  • Could Altered be THE next big trading card game? It hit Kickstarter recently, and hit $1.2M in its first day! We love the artwork. We love the design team. And we're floored by what this game is doing differently than any other TCG to date!

Instead of a blatant QR Code - they should've found a way to a thematic icon like a shield or whatever with an embedded QR Code that's more discreet and thematic. I don't know if that's possible but anything better than bland QR code that sticks out on a pretty art card

I think they're using the campaign, and the road tour to help grow some of that support. Plus, I believe that Asmodee will be distributing the game, so they're certainly tied in closely with the FLGS network.

      That sounds bad..
Can someone just print A card to death? There has to be a limit!
Also doesn't this affect trades as well (people can't play in tournaments if they have a card but don't .. own it?). If so, this cannot be called a TCG..
The more I think about this system, the less I like it. And the less likely it will be for other companies to adopt it.

      From what i understood .
You can print limitless exept some promo card which you can print only one time per year .
Printing card will cost you money so well the point to print A card to deaths is pretty limited and what will be the point anyway ?
      Upside
-If you play a card in differents deck you just need 3 ownership and can print more card to have 3 in each deck instead of switch them from deck to deck .
      - you lost or destroy a card for what ever reason you can just reprint it .
      - You can for exemple print a unique and give it to friends if he want to play for fun with it .
      Downside :
-The only one i see is physical Card will have less value since they are all "proxy" .
You can give for free ownership to someone . So trade is totally doable .
Both trader give ownership of their card for free . They give each other the physical card . Trade done .

    • @atla_
      @atla_ 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

This is the issue i see as well, while for players that might be great (e.g. like Lorcana reprints) i fear there is not much collectibility around this game. The art looks fantastic and the card styles as well - but aside of the Foilers you probably do not need to look for anything. Because as soon as you have one card you can order copies of it. Also as foilers are not transferrable foil cards have zero value to other players. To me the biggest red flag is that everything is controlled by the company behind the game and you cant sell your cards on ebay or tcgplayer/cardmarket. I give them the benefit of the doubt but i have a bad feeling they want to cash in if the second market actually does explode.
Still on the fence on this one. While i think the game loop is really novel you might find not other players near you.

I've never seen a card game like this! It features a "brand new and fresh universe" with "original gameplay" where "we aspire to craft a vibrant, inclusive and decidedly positive world". Just give me a moment to swallow my vomit. There, better. And of course the features of this platform can never be exploited for profit to the detriment of the consumer, who has been gifted the convenience of a QR code for each card to micromanage their growing collection and interact with the secondary player market where card values are totally transparent and reasonable. "The game is designed to offer you non-stop decision-making...", which for me includes avoiding this dung pile like Ebola.

I took a brief look but it's a meh from me. Gameplay looks kinda meh to me (the last "low-conflict" card game I tried was much the worse for it), art doesn't appeal to me.
Rarity system is interesting but...feels kinda lazy? Also feels like it would just exacerbate the common TCG/CCG issue of being overwhelmed with duplicate singles after opening a box.
The digital ownership aspect seems gimmicky has hell, an evolution on the NFT nonsense that was so hot in 2022.
Also...QR codes on every card. That's fugly as hell.
Honestly, this game does not seem like it should be a TCG/CCG. The print-on-demand aspect is cute but I imagine it will do bad things to the collectability aspect of it being a TCG/CCG and that is a serious problem. As much as some people might not like to hear it, a TCG/CCG needs to balance gameplay AND collectability. Print-on-demand seems like it would essentially destroy the collectability aspect entirely which will make the whole thing a fail in that regard. Feels like this game should be a ECG/LCG but it was redone as a TCG/CCG to hop on the current hype-train around those.
I'll stick to Grand Archive, thanks 🙂
EDIT: On a side note, you ramnblings at the end on the topic of collectability were not helpful. The Lorcana example in particular was bad because the price of Lorcana boxes dropped massively after Ravensburger did what they said they would and re-printed the hell out of it. I would caution you guys against offering "investment" advice, there are actual legal things around that kind of thing....

@@AdamJorgensen Agreed. Every point you made... like the TCG space isn't new. Its like they saw the lessons learned in the past and just chose to ignore all of them. You need all 3 player types for a TCG to have legs... I'm not sure competitive players or collectors are gonna see this game as viable. And that's without getting into the honestly small card pool (given you have to cut it in half due to the janky rarity system) and single affiliation decks. The meta here looking at the card list does not look very diverse either.

Honestly this is one of the best kickstarter project I've ever seen. There is a great effort in the balancement of the factions, the world, the merchandising products and the game concept, the rarity system introduction helps to create a balanced tournament system. The gameplay is very innovative and skill testing because you have to make a lot of decision-making both in aggro, mid and control strategies and this is one of the aspects i love the most. There isn't an auto-pilot deck, but you have to spend wisely your resources and make sure not to waste them.

    Nah, I don't think so.
While interesting, the gimmicky of printing cards is only for the countries where this is accessible and the shipping is a non-issue. The gameplay isn't really that innovative (aside from rarity, which is a DIFFERENT card with same art). I've seen movement in CCGs before (Decipher's Lord of the Rings), the mana system has been done to death, and even the "fleeting" characters were used with the Fate mechanic in Legend of the Five Rings. The rest (from what I've seen) is nothing special.

Altered seems like it would do well digitally. The problem with physical TCGs is you immediate make the game inaccessible to millions purely down to either those players not having a local game store where you're able to meet and play with people, or the fact they don't want to commute to these events to play.
Digital is far more convenient, allows balancing options and is accessible to everyone. I can't imagine many, if any, TCGs really sticking around for long if they don't adopt a digital approach.

The game is *very* good. Perhaps "for a ccg" should be added in this context, but yeah. And playing a little gives people context for what the rarity system means. Given that some truly amazing games have been CCGs I don't think that tag is necessary. There are plenty of valid complaints one can level at CCGs around the distribution model but in terms of gameplay the "genre" has some truly stellar games.
That said, if the game is actually good that's great but...the KS page does not do a good job of telling me much about the gameplay at all.
Personally, I am rather dubious when it comes to "low-conflict" games because the last "low-conflict" card game I played (An ECG called Mage Noir) turned out to be incredibly boring and part of that was due to the removal of creature combat in the game leaving an interaction vacuum in the game.
I get that some people want to have their 1v1 cake and eat it (by somehow reducing conflict) but I think it's tricky to find a balance with this because conflict is pretty much the key driver of interaction in most 1v1 games and finding a replacement for it that doesn't result in a multiplayer solitaire game is not easy...

I'm really excited for this game, it's got a lot of great concepts functionally in the game and the product. I also really enjoy the lack of gore/grotesque imagery without being completely for kids.

Your raving about the fact that you can get “any card “ as a common is simply not true. It’s only true if you define a card by its name. Otherwise, the rare version will have different stats, which makes it a different card. I found your raving about this to be a little disingenuous, and it made me question your judgment, or your financial interest.

What Ryan was getting at, is that he's never seen another TCG that treats the card progression system like that. We completely understand that there are stats differences between the cards and their rarity. We even discuss that in the video. I think his enthusiasm on that front is based on just how different it feels to him.
We're enthusiastic about games in general, and also innovation. I can assure you that we are genuine in our thoughts and feelings for the games we play. And we have ZERO financial interest in the game. We both backed like anyone else, and received nothing for covering it.

@@meeple Thanks for the reply. To be clear about what I am talking about - You said that you can get "any card" at a common level of rarity. You can NOT get "any card" at common rarity. You get *better* cards at higher rarities but the publisher has decided to give them the same name. This is nothing but a cheap marketing ploy and I am surprised you took the bait. Also, to be clear, I backed at the $500 level of the game. I am excited about the true innovation (the digital registry of cards, the safe trade via their app, the print on demand, the foilers, etc. ), but I recognize how they make money. I don't need hype or spin!
I don't question your sincerity and I believe you when you say that you aren't receiving money from the publisher. I am just kind of amazed that you are so easily excited about something as mundane as "the worst version of every named card will be all available at common rarity but better ones with the same name will be more rare" that you see this as a good thing. This is nothing new to TCGs. The better cards are usually rarer so they can make more money from people chasing the power cards. The proper statement from you should have been something like "They CLAIM all cards are available at common rarity, but all they are doing is giving different-but-similar cards the same name. They aren't doing anything new re: having the better cards be rarer." That you instead hyped this as innovative made me skeptical of your motives. I watch a lot of your content but my first thought was "Are you so easily fooled these smoke and mirror distractions from their marketing team?" I want my reviewers to be reviewers with MY interest in mind, not their gullibility or excitement in mind.
It seems you are now saying that you got so excited about having the worst version of all named cards available at common rarity that you misspoke? To that I must say, "You do multiple takes of your segments, yes? You edit your videos, yes? You chose to leave this statement in, yes?" That may be a bit harsh, but I think it needs to be said snice I am a fan I am am giving feedback in the hopes you will do better.
In the end, this is a bit of a big to-do over almost nothing, but it was so shocking to hear you pitch this that I felt I had to speak up. Keep up the great work, but please try to be a bit more skeptical and critical of the hype.

To be fair, cards are to some extent defined by name since you can only have three of the same named card across all rarities and deck building limits the amount of rares you are allowed to play. So playing a deck full of rares is illegal and you need to decide if a given card is better at rare or common for the deck you are making. Some of the faction shifted rares for instance are identical to their common version, just faction shifted.

      @grahamers 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@tehbige73 your point about the limit on rares is a very good one. At most, only 15 out of 40 (~37%) of your cards may be rare or unique. This does obviate some of my concerns. That said, my main point stands: a rare version of Card X will be better than a common version of Card X. They are different cards and it will cost you some amount to chase the rare version.
      Thanks!

Is there some Blockchain nonsense going on with this game? It sounds suspiciously like you're buying NFTs.

The digital aspect does give that vibe, but I really do think this is just a clever solution to address some of the challenges that are typical for a TCG gamer. At the end of the day, it's still starters and boosters that you can buy and play with. The digital tool seems to just make your ownership feel a bit more secure, and allow people to get multiples of cards quite a bit more easily.

From the FAQ : "No, we do not use any NFT technology, particularly because we know how badly gamers perceive them (and us too). Instead we decided to go the old and classic way. We will host all the data of the app on our secured servers, as any other persistent service offer."

I got the rules from the KS but haven’t read them yet. Each video/graphic shows turning over a card and the higher stats wins and move your token forward one space, so war - high card wins. Two fronts to play on sure. The “spend any cards in hand as manna” but then nothing is showing in video saying what manna is used for, paying to play the card I guess. Some nuances will show up when I get to read the rules but 90% of this game is about the digital collection aspect, buy/sell, print on demand, and the foiler cards, and 5% is hey here is a game. I don’t see yet why this is worth getting for gameplay purposes but sure if it sticks rare cards and selling foilers could be a thing.
