This was early Madonna. She always had something, a star quality. Her vocals would get significantly better and her artistry matured. This lyrics were taken right from Billie Jean so nice pick up on the similarities early on. It’s a little less obvious in the original. In 1990 she performed a song called “Sooner or Later” at the Oscars. It’s a much stronger vocal performance without the dancing but still very sassy Madonna. You should react to that one. Her date for the evening was none other than Michael Jackson.
You just can't understand how big Madonna was at her time. Roll up Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga and you might come close. People didn't have as many options so certain artists got over and OVER was pure saturation. Madonna for about a decade was in everything.
She and Michael Jackson were the queen and king of pop in the eighties and nineties. It was such a new version of pop and the lyrics were more explicit. I know I was surprised by the raw emotions she put in every song. I wish i had seen her in person, but know I my parents would never let me go to her v concerts.
The greatest part about this...... Bro here was getting ready to react to the Weird Al version of this song, but Bro here had never heard this song. So he played this song first to prepare for Weird Al. Weird Al opens doors to music you've never heard before. Proven on this channel!
For me, she was the female equivalent of Michael Jackson... talking HUGE pop star, she was and still is IT She was the best looking woman in the world at one point too, in my opinion She's quite an odd character though
"Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson, 1982 "Like a Virgin" by Madonna, 1984 "Like a Surgeon" by Weird Al, 1986 It doesn't surprise me at all that Madonna pulled a bit from Michael, so she could work in a cover/parody during a stage performance. From what I read when Al approached her about his parody not only did she say yes she asked if she could help, and Al said sure.
What a lot of people don't get about this song, and you have to listen real carefully to pick up on this, is that the song is about a girl having her first relationship after a heartbreak. She's comparing the way her new man makes her feel to that of a virgin on her wedding night. If you're going to go deeper into Madonna, you need to react to the song that gave her her nickname: Material Girl.
Billy Jean is not the only mash upwith Like a Virgin, Sugar Pie Honey Bunch was another one. You could react to Like a Virgin during Blond Ambition Tour, you're gonna be very surprised. There are many Madonna songs and performance you could react to, from old to new stuffs.
Madonna was pretty much the only young female pop solo artist in the start of the 1980's (most of the solo charts of the time were all male performers), this left a big untapped audience. In 1978 she was trying to become a New York dancer, but started dating musicians. In 1979/80 she decided she wanted to be in a band, in 1981 she made her fame by daring to be a solo act. Besides being a good song writer and singer, she specifically crafted her wild daring risque image which got her massive attention on MTV, with her fans, and made her a big draw as a live act too. It is the same formula that many other female solo pop artists have templated their performance persona based upon. The image bred controversy, the controversy drew in fans, and resulted in a lot of press and media attention...which usually means success.
I respect her because she was so involved in every artistic aspect of her shows and videos. She wasn't just a girl given lyrics to sing. She wrote her songs and much more. I love that Weird Al parodies this song.
This is why listening to the studio version (or at least the music video version) first is useful -- the best live performances (like this one) have worse sound quality, worse singing (partially because good live versions involve dancing), tangents into crowd-work, and often break down completely into covers of other songs for a verse or two. It's absolute fire in its own way, but it's not a good way to experience the song itself for the first time. Like a virgin -- a music virgin. Also, you're going to miss out on how accurately Weird Al parodies the visuals of the music videos, too.
Watch her Like A Prayer video next and be amazed at the transformation, or watch Like A Virgin live from the Blonde Ambition Tour. The difference in the two performances of LAV is incredible.
Madonna, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, George Michael, Kate Bush, Pat Benatar, Prince, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Bryan Adams.....so many phenomenal artists from the 80's. We don't have iconic artists like them these days
As someone who grew up in the 80s Madonna was groundbreaking and mind blowing. Women in pop weren't doing this. Like people dressed like her. Get cultural influence was on par with Michael Jackson and Prince. Honestly there are books analyzing they influence. She was a legitimate subject of academic study. I would suggest watching her performance of this on the MTV awards it's better. Also her MTV perfomance of Vogue is worth watching.
"Crazy for you"- Sultry track. "True Blue" - 50's vibes. "Take a Bow" w/Babyface- Exquisite duet. One of her best! "Secret" - The sleeper. Sick beat. Definitely more your style. Check 'em out!!
You should check out "Like a Prayer". Believe me as a black girl growing up in South Carolina who lived for music and music videos Madonna was the # 1 Pop Star of my time. Things just kept getting better when Janet Jackson came on the scene. Most of the stuff Pop Princesses do now were already done before.
Yes, as heard and interpreted by an *incel.* Quentin captured the absolute essence of one *and* looked exactly like the diagram in his closing statement *then* black pilled the character - all before the term was even coined. He was so ahead of his time!
The Like a Prayer album was one of the first albums I ever owned as a kid. Like a prayer is still one of my favorite songs. I also Beautiful stranger from one of the Austin powers movies, this used to be my playground from league of their own, cherish, don't tell me, I'll remember from with honors, Express yourself, crazy for you and take a bow.
I enjoy the fact that you prefer the live performance for a first listen, it gives a genuine flair for the vocals and performance. But sometimes, like in this instance, you get something off the wall included with it. But it can still be nice.
You're listening to a tour version of "Like a Virgin" which was performed as a 12th song after constant moving. Also Madonna started as a dancer. Before she didn't have any vocal training. I think you should listen to Papa don't Preach or Like a Prayer to see her different side.
My favorite Madonna is This Used To Be My Playhouse from the movie she was in A League of Their Own. Completely different vibe from Madonna. Great song, great movie.
There is another video to this song, and it matched closer to the studio version. If you haven't guessed yet, her "Thing" was groveling on the floor. You can see another early version of this, if you watch "Lucky Star" It's pretty iconic too, and it pretty much tells you all you need to know about Madonna, in the 80's. To see a bit more innocent version of Madonna, if you can imagine that, you might want to check out "Borderline". Evaluate the original videos, rather than the concert videos. This was the context of those in the 80's, that had access to MTV. By the way, YES. That was Billie Jean.
See "Reservoir Dogs" diner scene for context 😆 Re: Vocals. Her vocal abilities increased/improved exponentially over the years. Saw her in concert a few days after 9/11 at the Staple Center. Surprisingly, one of the best shows I've seen. She executed amazing physical feats and a multitude of costume changes while singing. Impressive to say the very least
You are absolutely correct in saying that her vocals are kinda up & down from her bouncing around and be-boppin all over the place. Her voice can be as clear, crisp and angelic, like you wouldn't believe. I truly love your videos, the expressions on your face, your commentaries, and your smooth voice. You Are The MAN when it comes to these type of videos! You're the BEST out there. Thank you for doing what you love to do, and sharing it with us. Right On my friend, Right On!
There are great Madonna live performances, but I generally think in most cases, you should be reacting to videos from her. Like Michael Jackson, and yes, Weird Al, among others, it's usually better to do her music videos. The most notable performance of "Like a Virgin" though, was at the MTV Video Music Awards, which she is calling back to here, (The wedding dress is a reference to that direct performance, which was, um, notorious, un-chaste, is probably the right word, lot less dancing, a lot more, crawling, let's say...) but in general, most of her videos, have a particular artistic bent to them to go along with the song. The "Like a Virgin" is not as much artistic, although it is iconic in it's own way. After that though, there's as much going into her videos as there is the songs and performances. A short list of highlights, would include, eh "Lucky Star", "Material Girl", "Like a Prayer", "Vogue", "Express Yourself", "Frozen", "Human Nature", "Ray of Light", "Justify My Love", "Erotica" (If you can find an unedited versions of those), "Borderline", "Take a Bow", "Papa Don't Preach"...- There's a lot.
Not sure how old you are, but I have to ask... were you not allowed anywhere near music, especially popmusic growing up? Every song you do says First Time Hearing and you do songs that are many decades old. I get there are genre's you might have not been aware of growing up, I know I was, but your list of artists is so wide ranging it is incredible! Michael Jackson and Madonna were the 80's King and Queen of Pop
This is not her best track. You should listen to her singing Don't Cry For Me Argentina. It's beautiful. She starred in the movie version of the musical Evita and was great.
Her rolling down on the stage at the music awards was a hugh deal.Everyone was talking about it.People couldn't believe she did that.It was way sexual for the time .I was young didn't bother or offend me.Media was all over this.
Not only did she have all the qualities of a star, she was provocative. She's one of the biggest and best pop stars of all time. Probably number one or two, next to Michael Jackson. Check out "Like A Prayer."
Don't Cry for Me on the Evita soundtract. Sometimes I will just play the movie in the background while working instead of music. She was pregnant while shooting that movie and it was very hard on her physically.
You should react to the official music video for this song. The songwriters Billy Billy Stein and Tom Kelly wasn't influenced by MJ's Billy Jean. They were influenced by the Four Tops' Sugar Pie Honey Bunch bassline. Because of the similarity between MJ's Billy Jean and Madonna's Like a Virgin's basslines the musical director Patrick Leonard of this concert the Virgin Tour and Madonna chose to do a mashup of her song and MJ's Billy Jean with her own changes to the lyrics with the genders changed. It was also an homage to MJ because Madonna grew up in Pontiac Michigan where she listened to Motown and Jackson 5 and MJ's music. She was and is a MJ fan. For her next concert tour the Who's That Girl Tour she did her cover of Sugar Pie Honey Bunch in the middle of Like a Virgin and towards the end of the song. The Patrick Leonard was also the musical director of the Jackson 5's Victory Tour in 84 which Madonna and her then boyfriend Jellybean went to see and she met MJ and his brothers backstage after the concert. After she saw MJ's concert she wanted to have Patrick Leonard be her concert tour musical director for her next tour the Virgin Tour and the Who's That Girl Tour. Jonathan Moffett was also the drummer for the Victory Tour and he was the drummer for Madonna's Virgin Tour, Who's That Girl Tour and the Blond Ambition Tour. He played drums on Madonna's True Blue, Like a Prayer and I'm Breathless albums. He also played drums for Madonna's Live Aid performances of Holiday, Into The Groove and Love Makes The World Go Round.
React to Sooner or Later live at the 1990 Oscars for a better example of her live singing. She spayed that night. Fun fact: her date for the event was Michael Jackson.
Just a piece of advice....if you're watching 80s videos, don't do the live version. The 80s was the age of turning music videos into mini movies; the visuals are important.
She was for her time as big as MJ, the Beatles, or Elvis. Or at least as close as any woman had ever come until J-lo, Mariah, Taylor or Beyonce..... And as Dennis Rodman famously said... "she wasn't an acrobat in bed, but she wasn't a dead fish either"
Now that you've started doing some comedy with Bill Burr, would love to see you do Zach Rushing's 1-2 punch of "My First Black Cookout" and "Mama T's Fish Fry" (in that order). I think it will be even more special since you've done "Boot Scootin' Boogie", you'll be one of few that understands his reference to that song.
If you're checking out a song for the first time to compare the original with Weird Al's version you should watch the original music video. Weird Al is usually parodying the video as well as the song.
"Like a Virgin" was written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. Just about any sexual song sang by women in the 80's, were written by men. Like Salt N Papa's "Push It" and "It's None Of Your Business".
This song pretty well sums up everything I found utterly alienating about the '80's. To me, this song is disgusting in its shameless materialism. Still carrying the torch of the anti-war and civil rights movement, I found I was completely out of touch with everyone else. Virtually nobody cared anymore, and I have felt like a nobody pretty much ever since.
She was doing a mash up of her "Like a Virgin" and MJ's "Billie Jean" for that concert, as a tribute to MJ.
Didn’t she do another one with Lady Gaga’s Born This Way and Express yourself?
@@pickupthatblood yes, but that wasn’t a tribute....😜

I'm not sure that "odd" quite covers it. A couple of Dennis Rodman's teammates claimed he was perfectly normal until he dated her.
Her personality is because she is insane. Like the Ideas she pushed. No wonder America went to heck

To do her justice you have to react to different eras, she's a completely different artist from album to album
Hello man, you should react to her "Like a virgin" MTV Music Video Awards in 1984
The Billie Jean bits were not in the released record ..... she's improving this for the live show
A great songs of hers to cover would be Frozen, and Vogue, and her music videos are works of art you should react to.
This was her performance at the MTV Music Awards
This is not her best track. You should listen to her singing Don't Cry For Me Argentina. It's beautiful. She starred in the movie version of the musical Evita and was great.
This song was so huge it got mentioned in Stephen King books and Tarantino movies
What exactly is it about a mashup/medley that is confusing???????

Almost wholesome by today's standards...now I sound as old as I feel...and am.
Yes, this was a scandal! I think in the official video she lost the dress but this was live tv and you couldn't that.
I just looked. I think the big scandal was about the MTV video.
This performance was on Primetime TV, hence the outrage by parents. The real controversy was her performance in her Blonde Ambition tour.
Love to see you review to NOFX, "Don't Call Me White."
80s pop, everything was inspired by Michael
Confessions on a dance floor was my first madonna CD in 2005 (hung up was my favorite) 😑 I didnt dive into her earlier music till I was older.
I am so happy you listened to this before you did Weird Al parody. Props!
Vocally she is great but this is a live fairly active stage production as well as a very early poppy song. Her music runs the gambit.
Two men wrote the song and both billie Jean and like a virgin are inspired by The 4 tops song called "Can't help myself"
Next madonna sooner or later from the Oscar's 1991 and like a prayer live from Paris queen of pop
Please do a reaction to Madonna " Like a Prayer" live
I've not seen this performance. Love how she worked in Billie Jean. This is why live stuff is great, even though studio sounds better.
If your looking for another song by her, one of my favorites is 'Papa don't preach'.
For live she crushed it
Try Express yourself live Blonde Ambition tour., for a great performance
MrLBoyd: I don’t know guys I’m confused. Me: Welcome to Madonna. 😜
I know you did this for Weird Al. Check out his video “The Saga Begins”. You reacted to the original version a couple of weeks ago.
You should react to the official music video for this song.

I bet that dude that hopped on stage left the show with more than a broken heart.
React to Sooner or Later live at the 1990 Oscars for a better example of her live singing. She spayed that night. Fun fact: her date for the event was Michael Jackson.
Like a Prayer
You're right. This did have a very Billie Jean esque feel to it
Just a piece of advice....if you're watching 80s videos, don't do the live version. The 80s was the age of turning music videos into mini movies; the visuals are important.
Great content 👌
Madonna: *literally sings lyrics to Billie Jean*
MrLboyd: I can't put my finger on why this sounds like Billie Jean...
The song "Oh Father" is a great Madonna song about her not so great relationship with her dad.
Madonna was the new Cher when it came to head scratching, eye bolding outlandish fashion outfits
And Cher still hasn't forgiven her for it.
You should have listened to the official video, not the live one. The "Billie Jean" stuff was only added in the live performance.

I’m pretty sure this bass groove is the same as Billy Jean, just transposed from a minor to major key
You should listen to Papa don't preach by Madonna
This live concert version was an ODD choice for a first time Madonna listen lol appreciate it tho!

Like a Virgin and Billie Jean have practically the same Bass Line.
But also also, next thing from Madonna, probably Poppa Don't Preach
Do "Live To Tell"
You need to hear BabyMetal
If you're checking out a song for the first time to compare the original with Weird Al's version you should watch the original music video. Weird Al is usually parodying the video as well as the song.

You should really listen to Take a Bow by Madonna. I know you like live performances, but you should watch the official video.
I hope you take a few moments to see what she looks like now. I still would love to see you react to "Trigger Happy" buy Weird Al.
Now check out Weird Al's Like a Surgeon
"Like a Virgin" was written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. Just about any sexual song sang by women in the 80's, were written by men. Like Salt N Papa's "Push It" and "It's None Of Your Business".
If you like live concerts try peter Frampton live #1 do you feel like We do 👍
This song pretty well sums up everything I found utterly alienating about the '80's. To me, this song is disgusting in its shameless materialism. Still carrying the torch of the anti-war and civil rights movement, I found I was completely out of touch with everyone else. Virtually nobody cared anymore, and I have felt like a nobody pretty much ever since.
Weird Al does "Like a surgeon"
Clearly MrLyBoyd has just came out the coma in 1995.
