- Joining Robert on the podcast this week is Dave Borlace from the Just Have a Think TH-cam channel.
Dave was with us recently at our Everything Electric LONDON expo, and we just had to get him back here on the podcast.
Diving straight into how best we can tackle the climate crisis, along with the pros and cons of small nuclear reactors and off-shore and on-shore wind. We also learn what utter nonsense the WLTP range numbers of EVs are!
Robert also shares the scary fact that the area of land currently being used for golf courses in the UK, if used for renewables could more than satisfy the whole country’s energy demand, and rightly he asks “Do we want Golf or Energy?!”. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below!
Once these two get started, they really are UNSTOPPABLE! We hope you enjoy this very entertaining and enlightening chat.

You two are such good science communicators. Smart, informed, positive, and very funny! Please make your joint shows a regular thing, two or four times a year!
We were thinking exactly the same!! Please do this!
Smeg is losing me,I questioned him about ev fires and why they happen and chargers being installed but not connected considering the network person said there is enough supply !!!! IF PEOPLE CHANGE TO EVS WE NEED TO KNOW IF THE SAME HAPPENED TO ICE CARS WE WOULD NEVER BUY THEM,I enjoy the reviews
(WINDOW SHOPPING) despite their stance AGAINST ICE cars !! If people need to tow a heavy trailor an ev WON'T do but ev channels can't accept that
@@stum8374 define "heavy trailer"! My EV6 does tow 1750kg and I did tow a boat from Brittany to NL without an issue (apart the obvious hassle of charging providers mostly not being prepared for this, so needed to unhitch the boat twice to charge). And there will be EVs soon that are capable of even heavier towing...
It is all under development and improving infrastructure means soon it will be no issue at all.

Christmas special!
I sense a bit of a bromance here. You were almost finishing off each other's sentences at points there. My own admission, when Fully Charged established itself over a decade ago, I thought about supporting it. Back then all I able to do was subscribe to the channel. Then Dave's Just Have a Think channel started, and because his was a little more geared to reporting the effects of humans on the planet, rather than technology solutions [I know you all do a bit of both], I quickly found the channel that I wanted to back with my meagre funds. I was able to point to Dave's videos and say to family and friends, "this is what I was trying to explain to you". Dave has gone from strength to strength and Fully Charged/Everything Electric channels have rocketed in popularity. Everybody I know has subscribed to your channels. You people really are part of my fabric and I honestly can't remember what it was like without you there. Long may it continue.👍
Love both of your TH-cam Cannels! Thank you for all your efforts.
Wonderful stuff. Helps re-adjust the brain. A good symbiosis. Rational, informed, enlightening and entertaining. More please
We ❤ our Solar and Yackandandah are an inspiration to the rest of us Aussies 👍
I suggested to Dan Ceasar back in 2021 to get collaborating and discussing with Dave @JHAT - I'm so happy this has happened, such eye opening and deep thinking content - well done all!
Love this! I could listen to you both all day. It's like listening to your 2 favourite uncles having a chat. 🙂
Top notch people on this podcast! ❤🎉😊
Bobby tries, but he is a silly old BBC Comedy Department loonie leftie, who would have believe that a biological man can become a woman , just because the man says so. And Borlace would like o see us living in a hippie commune in the welsh hills, smoking dope and eating magic mushrooms. If only cave dwelling Stone Age people would have had dope and magic mushrooms then no doubt Borlace would think that they had the perfect lifestyle.
Tony Seba said this S curve of change.
And " horse meat was cheap when the Ford model T production line started. "
Hahaha 👍 😊
AND ICE cars were less polluting than horses-the streets were putrid
@@MauriceOldisin NY you had to pay to remove your dead horse.
No one did
@@andrewsaint6581 Hahaha 😆
My two favourites on at the same time, together - what a delight. Thanks a million. Elizabeth in Ireland
I just finished watching one of Dave's episodes when this podcast popped up in my feed. 🙂
Yeah i went from on to the other too. I may be overdosing.
Great show Robert and Dave you were on it 100%. Very funny, entertaining and informative.
Thank you gents, another brilliant discussion! You are gifted communicators, conveying the urgency with humour, without dumbing down the vital science, and not forgetting the good news that gives the lie to all the naysayers out there. Superb.
Love this episode, such great flowing entertainment full of information. Came across as such a natural conversation between two mates. One of the best summarying the size of the climate problems that is coming.
Beside the fact you two together provided a boatload of well supported and listenable to facts, I just giggled my way through this and I felt consequently refreshed. It’s like optimistic therapy in a troubled world. Thank you. Please get together again 😀😀😀😀😀
Thank you both. I am a long term subscriber to both your channels.
Great show. Two of my favourite orators. To answer Dave's query on UK electricity demand, peak demand in winter is 62GW, which is considerably lower than peak generating capacity presently.
This is honestly, my favourite episode of the podcast so far. Hilarious and fascinating at the same time.
More of this please. I loved hearing Dave unscripted.
Just popped by from listening to this on Spotify. I listen to the podcast every week, it’s always informative and quite often fun. This is hands down the best episode I have heard so far. It was both informative AND fun. Please, more from this team up.
Community batteries with a rapid charger are spreading here in Sydney.
Two TH-cam legends (for me anyway) together…. cant wait to hear what u have to talk about.
29:28 "Kingsmill Bond is an energy strategist at the Rocky Mountain Institute" (RMI) P.S. greetings from Colorado

@@hfohfohfo very good👍 😊 .
Thank you for posting such a great show. Really informative and funny, in truth thats the way to educate people. Should definitely be made a part of of the school curriculum, kids would love it
Respect to Dave B's huge knowledge. Amazing conversation.
Get this information out to the doubters.
It is the Awesome Dave and Robert Show... I do so enjoy learning from you both (and everyone else in your association).
Such a great listen, I could have listened for another hour very easily! Love Daves channel as well as the Fully Charged/Everything electric.
Make sure you drop into the Yackandandah bakery the next time you are there. Best meat pies in the country 👌
My two favourite podcasters (I'm a patreon to both) on the same video!!! What's not to like 🙂
Oh I loved this episode. You two are the perfect fit. We need a podcast with both of you. Thank you. Loved it 🥰
I meant a regular podcast not just a one off. Lol😂
I remember a while back when climate change became really apparently urgent and the next was said: the public isn’t listening to scientists because they don’t communicate the science often and clear enough for everyone to understand. Then you two and others popped up on TH-cam 😊
Since when did this become apparent and urgent? Not seen a single change
@@mattx4253Remind me, how many thousands of people died in that extraordinary heat wave in Europe a couple of years ago?
I recommend Paul Beckwith if you need a little refresher course on what's going on. He's on TH-cam.
One of the best podcasts I've watched, thanks a lot for all you both do.
Another excellent informative podcast Don’t ever stop doing these Robert, proof that important concepts need time spent on them in this age of the “tldr”.
Huge respect for borh of you.
You two were just great, please do it again. 👍👍👍👍
A great, informative conversation between Robert & Dave - an excellent complement to the live shows. 👏👏
This was pure gold.😊😊
Wicked chat. Thanks so much. You two work really well together. Thanks for everything you both do for moving us towards a better future.
Talking about chargers not working in extremely low temperatures, 😢 the largest EV charger company here in Québec is Circuit Électrique and in the last 5 years I’ve yet to go to any of their site where one of their units didn’t work….-30c or +30c. 😮
Thank you for this time spent watching you both.
Great show Robert and Dave you were on it 100%.
What a delightful natter between two informed and concerned gentlemen; please forgive me, but almost the Statler and Waldorf of the scientific set. Thoroughly enjoyable, while also being shocking as some new information (for me) regarding Arctic and Antarctic climate change consequences percolated through. Please do this again soon!
Thank you very much. I could have watched another whole hour.
Loved seeing you two Legends together, having a good old natter.
Doing a great job for humanity indeed, being a part of the solution rather than the problem.
Your works are loved by all us nature lovers.
My favourites! You two are true inspirations, thank you! 💚💚💚
Delightful. A couple of guys with lots of knowledge and a great sense of humour. You wanna go for a beer sometime? :)
Two very smart and often funny Gents having a great chin-wag. Loved it - and loved the content.
Great discussion and teamwork. Would love to see you two address issues on a regular basis.
This TH-cam video is a meaningful conversation. I want people in the media who are interested in the idea of nuclear reactors because they don't know any better about the reality of the problems. Plus, I love that you're doing this podcast, Mr. Lewellyn, especially since I watched red dwarf when it first came out. Cheers from the States!
Two very sane (i.e., intelligent) commentators! More please.
I forgot to say how I always suspected Dave to be a funny guy, that twinkle in his eyes as he delivers JHAT. I was right, it was lovely to see just how hilarious he is when led astray by the an on form Robert😂
More please chaps.👍👏
My two favorite TH-cam channels together. I love it.
You and Dave getting together was great!
Please do more of this podcast. This type of podcast where two people in the know who are in touch with so many across the industries involved sit down to recap what they’re learning. That is fantastic because we get to keep up along with you and learn more. And you talk about books that you’re reading which is very helpful to us too because obviously we can’t buy every single book. And I’m a librarian so it’s extra helpful to me in that regard. Because then I can help people whether it’s the public or researchers to locate certain types of information that they need more expertise on. So it’s cool to hear little snippet reviews on this or that or the other book. Really appreciate that!
Do more podcasts together when you are able. 😊Spot on!
Ah hour of pure joy. Thank you Rob, Thank you Dave.
Great stuff! I'm sharing this with everyone I know.
Great Presentation. Thank you. You are both fantastic and clever people.
Could you please have Dave on the show once a month - it would help a lot of people with their sanity.
Awesome conversation. The Highlander PS kindness is always free.😊❤
Love your work, but the secret is the grid capacity upgrade costs.
I have worked on a 1700 towers transmission lines construction project.
I have worked on expensive city street construction work, shift work.
Economics in both is complex and expensive.
Great team up👍🏼gave good dynamics and a positive outlook.
Very thorough reply Michael thanks for making the effort. My main point was more to do with having guests on the podcast that have a different view so we don’t just get people agreeing with each other … I think there’s benefit in debates. But, certainly you’ve identified some key issues … James May would agree with you in saying effort should go into faster and cheaper and more available options for charging instead of bigger batteries. There’d still be a place for larger cars for those who do longer motorway journeys and have a bladder range that’s longer than mine! I have two EVs a small city car that’s never seen a public charger I it’s life and a bigger car for longer journeys and for when I need extra space. The running costs of both are cheaper than the medium sized hatchback used to own.
Yes Robert that was a joy thank you both 👍👍👍
Excellent! One of the best pod casts so far.
As much as I enjoy listening to & subscribe to Daves show, theres no way I could listen to Robert for an hour or so.
Brilliant! As has been proved before, EV and renewable energy supporters are just the people who understand maths.
And laughter
Nice discussion.
One of your best podcasts so far (sorry everyone else!) Pure F&F (funny & factual) you should make it a weekly event of the two of you just rambling- fantastic. Long time since ive laughed so much 👍
very informative, great listen
Everything electric show in Sydney was fantastic. I would really like to come back to the UK and attend one in the UK . Great podcast. Keep smiling everyone 😄
It's great to hear on a future energy discussion the phrase "job's a good 'un". Lovely
Great content, thank you
Great show. I could listen for hours to you two.
Great team work, great podcast there.
58:59 credit where it is due - that was an incredible (credible?) mozzie sound!
all in all, a great conversation to listen-in on - I will look up 'Just Have a Think'.
Thank you for stating the obvious and pointing out "we're entitled to be as stupid and profligate as we want to be." The elephant in the room.
Great podcast. Thanks both for all your efforts.
This guy is my favourite channel on green technology. Very professional.
Terrific conversation. You covered so many basic, important topics with humor and clarity.
Excellent and enjoyable...
The two of you really work well.
I just knew this would be great when it popped up in my subscription feed and it was awesome indeed!
More Robert & Dave please! Brilliant chemistry and info sharing 💯♥
I have been enjoyed, so thank you for delivering.
Yes! Find a format so we can have more of the two of you! 💚💚💚
This was absolutely the best interview ever. Robert’s style changes based on the person he is interviewing. All the other autists watching this picked it out and know exactly what I mean :)
15:52 I have been sharing Ripple's ideas among my community and peers. I think it is an excellent idea!!!!
Loved this episode!
Another excellent, thought-provoking episode!
That's quite a double act. More of this please.
I was on holiday in Mallorca and there were loads of electric cars driving around and a few of them sounded like muted TIE fighters.
A brilliant, informative podcast, and very funny!
It would be great if the Fully Charged Show could do a show on tech that doesn't need energy - Fully Unplugged?
Lots of ancient Persian tech that keeps things cool (in the desert), passive housing construction in Mexico, Persian pigeon towers that produce fertilizer, a ferry in the EU that uses river currents, a funicular in the UK that uses gravity & water, a ropeway in Yorkshire that uses gravity & weight (due to close soon) etc. Sometimes in order to go forward we need to go back (the less energy we need, the less we have to generate).
This is a great idea.
Adding Dave Borlane to your pool of knowledge brings the best out of both of you. Proper honest science, I look forward to many more podcasts in the future.
Peter Caswell
That was a good chat to listen to.
I'm going to assume both have you have read Tony Seba's and rethink's report on battery and renewable requirements?
Build capacity plus .... 30%(?) But still at far less cost than Nuclear???
.
Along those lines?
43:20 - "...empirical evidence rather than hysterical evidence..." Hah!! That's a keeper!!
great episode, love the discussion on the nuclear front. they do however drop the ball on the cost for nuclear. sure in the 60s, 70s and 80s they got a lot of subsidies but by the time they were economically on par, they stopped building them(mid 90s). so yeah we need new subsidies for nuclear if we want the industry that can build them to come back.
about the combustion engine, 25-30% efficient, that's really low. modern ICE's are higher than that. diesels peak around 43% in cars while petrol engines are between 35 - 41%. Large engines in marine applications have a high thermal efficiency with a peak of 55%.
the skyactiv-X engine from Mazda has a peak thermal efficiency of 41%. This is because of their high compression ratio resulting in a compression ignition engine (spcci = spark controlled compression ignition)
Two of the best people on this planet
Thoroughly enjoyed this podcast. One comment though about mosquitoes: if you want to feel them and not just hear them buzz by go to the Caribbean; they are like little Draculas.
