this is so helpful and so validating, i am a dancer from China, in my culture showing vulnerability is forbidden in class, and i saw so many gifted dancer deal this issue alone, i am grateful that i able to speak english to get more sources to understand things in a healthy way, but it is hard to do this alone, thank you Kathryn for your help. send love from China.

As someone who deals with anxiety in everyday life this is really helpful to be able to make it work in ballet too!

This is perfect timing! I’ve been more stressed in ballet than usual lately. Thank you so much Kathryn and Kirsten!

As an adult dancer - this makes me feel a little better. I have anxiety walking into class when as I am walking, I am surrounded by parents and younger dancers that go to that school. So I sometimes feel like a giant walking thru 😅. But in class, I just try to focus on what I am doing and not think about if the people in there are looking at me or not. I consider it an accomplish every time I show up because showing up is hard sometimes, let alone actually doing ballet as an adult. 🙂

omg i feel that thing about how you cant just talk to an average therapist about ballet, its just so frustrating and makes it even worse! Thanks so much for this video!

I took one year of ballet when I was 9. I started up again when I was 37 and have been dancing ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop and belly dance (smattering of other styles) for 17 years since. We had a woman in our class who was in her 80s with a rod in her back! We’re each other’s support & check in with each other!

I'm trying to finish my music degree after years away and have to play in a masterclass next week-this was sooooo helpful!!! I'll be thinking about what I have to offer my peers and what I want to get out of the experience!

When I first became interested in ballet in 2017 and wanted to learn more, you and Kirsten’s channels were the first ones I came across. Such a pleasure seeing you both here together! Though I don’t dance, these videos help me as I navigate my work and other aspects of life. Thanks for all you do!

This was just the thing, really so helpful! I now understand why it's been difficult for me to be confident applying to a job, or applying myself to anything in life even when it's not related to dance, because as a dancer I made these "decisions" about my worth and abilities. Looks like it's time to challenge those decisions that have become beliefs! Thanks so much for making this video.

The thing she said about "not being able to say you're good at something because there's someone else who's better" is so real. I'm not a dancer, but I've been a baton twirler for the past 18 years and I'm pretty good at it, but when people ask me if I'm good I always say that I'm pretty okay, but that there are people who are better.
I've been working on not comparing my self to other people, but it's a struggle😅

I loved this! This also applies to classical music! I’ve had performance anxiety and it’s taken a long time to be able to manage my performance anxiety. Recording myself a lot during practice sessions has been the thing that has helped and it has improved my playing

Thank you so much for this video!
4 months ago I decided to start doing jazzdance again after not dancing for over 10 years.
I knew that I was so out of shape, I just wanted to move und become more fit and flexible again, so I already had that mindset of "I wanna do this for me and my health" and thankfully my teacher is all about having fun in class (even though she does push us). Hearing you talk about being proud of it gave me a new perspective.
I'm really struggling with cramps in my feet, so I'm always a bit nervous before class, but I can also see it that way: Even though I have cramps, even though I am so out of shape, even though I am tired after work - I go every time. And being proud of that really helps in terms of motivation :)

Same for me, I go to an adult ballet class after work and its challenging because my brain is mentally tired just from work - but I tell myself to just do my best in class and enjoy actually being present doing what I love. 99% of the time it helps regardless if I look good or not 🤣

Omg! This totally hit the spot. You know..I became a dancer at a really old age..I mean perspective wise and being a dancer is hard but I wouldn't change it for the world. Now when I go to my psychologist and say I couldn't accept that solo because.... to make an entire new choreography in 1 hour was not possible for me because I felt...he doesn't get it. He believes that to dance is like lifting weights..the same...you just warm up...watch a screen and magically it will all come to you. I am like...emmm you do know that this is a form of art..right? And that the emotional self has a great deal in all of this? He just had this guessing face.... Now I don't feel that alone..specially since I just changed studio ...I needed to listen to this...thank you sooo much

Dancer or not, this is brilliant. Some of it is new information, some of it we knew once but forgot. Does this come in a long lasting, slow release form? Please send me the extra large bottle and put me on the auto-refill list.

Fantastic video! Such good and wise advice! I was thinking about watching performances…how we feel when a dancer falls or begins to fade during a killer variation or even a “wardrobe malfunction.” I never hate those dancers! I love musical theater. Those pre-performance announcements, “Playing the part of blah-blah-blah….” make me have sympathetic anxiety! My heart goes out to them. Notice the applause…I suspect it’s sometimes louder when a performer has gone thru a noticeable challenge.

Yesterday I walked in and I saw new people ..the moment I walked in a girl just stood looking at me putting her hands in her hips all stiff ...im really tall and obviously because im a dancer i have long muscled legs... so lots of people hate me because I am tall although in ballet thats not the norm and shorter sizes are more popular..but anyway.. later that night I thought ...just dance with your heart..Katie said...whats your motivation to dance? So I danced with my heart...and all of the sudden it didnt matter if I screwed it up... actually I made fewer mistakes...and I didnt cared the others thought....thank you Katie you rock!

I would Love a Video on a New Teacher being rude and disrespectful to dancers that have danced for 12yrs and a new teacher that is not their teacher saying negative comments reguarding their dancing like their Superior to them.
