Kayak Camping - 3 Days in True Wilderness (Arkansas)

  • We had to cut the trip short...water conditions were too brutal to cover the whole distance. The Ouachita Mountains are home to incredible rivers and streams. The region is undeveloped leaving rivers like this one in their ancient form. We spent 3 days paddling and camping! But somehow we only covered 8 miles in 3 days, savage.

    So many things impressed me about this trip. The camaraderie, The grit, but most of all the abuse that Aquabound paddle took! When people say they can’t have a composite paddle because they’re too hard on them I’m going to send them a link to this video.

    • @GatewoodBrown
      @GatewoodBrown  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Always means so much to have you watching the videos Dan! Those aquabounds are something else I tell ya. This was straight abuse and it still has tons of life left. Put this video on their kiosk at the stores you sell to haha

    • @GatewoodBrown
      @GatewoodBrown  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, Curt! Gosh isn't that the truth, more rain for sure! Ya know this one is sort of up your way but definitely a brutal paddle without tons of flow. And then it may be too technical for us haha

    • @curtclonts1529
      @curtclonts1529 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had hoped to get into some Texas Hill Country rivers this summer/early fall but the flow rates are non-existent. Hoping now for good rains this fall plus a few tropical “stir-ups” to up the ante for you Texas boys. I mean, hell, if there’s no water you can’t shoot cool video. I would hate that. I’d say a prayer for rain but am afraid the good Lord might strike me dead for past sins.
      Stay safe!

      @@curtclonts1529 yes curt I totally agree! We got some solid rain recently and it’s unlocked a particular bucket list river that I’ll be doing next month. Plus the rio grand is now rampaging, need to get out there!

    Nothing worse than getting in and out of the kayak for 6-7 miles on the river. I floated the last section of Crooked Creek from the Lower Access to the White River a couple years back with my dad and uncle. We definetly made a memory. I will never forget how good the water on the White felt and how good the Breadeax Pizza was that night in Yellville! A few days on the river will really make you appreciate all the comforts we have in our modern world.

The feeling of being free paddling open water then beached on some rocks and walking through large pebbles rock bed. Getting back in the kayak to get stuck again. But looking back it was very rewarding and i will never forget the beautiful sites and seeing a pair of bald eagles. One thing saved me was I had on a good pair of water shoes with some good grip. Brother what a good trip with your buddies. I know the kayaking part was a little tough but you all hung in there and made the trip happen. You had some nice camping area. I know everyone's feet enjoyed being relaxed at the at the campsite. With all the portishing that you had to do I know my feet would have taken a beating from that cuz I still have pains in my feet time to time from when both of my feet was broken in the truck 🚛 accident. I just did a 40 mile kayak camping trip with my family and family friends over the Labor Day Holiday. What was more exciting is that my lil brother transferred back home with his job & he went kayak camping with us on this trip & it was his first time kayaking and kayak camping. He really really enjoyed it and he now wants to buy a kayak so he can join us on kayak camping Adventures. I'm really close with my lil brother and I haven't seen him in 2 years since the pandemic has started. He sad that he left Texas but he's also happy that he moved back home close to family and has a new activity that he loves. I will share your Channel with my lil brother cuz I know he will love your Channel since he likes kayaking now. I am so glad that he likes kayaking cuz I want to take him on so many kayak trips. Good video brother thank you for sharing.

      @@GatewoodBrown yeah, it's was only a 5-6 hour drive from where we used to live. The trail itself is insane. 27 miles I think? The brutal thing is that it's an old postal road where they carried mail into the boonies -- was originally used by horses and pulled carts from what I've read and unlike most purpose built hiking trails, there's almost no switchbacks. It's straight up and down the mountain sides. First time I hiked it I was basically rock crawling up a mountain with a 35-40 lb pack wondering what I'd gotten myself into. 😂

I'm hoping this Fall and Spring bring more fortunate kayaking times. Nevertheless, it still looks like a great trip albeit a bit of a travel from Houston for such low water... But I get why you went. More likely to find water there than in this state at the moment.
