Math is the one subject I feel so unprepared to teach, but you break it down so wonderfully. I love the resources you provide as well. Thank you so much Tina.

I am starting my second year in 4th grade and now have a better idea of how to teach the math since I did see it all last year. This video is incredibly helpful. I am going to order those books ASAP. I would love to see how you plan like this for division, fractions, etc. Thanks so much for the help Tina!

For the 900-468, I was taught to "borrow from the neighbor". First, you see that you cannot take 8 away from 0. So then the 0 "goes to his neighbor" and borrows. But the second number in 900 is also a 0 so he has to then "borrow from his neighbor" (9) and the nine becomes 8 (because the 0 in the tens place borrowed from him) Now that the 0 in the tens place borrowed from the 9, he can help the 0 in the ones place. When the zero in the tens place borrowed from the 9, he became ten. But when he helps the 0 in the ones place, he becomes a nine. Once the 0 in the tens place (now 9) helps the 0 in the ones place, he becomes a 10. So now you can solve the problem easily because you can subtract 8 from 10.
10-8=2 9-6=3 8-4=4 So your answer would be 432. I was taught this method in elementary school and to this day I use it. It always stuck with me. I hope this helps in some way. You are a phenomenal teacher and I hope to be just like you one day!

Loved your video. I don't have EDM for a curriculum, but have not been happy with our very old curriculum and have wanted to really supplement. Your book suggestions are very expensive though. But, Hurray!!! I won a $50 Amazon gift certificate from Scholastic and spent it on the $60 Number Talk book. I have been drooling over that book since I watched our video a week ago. What good timing. I also ordered the other CC book and I have the Modeled drawing book. Now I can get my planning started following your great modeling. Thank you so much!

Glad you were able to get the books. I was shocked at how expensive Math Talks was, but I knew I wanted it to be part of my next school year and I knew my district would never buy it for me so I bit the bullet and bought it myself. I have no regrets though. The book really is great.

I'm starting my first year of teaching and will be in 4th grade as well. This was really helpful! I got some great ideas on how to supplement the math curriculum. I absolutely love number talks, but I will definitely consider ordering those other books as well. Thanks for the tips!

Hi Tina. Could you please make and share a video about what you do the first day/week back of school? How do you balance the academic/social? I have seen all your videos including setting up a safe classroom environment and some read alouds, but what other activities do you do to bond as a class? I love your videos, you are such an inspiration!

I wish i would have known about these books last school year. They struggled so much with rounding. I just ordered all 3 and 2 more :) so excited. Thank you for this video.

Loved this video, as I am preparing to teach 4th this upcoming school year this helps. I am a literacy teacher at heart, so math has been one that sort of takes a back seat. However, while watching your video I ordered the common core math in action and will be studying this book. Thanks so much for sharing.

Your students are very blessed to have a teacher like you. Many students don't have teachers that will accommodate lessons for all learners. Especially that you take time out of your day to study all the materials. Thank you for these videos! :)

The manipulative book is awesome I never now how to integrate manipulative for older primary. Most teachers and schools I have been to just don't use any!! Thank you so much Tina I truly love your teaching videos!! ❤️❤️

    Tina....
    Thank you for this video!!
This will be my second year teaching 5th grade Math ... and for the life of me I just could grasp what the kiddos were missing.
Following your lead, from a video you posted earlier this summer, I did try Number Talks with the same group of kiddos (Summer School / ESL/ SpED kiddos) and oooohhhh what a difference it makes!! To get the kids to actually multiply & divide, whole number AND decimals... MENTALLY, I think I scared them because I was so excited for them!!!
I've purchased some of the resource books that you recommended. I will be mapping out my first few weeks of lessons in the next week or so.
Thank you for sharing this Tina!! Super helpful video!!
    xo

This was awesome... I would love to see other subjects especially social studies and science. I taught only Reading and Writing to 4th graders for years and starting September I'll be teaching all the subjects so I'm feeling rusty! Any help you offer would be appreciated. And more vlogs too would be awesome. You're videos are fantastic!☺️

This was really helpful. I'm so intrigued by other teachers' processes of lesson planning. I'd die to get my hands on that number talks book! I might have to cave and order it. I found your intro and build up to the concepts extremely helpful. Thank you!

Also, with the step by step book, what grades does it target? I am checking it out on Amazon and it mentions things like multiplication, decimals and percentages..I teach first, will there be anything grade specific to first? The bars you demonstrated was helpful and something I can use, but not sure if purchasing the entire book would be worth it. Thanks!

    • @tinabietler
      @tinabietler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

The Step by Step book probably isn't appropriate for first grade, but you could very easily copy the methd of teaching them right from the start to draw a box and label it for their simple number stories. I taught first grade for 8 years. It would be easy to teach them with problems like 4+2, and 14-3.

The problem with that is my district is getting a new program that we are being forced to use. I haven't even been trained in it yet so I don't know what my ELA lesson plans are going to look like myself.

Thank you for this great video.just wondering...how do you take up student daily work? Do you have kids check their own work or do you mark certain questions or do you give a test to check in? I find that the minds on questions can take a big chunk of time, even if you've planned for a Five minute lesson! I bought one of the resources that you recommended (Singapore way). Also, like you, I like to plan on paper...old school! Thanks again for the inspiration!
