The E,L & Powell concert that I saw in September, 1986 was fabulous!
In true quad, superior concert sound quality.
    Playing as good as ever.
I just wish they played their EXCELLENT version of LOCOMOTION!

This version is half way the demo version and the final version (also the live versions sounds similar to this one)

Keith's last truly great masterpiece imo, performed to perfection RIP three Great British stars

Totally agree with you. It's not easy to say that, but he'd never come up with anything as solid as this during the next 3 decades! Well, most bands won't reach 1/10 of In The Hot Seat and 1/15 of Love Beach (which I do like from "For you" on)

    • @FukiMakai

I think last Keith's masterpiece was, or it was going to be, Crossing the Rubicon. The album didn't come to fruition after ELP breaking up again in 1998, and the piece was featured as the Ending theme of Godzilla Final Wars in 2004, but Crossing was going to be the next Tarkus.
They say there are demos recorded by Keith (and likely produced by Will Alexander) but the audio never appeared, I'm 10 years wanting it to be shared.

The Jimi Hendrix of keyboard players, the absolute top + two absolutely soulful mates with unmatched pedigree, prior work with Jeff Beck and King Crimson. Mind blowing. This is it, you are there. This is the top of prog from soulful and courageous artists who see to the end of the horizon.

I saw them in1986. In Chicago Illinois. ELPPOWEL. Great show. My friend gave me tickets front row right in front of Keith. Spectacular.
So sad they are gone. But they can play in Heavens venue.
I don't think anyone can be better than Keith on keyboards.

Boy, did this arrangement ever tighten up by the time it was recorded. And my God, that Yamaha GX-1 - it really is the best synthesizer anyone ever made in terms of sheer musicality. That's some nice bass playing. Listen to how clean those muted 16th notes are.

    • @tose917
      @tose917 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

True. I read that Greg had to make some changes on how he played the bass while Cozy was with them. He did it to make sure he could follow Cozy’s insane bass drums technique and sound.
Cozy’s trademarks we’re that he used the double bass drums as a lead instrument and he was always known push the rhythm like an animal.
Some one asked Ritchie Blackmore what were the main differences between playing with Ian Paice and Cozy Powell, he said that Ian always played in the pocket, and Cozy was always pushing especially when he was in Rainbow. He loved doing that to Ritchie. If you ever see Ritchie smiling and looking back Cozy, that meant that Cozy was ready to go all out with Ritchie.
Cozy did a similar thing when he went to play with Keith and Greg. A great example of that is the live version of Fanfare For The Common Man that they recorded in Lakeland, Fl. First of all that version is a lot faster than the original and if You really pay attention, Cozy pushed Keith closed ti his very limit, but Emerson responded to Cozy by doing a very fast run on the synthesizer, Cozy could not do the same by just playing the tom toms, so instead he went back to answer Keith’s run with a very fast foot work on the double bass drums and hitting the China and Crash cymbals to cover that part. It was amazing, I went to that concert and I was 4 rows from the stage. Cozy’s sound is very difficult to explain, he had such power that it felt like someone was throwing bombs on stage. The next day my chest felt very sore from the sound of his bass drums.
In the meantime, Greg NEVER missed a beat even when Keith and Cozy were going at it. He covered Cozy’s double bass drums perfectly. All of their 3 albums are available now for download on iTunes. Please check them out.
One last thing, pay attention at how much Greg had to change his usual tone to a more “metallic” tone so that it could match the sound that the band had at the time. Too bad that that tour ended up a mess due to bad management etc.
I think that they even lost money because they had to fired almost everyone from their management comp.
They ended up paying the rest of the tour with their own money. By then Cozy had lost interest in the band and left, plus all of the legendary disagreements between Keith and Greg were starting to show up again.

@@tose917 Yeah, I remembered Keith saying he left the ELPowell tour with about $450 in his pocket. :/ I found Cozy's playing very exciting; Keith's material was just what it needed to be at that time for Cozy to come in. I remember this thing with Cozy where if a cymbal that needed hitting was on his left, that arm started out over on the *right* and just whipped all the way over.

@@hubbsllc yeah watch the slow and easy video. I thought that was cool! he didn't have time for that in ELP though

This is an absolutely beautiful find for me. After initially hearing ELPowell on vinyl, back in the day, I loved it. But I was disappointed to find the final production treatment didn't really stand the test of time once I revisited it many years later on CD rerelease.
There is a demo version of The Score out there, which was obviously put together in a project studio before they settled on the final arrangement. That is good too, because Cozy is just having a blast. But this version is the arrangement which made it to the album, and appears to be the ghost tracks put down by the band in the live room, after they'd already got most of the parts worked out, without any (or very little) overdubs.
Hearing Keith vamp time on the lower register in the intro section really reminds me of his finest playing with The Nice. And that Arpeggiator section before what would become the first vocal section, which didn't make the final mix, is just fucking cosmic.
I really hope, now that he's sadly shuffled off this mortal coil, that someone will remix ELPowell to include the raw keyboard tracks, before they were spliced and diced in whatever MIDI editor was en vogue at the time this album was originally released. Thanks very much for uploading this. I can't stop listening to it.

with you on it. the staccato quick chord comping slays me, it is just wonderful + the other two guys. besides the great sounds of Cozy's drums, something else I notice is how the tonal intonation of the bass guitar is just perfectly in tune, like perfect-pitch in tune, museum precise is just everyday stuff it seems.
Let me tell you how much I like this track, starting @ 5:05 I made that part a ring tone for my phone. When my phone rings that is what I hear, the vamp leading up to the GS-1 chord spill and resolve. It is intoxicating.

I've had this album from release in '86 and still play it all the time! First time I've heard this- it should be released as a bonus track on a remastered re-release of this album imo. Also just found out about the Sprocket Sessions so will be ordering that asap 👍😁

Wow what a great piece, and I think if you listen closely, that is actually Carl Palmer on the drums because Carl admitted he did most of the demos during that period, including "Touch and Go" but Geffen would not let him out of his contract to record the actual album.

    • @FukiMakai
      @FukiMakai 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Robert Creighan Then you mean this is an ELPowell demo by Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
You know what? This sounds better than the studio and even live performance... better keyboards and better drum sound (Carl Palmer!!) ELP would perform in 1987, but sadly it never happened. As my imagination is very powerful, it would sounded similar to this.

Fully Agree Giuliano Motta ! R.I.P. Cozy.

    • @brianlobo1512

This is totally Powell: fills heavy on cymbals, solid double bass and overall solid timekeeping put this out of palmer's style. Palmer also leads heavy with the right hand which I don't hear here.

I've always loved the recorded version and this is great too, but I wish they could have cut another version - with the instrumentation and approach they had from around '71/72, [Hammond organ, less bombastic electronics etc]. Just my point of view.
