I could relate to most api in the gpio example they all look like they are doing similar steps taken to initialise gpio in arm m too.
I have not had the chance to work the cortex m but have read various times that the major difference when trying to make a decision between the two is the power consumption. Cortex A is fast but takes a who lot of power while cortex m is designed more for embedded applications where power needs to be conserved as much as possible.
As far as the advantage, I have much less power consumed while running my programs. The alternative right now is running Linux on the device. That really just bloats up the hardware for no real good reason. There are many more reasons but as of right now that is the main reason why I began with starterware.
