What I like about this performance is that it really sounds like a duet more than a cantata with a trumpet solo. Massive shout-out to the outstanding trumpet soloist!!
One of Bach's most popular Cantata's, wonderfully performed and a long term favourite of mine. Not a moment when I didn't have a smile watching the video. In my experience, Sibylla Rubens gave one of the very best performances by a Soprano I have ever heard of Bach's music. (and I am not a great fan of the soprano voice). Only one small thing which has spoiled this experience: Why has the very excellent trumpeter not been credited in the introduction, in spite of the roar of approval from the audience during the applause. What a superb performance especially from him but also the other nine members of the ensemble . Greetings to you in St Gallen from West Cornwall.
I had those smiles all the way through as well. I am so glad I had enough insight years ago to buy the score. Now that I've been thoroughly washed with the music, I must play it again and watch the excellent performers.

Bach is fiendishly difficult for singers, especially in the fast passages, unlike Handel whose arias every baroque singer wants to sing.Bach treats the solo human voice like an instrument and it takes an exceptional singer to cope with this .Sibylla Rubens is wonderful in this Cantata and the band is great.

The very best rendition of the 51st I've ever heard. Such clarity and precision evident everywhere and at all times. The only thing that bothers me is the uncalled-for quickening of the tempo on the "Alleluja!" section. It seems that most versions do this, and I cannot understand why. It is much more effective (and stylistically proper) to simply maintain the same tempo as the preceding "Chorale." Mais c'est la vie.... Many thanks to everyone. BRAVO! 👍❤️
That bass player behind the soprano throughout most of this cantata--I don't think I've ever seen someone with faces of utmost concentration and a bit of panic simultaneously mixing together. He knows that his leviathan of an instrument makes it very difficult to do the rapid, fancy finger-work and instrumentation that come so easily with smaller instruments. So he has to work extra hard to keep up with the soprano's, trombone's and violins' virtuoso somersaults. His eyes say it all: "I'll be left in the dust so I. HAVE. TO. KEEP. UP!!!"
I think you're not a bass player, right? In playing the bass in Continuo there is no place for panic, and rapiditiy is not the problem for a professional bass player: It needs concentration, precision and perfect intonation in accordance to the other bass instruments and the soloists. Markus Bernhard made a really great job!! Otherwise he would not be invited to play in such a marvelous ensemble! By the way: There are much more challenging bass parts in Bach's Oeuvre than this one, for example the Aria "Erleucht auch meine finstren Sinne" in the 5th cantata of he Christmas Oratorio (often played without double bass). The arias are always more challenging than the Tutti-choruses...
Thank you for posting this exquisite performance of one of my favourite Bach Cantatas. Perhaps the final movement (#5) should be honoured with its own direct link (as per the "SHOW MORE" header panel information) 15:33 "Alleluja" even though it flows seamlessly on from the previous chorale fantasia movement, ("Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren"), it has a completely different coloratura form with its own distinctively glorious lyrics, (perfectly articulated by the outstanding Soprano Sibylla Rubens), superbly accompanied by the fugal trumpet embellishment.
I would be omissive if I didn't give credit to this recording of the Bach cantata Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen by the J.S. Bach Foundation. Soprano and chamber group give an excellent rendition of thei Bach cantata.
Un peu déçu au début : sur le 1er aria le chant est déjà d'une grande difficulté, le tempo en rajoute encore de par sa rapidité, c'est à la limite des possibilités d'une voix humaine. Pour une fois je trouve le choix de M.Lutz discutable mais ce n'est que mon avis. Pour le reste je trouve que c'est parfait, Sibylla Rubens a quelque chose de l'inoubliable Edith Mathis, virtuosité et émotion notamment. 👍

Excellent performance. This takes me back to a recording of about 50 years ago featuring the great soprano Teresa Stich-Randall performing with Maurice Andre and the Orchestra of the Saar conducted by Karl Ristenpart. A difficult work to perform well and both groups achieved that goal. Many thanks!

Nur verstehe ich nicht das Sie für so einen Solo eine, ehr Opera Sängerin, gewählt haben. Mit alle Respekt für diese Frau, aber das ist doch nicht eine Barock Stimme die hier passt meine ich.
Die wunderbare und flexible Stimme von Frau Rubens hat doch keinen Moment störend an Oper erinnert, oder? - ausserdem war der Spitzenton im Halleluja ein Genuss :)

Der Dirigent sollte diese Kantate mit Lenneke Ruiten aufführen. Mann, Mann, was für eine großartige Leistung das wäre. Ich habe Lenneke Ruiten mit BWV 51 mit anderen Dirigenten gehört. Was für eine wundervolle Leistung sie geben kann. Bach hätte eine großartige Erfahrung gemacht, sie zu hören, die er sich nie hätte vorstellen können. Kurz gesagt, der beste BWV 51 stammt von Lenneke Ruiten.
As a violist who's played this piece multiple times (love it!) I really feel for the poor violist who is the only one who doesn't get to play the fun chorale opening. Such great energy that movement has! (Oh, I guess the trumpet doesn't play then either but trumpet players are used to sitting tacet for many movements at once. I don't feel badly for them at all, lol.)
I rediscovered Bach during this crisis. But it's his lovely choral music ---especially new to me--- that has captured me. This performance was a real treat, my first experience of Bach performed live. Thank you.
Harnoncourt said that this cantata, refering to the initial aria and the final solo, is impossible for a lady soprano. I agree with the master. Despite the huge effort, and the artistic quality of the performers, there is always something missing. The trumpet is a fake baroque instrument wth holes, in fact an instrument invented recently. Excelent high strings and bass section. Interesting global vision by the conductor aiming rethorics and perfection of intonation and losing authenticity and real life. Keep the good work. Thumbs-up.

Sybilla Rubens has a very good technics, her song is perfect but... boring.
I cannot disagree more with this churlish comment. Perhaps Schwartzkopf or Battle offer a bit more frisson, but this is marvelous singing and playing.
