    Sullivan’s “Macbeth “ is probably the best of his concert overtures. It bubbles up today as fresh as it did for Henry Irving.

    Thank you for this. More Midsummer Night's Dream than the Scottish Play. But very pleasant

      That's the trouble. Apart from the Porter which I've played it's not meant to be pleasant. I may not do the Scottis accent next time as I found out from Mont Orgueil in Jersey doormen can be upper middle class. The spirits in the overture sound like fairies and the weird sisters (following Boito and Verdi, a chorus rather than a trio) seem more like friendly gossips!

    I don't think there are any Shakespeare scores by Sullivan I haven't enjoyed, "Macbeth" being no exception. The Overture alone would make the price of admission to a production worthwhile. A lovely performance here by the RTE musicians.
