Changing it up the way you did made it fresh and unique in a way that otherwise may not have been able to be accomplished or conveyed regarding the back story. The way it was revealed towards the middle to end of the movie, with the scene in the morgue, was crucial. It tied everything together perfectly. You felt like, ok, now I get it!
The end result was PERFECTION. Far better than Flashdance, Poltergeist and any other ninja movie.
