    I absolutely love mine, especially paired with my d800. I researched for many days and it came down to the Nikon 14-24 and this Tamron, and I'm so glad the tamron is now living in my bag!

    I just got the Tamron 15-30mm f2.8 and love it. I used it extensively in Leipzig and Dresden, Germany, this past week. Wish I could post a few pics here. The lens is heavy, but performed very well.

    Hi Darren, it's taken a while to find on you here and may I say what a refreshing, objective, informative presentation. Many presenters here on youtube seem to want to rely on THEMSELVES as the product. Don't you dare get an Afro hairstyle, tattoos, say 'what's up' at every opening and, god forbid, wear a baseball cap back to front. You're now on my 'Reference' list.
    Thanks.
    PS; bought the lens, fabulous results, really pleased.

    I have to say I love the way you did your review. Clear, simple to understand, and you divide it into segments and also provide sample pics. It's everything I would have hoped for in a review. Keep it up, and yeah I'm definitely subscribing :)

    Darren if I am not mistaken the canon lenses have the zoom and focus rings in opposite positions as Nikon lenses so the Tamron will be the same as the Canons.

    Great review Darren! One quick note is that this lens also has very minimal distortion (ie almost none), and although the Nikon 14-24 is wider initially once you correct distortion it's nearly the same view as Tammy 15-30. Add in the extended range in the back end and this is a must own for Nikon shooters. Cheers!

    Im very excited about tamron lenses. I got a 28-75mm 2.8 and a new 70-200mm 2.8 vr (AMAZING LENS). I need something wider, and Im considering this lens to use.

    This lens is on my list to pick up.. it really does look like a solid Lens.. I can't wait to get my hands on one.
    I love Wide angles like this because it does give a creative distortion at the wider end if you wanted to use it.
    real estate photography is something I want to start doing and I am thinking of really working primarily with that as opposed to portraiture.

    Can't wait to get this lens, it receives such amazing feedback everywhere. The 15-30 will be the finishing lens for my Tamron SP Holy Trinity, because I already own the 24-70 VC (very good) and the 70-200 VC (holy sh*t level), using both for work, and I am extremely satisfied.
    I just hope it will have the same level of build quality as the 70-200.

    Darren great video and images, as usual, I just bought a used copy of this lens today, upgrading from the Tokina 16-28 and the lens flare is greatly reduced. This is an excellent lens. Darren, I would love to see you review the G2 version of this lens.

  • @tombic6373
    @tombic6373 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excellent comprehensive review which nonetheless leaves one issue unresolved: you are unable to give it your editor choice award because of the question of whether the Tamron lens is weather sealed. I see on the Tamron website the following statement: "Moisture-resistant construction helps prevent moisture from penetrating the lens." Does that statement suffice for you to make it an editor's choice?
    I am trying to decide between the two lenses and your reviews on the Tamron and Nikkor 14-24 are very helpful. If you still are concerned about the question of weather protection, what steps should be taken by users to protect the Tamron? Thank you.

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tom Bic It does - it's very strange because the BH Photo site doesn't mention this fact (Moisture Resistant construction) as it does for the other two lenses (the 24-70 VC and the 70-200 VC) - but the Tamron website does make this claim - grrrr... Anyway, if the Manufacturer says it's moisture resistant, then YES, it should get the editor's choice award.

    Hello Darren, thank you for the information on this video. I have had the opportunity to shoot real estate in the past 6 months and i recently got myself a tamron 15-30 to work with. Anyway. I saw your real estate photographies and i was amazed by the sharpness and the well exposed light that you have on the exterior !!! I have also notice that your usually turn the lights on the rooms that you shoot but my question is, do you use an additional light and external light? Thanks for your answer and i hope we will have the opportunity to talk more about this subject. Sorry for my poor english. Bye !!!

    Great review as always! However, I would argue that fast focusing is important on a wide angle zoom as well, in the category of event/photojournalist/wedding photographers that is. I had the Canon 16-35L II and I sold it because the Tamron is simply a better lens, besides weight, bulbous front element, and ergonomics (I prefer the slimmer Canon).

      +Eric McFarland I had the 24-70 for awhile and it wasn't all that accurate in the AF department, I sent it back, open to trying again - for video it's a different story, the VC works really well. Open to looking at the 70-200 from Tamron. Thank you for the kind words!

    Hi Darren, enjoying your reviews and great real estate pics. So, the Tamron 15-30mm beats the Nikon 14-24mm *except* for true weather-sealing and 1mm difference. Still procrastinating over which to get. The VC on the Tamron means you can walk around town and get some wider architecture shots handheld in lower light but the Nikon can be taken out on rainy/snowy trips without worry....

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Terry Newman Turns out the Tamron is in fact weather resistant - given that, if you can live with the 1mm less wide on the wide end, then I see no reason not to get the Tamron...

    Nice review, as always. But for landscape the lens is not ideal due to the bulbus front. It means a traditional filter cannot be attached. Apparently you can get a special type of filter, but it is not cheap. I think a mark needs to be deducted from your scoring system for that reason.

    Hey Darren, really appreciate this review. I'm about to get a new setup and I'm also a professional Real Estate Photographer. Currently shooting with the Nikon D800E and the Nikkor 24-70 2.8. It's been between the Nikon D850 and the Sony A7RIII. While I like some of the additional features in the Sony, most of them I won't use. I love the way the Nikon feels and works. Was thinking about the newer Nikkor 16-35 but glad I came across this lens. It gets really good reviews and rankings on DXOMark and Optical Limits. I'm about 90% certain this and the D850 will be my new set up for my Real Estate work. Anything else I should know before I get it?

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don’t mind me saying so, I wouldn’t go for the D850 or the a 7R Mark III for real estate. I would go for either the Nikon D750 or the Sony A7 Mark 3. The reason why I suggest that is if you do any outsourcing for post production 75 and 80 MB files - specially if you do a lot of them - can take a while even with a fast connection. In my experience high megapixel cameras slow down my workflow and my results have not been noticeably better with higher megapixel cameras. Just my Opinion. Get a D750 or an A73...

    • @deanholtzphotography
      @deanholtzphotography 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for the suggestion, although I'm working with a D800E right now, which is 36 MP and with my workflow ( RAW files initially treated and converted to jpg in ACR, Exposure Blending in Photomatix and final touch ups back in Photoshop ), the only thing that might speed up my workflow is the jpeg rendering. But I usually do something else while that is happening, so at this point, I don't find it an issue. I do create videos and use my camera for the odd portrait shoot and a couple of weddings a year, so I am considering it's capabilities for other projects. At this point, I'm not interested in outsourcing my production because where I live, I can not charge enough to afford paying someone else to edit my photos. Besides, I have my own technique to get my "look". Average home here is worth $280K, and no home here is worth over $3 Mil. So not a lot of high end properties where we can make higher revenue. I appreciate the Sony's tech and features, but I'm already invested in Nikon mount glass and far prefer the Nikon's feel, handling, ergonomics, menu layout and back screen.

    Trying to decide whether to keep my wonderful Sigma 20mm F/1.4 or get this for versatility. While F/1.4 is usually pretty useless for landscape, I've been able to do some awesome astrophotography shots with it even wide open so it's a tough call.

    • @emptyskullify
      @emptyskullify 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have been considering the 20mm f1.4 for over a year because of its super wide aperture. But given the price and versatility compared to the Tamron, I might get the Tamron instead :) What are your thoughts of the sigma? do you have any sample images?

    • @sigmaoctantis_nz
      @sigmaoctantis_nz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      emptyskullify It's a bit soft in the corners at wide apertures but I was able to use the shots still for astro stitches because they require overlap anyway. I think the cleaner edges of the Tamron would be better but you are losing 2 stops of light. These were both shot at f/1.4.

      @@DarrenMiles Hey Darren, thanks! I sold my 14-24mm about 2 years' ago as I wasn't going as UW as I used to, (swapping it for a 24mm 1.4G which I love), that said, I wish to go a bit wider for the milky way and my trips to Skye in Scotland which is only a few hours drive from me. Tamron is a contender here still deciding over that or the sigma 14-24, or just going for the 14mm 1.8 art!

    • @stevenrobinsonpictures
      @stevenrobinsonpictures 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went with the Tamron G2. I mean it's cheaper, sharper, less FC, better sunstars, longer range, flares less in daylight. Win! What I found out today was that Tamron licence nikon's mount. So they get the better AF> Sigma on the other hand apparently reverse engineers the mount AF protocols, which explains to me why the AF for sigma lenses is often said to be screwy, and could be ruined by any FW update to a nikon body.

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tomato, to-MAH-to - biggest differences are in the apertures, if you need low light capability - get the Tamron, if you spend most days shooting, get the 16-35 f/4. Both are optically EXCELLENT!

  • @Ulala88
    @Ulala88 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great review just like other lens reviews you made. Thank you.
    Question: would you consider this tamron 15-30 f2.8 or the tokina 16-28 f2.8. To me, the tokina is lighter and cheaper (half price of the tamron) which means I can add in another rokinon 12mm f2.8 fish eye for even cheaper price than the tamron. The tamron is wider and longer and receive a LOT of praise from many people. I'm not sure about image quality since I do not own neither. What is your suggestion? Does the image quality in the tamron worth the upgrade from the tokina? Thanks

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is one very specific area where the Tamron is the clear winner - and that is flare performance and performance against bright light in general. The Tamron is clearly a superior lens, but the Tokina remains an excellent value, just the same. I think I would spring for the Tamron...

      Thank you. What is your thought on the sigma 12-24 f4.5-f5.6? There is another sigma 12-24 f4 as well. They are very wide and quite light. Price is roughly the same for the f4 but much cheaper for the f4.5-f5.6.

    so between this, the sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 and the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8, which one would you choose (photo quality wise)?

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Sétian That is a tough choice, I’m assuming you are a Canon shooter, probably a tossup between the Sigma and the Tamron. For real estate photography, I actually feel like the canon 16 - 35 F/4 is the best of the bunch because the bulk of what I shoot in real estate is at f/8 - and the f/4 is so much lighter and the image quality is just awesome.

    I'm trying to find an objective review of the second iteration of this lens - the G2. I'm considering it.
    It claims improved weather sealing and even better optics as well as coatings, which, apart from weather sealing, you claim here are exceptional already, so I'm really curious if you had a chance to play with the G2 and are you considering reviewing it?

      Just because of the way I shoot, I’d likely get the 15-30...

    • @MindzEyz
      @MindzEyz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get it. I've owned the 15-30 since before its launch. I like it quite a bit. I'm now doing more video, and at least with the 35, I'd be able to use ND filters in high-light video , gain better background blur ability, and the 1.4 may help with low-light capability. I'm wondering if the 20mm may have less distortion as well. I'm torn. Thanks so much for your feedback.
      On another note, I'd really like to see a video review of the Sigma 105mm Art and a possible comparison with the 135... if we are to be spoiled. Much love. Thanks!

    Looks nice, wish tamron would release a dock like sigma did to update firmware and adjust the focusing plane.
    ps
    Don't you have some compact lights you can use while traveling? The Ultra high ISO and sitting too close to the camera made it hard to keep watching (drapes were in focus you weren't)
    Looking forward to the next reviews!

      Appreciate the feedback, I made a decision to bring a motorized slider with me and that took up most of my cargo space, and I initially wasn't going to do the whole review in the hotel room but decided to do it while I was there at the last minute hence why the lighting is definitely off on this one... The Tamron has weather-sealing. Others have even tested it, there are numerous references to weather-sealing, even from Tamron.
    Other than that, the video is kind of creepy.
