. Also, for the record I and most vegans do not put animals on the same level as human, we are simply stating they're sentient and therefore it is unethical to kill *needlessly* (survival as with all animals is an exception).
#6 - Veganism is one of the easiest and best ways to put a stop to many of our problems, not all the problems of the world. It's by far the most lazy, cheapest, and simplest form of change needed in order to make a massively positive impact on this planet PERIOD. All it takes is a vote with your wallet at the grocery store, a little research, and an understanding that you can eat the exact same textures and have the exact same tastes with plants. However, people are lazy and are attached to their current traditions and indoctrinations, they buy dead meat from a store and believe they're similar to lions, omnivores, or carnivores while getting their information from biased propagandized studies/media/industries - they also believe everything they are taught in school, unwilling to unlearn what they've been told all their lives and then relearn. Cheers

I am friends with vegans (I am not a vegan personally), and they are like this. They are very understanding that some people are not vegan. I have met other vegans that are essentially the stereotype of vegans; they told me that I was eating an innocent animal. I told them to shove it, because I will not change to fit their beliefs. I told them that millennia ago, our ancestors didn't have that choice. Obviously they do not represent vegans. I just wanted to put this out there.

Lol regardless of whether you eat meat or vegan food you are still killing something to live. You eat meat you kill an animal, you eat vegan and you kill a plant. Based on Science plants, vegatables, etc actually feel so regardless your food suffers before you consume it.

    • @search895
      @search895 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@selenawilliams3261 it is such a fallacious statement to say "science says plants do suffer". Press and media say so but science never made such a big statement. Plants interact with their environment. Suffering is an animal trait, you need some animal parts like a nervous system and a brain to be able to suffer. I think the biological reason is that animals usually cant afford to lose limbs or blood but plants more often can lose branches or leaves or some fluids and recover.
