    Daniel Kwan just pointed out a great tip - get closer to the ground when getting wobbles or any sketchy situation. Helps prevent you from falling at a height and lessens the impact

      Also, if you are not already close to ground then by doing so it will apply a force downwards which reduces wobbling. Ofc if eskateboarding, letting go of the throttle helps too.

    Dislocated my arm with the first way to fall, might have been the strain of holding the position on a steep road for quite a long bail. In hindsight a pair of knee pads would have saved me :( Don’t skimp on protections guys, injuries can cut short your riding forever

    Thanks for this particular video; I am a slower healer now than 20 years ago, so protection is key for me if I want to keep skating and progressing. I wanted to share my particular method for butt protection… I noticed I was hitting the same place on my right side regularly when learning Coleman slides. I sewed a Velcro patch over that spot on my pants and slapped a worn-down slide puck on there. I wear padded shorts, but the puck saves my pants and the pads underneath if I wash out.

    It takes some athletic ability to ride a board at speed over concrete/asphalt. Natural athletes, apply within. All others, show yourselves out. Stay safe.

    I would also recommend rain skating because you fall often and sliding out takes longer which adds a lot of experience of falling

    Hey man great video as usual! I've read tons of your articles on your blog great source of informations! I have a question. I want to build a "cheap" topmount downhill set up. Which one would you rather go for between 160mm Caliber Hanger + Randal 42 degree base plates OR 165mm Arsenal trucks /44 degree ? Having downhill in mind. I'll probably go for a 31-35" x 9.25-10" longboard deck. Thank you!

    • @downhill254skate
      @downhill254skate  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@downhill254skate Thanks! Probably something around 22-25! I've heard the bushing that comes with those are not top so will get Venoms or Riptide tall bushings

    Man they gave me this a bit too late 😂 I fell off my electric longboard going 30+ mph and broke my elbow and got massive road rash 😐 but it could’ve been worse by a lot. Luckily I didn’t try to catch myself or run it off..

      It happens! It's all a learning experience :)

  • @marcuswalker7312
    @marcuswalker7312 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing I learned from silverfish back in the day is to put gorilla tape on your butt where you slide on it. Learning to heelside slide you will go through tons of shorts and the gorilla tape means you only go through one pair and don’t have to worry about butt rash

      You can sow leather patches to shorts/pants and once they are worn put new ones on. And better use salopettes for more protection

  • @franciscohompler2773
    @franciscohompler2773 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    About the problem of slowing down when falling: On my leather I have shoe sole patches that really slow me down. You cant do that when only wearing knee pads of course. I think when wearing leathers braking patches could make the difference of hitting an obstacle and not hitting it.
    Do you think you could benefit of having braking sole kneepads and elbows on leathers?

    • @downhill254skate
      @downhill254skate  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes there could be a benefit. Could slow you down. However I can see them catching on the ground and maybe twisting a arm or a leg in a way it's not supposed to. I guess leather is fine cause it can slide

    Nice video once again.
    My main fear is the fall on the back like at 3:41"
    With no time to turn around and fall on the hands or knees.
    I tried this a couple of time, it's painful...
    Also, I often fall on the shoulder.
    Two years ago, I fell on the shoulder, at slow speed (!!), but shoulder's bone break...! Two months to heal...
    Once again, no possibility to fall properly.
    Even at slow speed, because of my position when I fell, no way to turn around and fall on the hands/gloves or knees/pads.
    Sometimes there is no way to fall properly (but for me it's more "often" than "sometimes" aha... :)

    • @downhill254skate
      @downhill254skate  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      with the right protective gear, you'll be ok for the most part. But as you said, someimes theres isn't a way to fall properly :(

    • @-zoave-
      @-zoave- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah right, but for me it's really common.... Yesterday I fell, doing a backside slide glovedown, and once again I fell on the shoulder and the hip bone... I don't know if one time I succeed to fall properly...
      Infortunately, it seems to me that there is no protection to protect shoulders from bone-breaking shocks. Just some with shoulder pads, but it's just to protect against abrasion and small shock, not against breaking bones, like motorcycle back protectors can do.
      I think my main goal now is to learn to fall :)
      I'm going to fall 100 times a day, instead of trying to learn slides, aha ;)
      Before this shoulder's bone break, I never be afraid with speed, since my childhood, I have always been a hothead, I have done several extreme sports without ever being afraid of injury.
      But since the day I broke my shoulder bone, (at really slow speed, almost standstill...! I don't understand how I managed to do that...) I'm afraid to slide with speed, to learn stand up slides...
      Little by little, I manage to ease my apprehension, I slide at higher and higher speeds, but not yet at really high speeds, I haven't exceeded around 35/40 kph yet. Also, I hope to get to stand-up soon. And so, do stand-up on small speed, moderate speed, higher speed...
      It's why I need to manage to fall properly :)
