Today I will be making some glow sticks from scratch. First I have to make a common glow stick chemical called TCPO. Then, I'll combine the TCPO with a few other chemicals to make some homemade glow sticks.

Hi Nile Red. Dye chemist here. This is a great video but I just wanted to give some commentary about the dye concentration you used. Fluorescence is highly efficient and more concentrated solutions (even just a few mg) will self quench the fluorescence. It may seem counterintuitive, but try even less dye for more light output. Dye molecules are flat and nonpolar and will form non fluorescent aggregates at high concentrations. This is a static quenching mechanism. Dyes can also deactivate excited neighbors through collisions, so-called dynamic quenching.Colder solutions will also be brighter due to decreased thermal deactivation of the excited state. This may not be noticeable though because dye excitation in a glow stick is based on local collisions in a reaction mixture where reaction kinetics determine light output. Higher temp will give faster rates therefore more light output. I would be curious to see if you could achieve comparable brightness in a fridge with the added benefit of extending the life of the glow stick. Keep these videos coming!

I bit one as a kid, didn't get any glass in my mouth but ended up with glowing lips.. And it does taste nasty lol.. Probably 20 years ago and I remember it well. Didn't get sick either but I doubt I swallowed any.

I gotta say, Nile...as the son of a chemist that worked as one for 50 yrs, you are by far the most funny and interesting chemist I’ve ever come across. This channel is amazing and you are a super ambassador for the world of chemistry. Chemists DO have a sense of humor. NileRed; Haha, aww damn! I really had hoped that at least you would be allowed some freedom to pursue 'amateur' chemistry (since you obviously know what you're doing and everything gets really well documented on video).
I really find it extremely sad that a small subset of people were allowed to ruin such a noble scientific hobby for the rest of us; however, I am equally happy that you have still been able to find ways of doing these projects (with the support of people who do still have access) AND of publicly sharing them with the rest of the world.
Hopefully, one day, your business will have grown enough that you are able to pursue all of your scientific questions, without anyone trying to hold you back...

Reptillian; There are different types depending on the industry your company specializes in.
Usually small businesses would buy from resellers, but once a company becomes large enough they can apply for a license to cut out the middle man.
It is a pretty involved process, however, since you need to be 100% sure that the public cannot (within reason) gain access to the chemicals any easier than if they had never been moved from the manufacturer's premesis in the first place.
In practice this means that both the manufacturer and the relevant authorities have to be satisfied with your security infrastructure and access protocols, during every inspection, which pretty effectively prohibits all small groups from conducting their own experiments/research.
Needless to say, it really warms my heart that someone, with only some undergraduate training and a passion for science, can still find enough support to share some real chemistry with us all, for free!
The best thing about you is that you know you are a genius and brilliant but still so humble and down to earth. Kudos man.
It might be interesting to have two spray bottles with the chemicals in, and then spray them in the air next to each other in a dark room. I am curious o see if it would make a glowing cloud where they meet in the air?

I absolutely love your videos. I'm not an expert of any kind in chemistry, in fact, I'm at my last year in high school, but I have a strong interest in chemistry and I learn so more and more everytime I watch your videos. Continue making great content it's sooo interesting :)
(+Jasmine Bédard) I’m a bit Young than you from what it sounds like (by about two or three years), but I started reading up on clandestine chemistry (because it’s really interesting and you can easily find multiple routes to an exact molecule) things online and analyzing the reactions involved, and now I’m writing my own routes based off of reactions I see and when reading try and predict the next step, and am getting better at all of that. I recommend if you want to get into chemistry you do something like that.

I've wondered this for a long time: Why do glow sticks glow longer if they are kept in the freezer?
I assume it's because reactions happen more slowly at lower temperatures so the chemiluminescent reactions can continue for longer before they exhaust the reactants? That's just an educated guess though
@@rosiecairns9697 You are correct! They also glow dimmer when cold and stronger when hot, but that affects the glow-time for the reasons you described.

You made glowsticks basically from scratch. I can't even get proper velveted meat for Chinese food. Stop being awesome and so damn humble. You're making the rest of us look bad! Ya jerk.
You have to let it sit in corn starch , egg whites, baking soda and Chinese cooking wine.
Then you fry at a low simmer, only to about half to 3/4 done, if the oil is too hot the meat gets tough.
After this it’s done. Also a lot of authentic recipes will use MSG and it is also another type of meat tenderizer.

To restate:
1. Marinade meat with a mixture of corn starch, baking soda, egg whites, maybe MSG, and cooking wine. (Is there a preference for type/flavor/variety? There seem to be as many Chinese cooking wines as European cooking wines.)
2. Pan-sear to medium-rare or medium.
Wonder how Bromelain would work in place of MSG as meat tenderizer - maybe add some pineapples and call it Hawaiian velveted meat?

Almost had a breakdown when you showed the reaction mechanism. Just took my organic 2 final and had to learn like a hundred reaction mechanisms. It was not fun. I cried a lot this semester. I even contemplated dropping out of college. It was a nightmare.

And anyway, like I said, it was hyperbole. I know I didn't literally learn 100 mechanisms. It just felt that way.
Sort of reminds me of my chemistry lessons. The teacher literally just takes a random text from the internet that even remotely is about chemistry (last thing he chose was a scanning tunnel microscope text excerpt because haha you can see atoms, wow) and turns it into a concentration practice where you have to separate the words, and throws shit around and screams when you have a spelling error. Thank you, my class mates now know how to construct that microscope, but if I'd mention the period system, the girls would call me a pervert because they'd think I was talking about periods.

We did a chemiluminescence lab in ochem lab. Took like 2.5 hours for a 5 second reaction hahah
And the real kicker is that 2.4 hour lab theory they taught... they dont even know if it's correct!
@Dgstowe Meh... The luminol we use was really really old. Even with the lights off I couldn't see it nor could most of the class. I think those that even saw it were probably imagining it.

Just read tikal and Pikal they are available online and have step by step instructions on MDMA production. Although the precursors are hard to get, specifically safrole or sassafras. I used to purchase it in make your own rootbeet kits however its dirty and expensive.

When we were using them extensively in the Army in the 80's -- calling them "chem sticks" -- I never realized how recent of a marvelous invention they were. The patent for the design with the glass inside was only issued in 1976. These must have contributed a terrible toxicity to the landfills after being used.
Modern ones are non toxic. Not sure about the old ones tho

Can you make a glow stick with quantum dots? So create a reaction that emits UV, the quantum dots absorb it, and emit a controlled color. Could be a cool video demonstrating quantum dots.

Hey man, love your videos. The black background has given me an idea. Can you please make a video on the chemistry behind new black paints, such as Surrey Nanosystems' Vantablack, or Black 2.0? Black 2.0 can be purchased easily from the website of the artist, Stuart Semple. You could even try to paint things with it, such as the background, whilst amking comparisons. Stuart has a video saying something about the large spacing of the base allowing for more pigment to be added, so I would be very interested to know more about that.

There's an interesting back story to Stuart making Black 2.0 in that he requested the assistance of chemists to spite the artist Anish Kapoor- who was granted permission by Surrey Nanosystems to be the sole artist who can use Vantablack. Interestingly, under the T&C's of using Black 2.0, Stuart explicitly stated that through its purchase, an agreement is made to NOT give it to Anish.

So does it actually deteriorate over time eventually causing it to no longer work? Or would it glow again every time you shake it?
I was wondering what might happen if you had a glow stick that had a powder that was magnetic (like iron) inside, then a small magnet on each end of the stick so that the magnetic fields are overlapping slightly, would it cause the liquid to constantly stir (be excited) or would the powder just settle between the two magnetic fields?
Disregarding the whole magnetic stirring of liquids, let alone doing so with no additional energy ad infinitum.. the excited molecule comes into being from the remains of a broken down TCPO molecule. Shaking is not what excites it, it's a part of the chemical reaction where TCPO is all used up after breaking the vile. Shaking merely makes the reaction happen faster.
It's *sort of* like stirring in sugar to make a drink sweeter. Stirring helps it dissolve so it doesn't pile up at the bottom for ten minutes. Stirring for an hour wont make it any sweeter
