    What a glorious sound it really takes me back. I had one of these back in the 70s - the most enjoyable bike I’ve ever owned!

      I seem to recall that Triumph called that colour "Cherokee Red", The 1976 T140V was also painted in that colour scheme.

    Back in the 1980s I was a mechanic at a Norton, Triumph & BMW dealer. I did a lot of British bike work and I did an amazing amount of work on Triumph T150s and T160s. My honest assessment is that they were built poorly from what was often sub-standard parts and castings. When built right, with care and attention to detail, they are and were wonderful bikes. For those of you that have never experienced a Triumph (or BSA) triple you are missing a real treat. The engine is smooth and pulls hard from just off idle. It has a throaty growl like nothing else. The bike is heavy and kind of a hand full in a parking lot but pure joy out on a twisty road. The T160 has the bigger tank which is what you want because the three cylinder is rather thirsty. The seat, on a T160, is washboard hard.

    Sweet memories, I owned and rode a Triumph Tiger 650 and was just about to chop it in against the new T160 triple when I met my future wife! Say no more, the new bike went on hold and of course I never got to own one. We're still happily married but I always regret not buying one. I've always had a bike and still riding but the T160 was my dream bike.
    Keep up these lovely videos 😊👍

    Mike,
    I have probably watched every video you posted so far, but as the owner of a 100% original 2,400 mile T160, this video got my attention immediately. What a beautiful motorcycle. Original Cherokee Red paint on a Trident is very, very rare. They faded to purple/pink after just a few years of exposure to UV. That is the optional big tank BTW, which originally came with a vinyl white stripe down the center. These bikes are thirsty so the optional tank was a wise choice. More videos of this bike please!!!

    • @TheMightyGarage
      @TheMightyGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, many thanks for your great comment and note about the tank. I didn't realize it was an optional tank. I'm hoping to see more of this bike when the weather improves and also get a few more triples together. There aren't too many in the area. Geoff and I counted perhaps a dozen, so it would be wonderful to have a "triples day" event in the new year. Best wishes, Mike

    • @davidgill2592
      @davidgill2592 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Back in '75, here in the UK, mine had the wide tank as standard - and you needed it! If I plodded around steadily it would return about 35 miles per UK gallon, but if I absolutely wrung it's neck it would do about 33 mpg. So it was a case of no contest, why spoil the fun for a measly 2 mpg. 😆 That sound took me right back to the seventies, it sounds beautiful and even on all 3 cylinders.😍

    I remember seeing Tridents racing at Pukekohe when I was a kid in the early '70s . They sounded great , either in production races or the beautiful Rob North replicas that a couple of guys had . Those baffleless 3 into 1 exhausts sounded great on full song , going down the pit straight at about 130 mph .

    I had one new in '77 or '78. It was the T160v for export to the Saudi market and available as one of the last in the UK. I loved it. Temperamental as hell but better once I'd fitted a Lucas RITA electronic ignition system. Never did stop replacing clutches though.... happy days.

    The T160 with the bigger tank was the best of the range. The thing that people do not realize is how unlike a Japanese multi the Trident sounds. It sounds a bit like a small tractor engine and they actually run very well when sorted correctly.

    I Had my T160 out yesterday for a 40 mile ride here in New Zealand. Tridents are great bikes. They have to be revved to get the best out of them. Mine has a factory choke. Anyway, great to see the enjoyment in Geoff's eyes as he works on his bike... and hooning up and down the road. It is a beautiful place that you live.

    With the oil cooler, triples are notorious for taking a long time to warm up. I never ride mine hard until after about 10 miles. IMHO the best sounding bike ever made. Get her above 6K rpm and the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.

    Hello Mike and greetings again from Calderdale, in the early 1980's I owned a 1977 registered T160V with a Norman Hyde 871cc big bore kit, Boyer Bransden electronic ignition and a pair of up swept tulip mufflers. It was quite frankly the best handling motorcycle that I've ever owned it went around the Yorkshire Dales narrow twisty roads like it was on rails, yes Tridents are thirsty, I used to get 35 miles from a gallon of 4-star, my previous machine was a 1981 T140E which gave around 52 miles from a gallon of 4-star. With the extra cylinder capacity the Trident was good for around 135 mph, which is about 10 mph up on the stock 740cc capacity. The Triumph and BSA triples do sound wonderful when they are on the boil.
    The thirstiest machine that I ever owned was a 1980 Laverda 1200, I could only manage to get 27 mpg around town and 30 mpg on motorway runs from that one, I must admit it gave me lots of smiles per mile, I always ended up grinning like a Cheshire cat when I rode the Laverda. It demanded a lot of rider input to get the best from her, the hand controls were heavy and the whole plot was lofty and it carried it's weight high up with the tall sand cast motor which was a work of art. It pulled like a locomotive and the gearing was tall, it would pull to 90 mph (half way into the red zone) in first gear when riding solo, top end was 145 mph. Thanks for sharing the Trident video Mike.

      Hi David, many thanks for this great note. I really enjoyed reading it. Sorry for the delay in replying. The Laverda’s are amazing. I bet that was quite a sight to see. Hoping to see more of the trident in 2022. Hope you have a great new year. Best wishes, Mike

    My '75 T160 gave me many years of glorious performance.
    I still have it, but it's worn out.
    I think I rebuilt the top end 3 times. Has probably 50k miles.
    hard to tell...that stupid rear drive speedo cable was always broke, lol.
    That sucker took me from OKC in Feb 77 to my Marine base in South Carolina...up and down the East coast for a couple years, back home, and even out to Tuscon before my grandfather died. Never let my down. They only made that tank for one year, and mine is rusted out on the bottom.
    Fortunetly, my '72 T100 Daytona is an everyday driver......but it aint no Trident beast.
    Good job on freshening this one up, sir. 🙂

    After an eye watering priced re-build I was advised by the very experienced technician that the camshafts suffer if the bike is run at idle for too long when cold. The advice was start the bike and immediately ride it at moderate power & RPM settings until warm, I would guess this is to get the crankshaft spinning and distributing oil around the crankcases and cams………..I hope you guys enjoy your T160 as much as I enjoy mine.

    It sounds so nice! Begins to beautifully howl at upper revs, might be causing some hooliganism... That's why I love the triple Laverda's. But the engine seems to be a very well balanced, a usable engine with good torque from idle. A good streetbike.

      What a thing to have a Trident at High School.... I had an FS1E moped and just about upped it to anX7 Suzuki by the time I left, but a Trident would remain a dream for many a year more. I guess the very first production bikes might have been available in '74, John, but my guess is it's '75 that your friend had the 160, when the majority came on flow.

    The Amal concentric carb was built down to a price not up to a standard. The new premier versions address some issues, however to illustrate the point, Brian Pollitt fitted SU carbs to his two R3’s, mated to inlet manifolds cast by a friend of John Moss Robinson. The bikes were more frugal yet more powerful than with the Amal’s. Fabulous bike btw, my favourite Trident. Absolutely beautiful sound ❤️

      The standard T160 exhaust used annular silencers for US regs, they were quiet.The airbox was enlarged to quiet the intake roar also US reg, nothing to do with starter motor space, that was achieved by inclining the motor forward, still have mine new in 75 now I'm close to 70 here in aus it looks a rat though.

      Yes, they are still out there for sure! I think it's mostly because so many were exported to the US and guys tended to have them more for recreation instead of mostly for work and a main source of transportation. Best wishes, Mike

    I had one the same bought new in ‘75. Well not exactly the same as this one is a US spec, given the raised handle bars and reflectors on the side of the oil cooler neither of which mine had. That 3-1 sounds amazing.

    Don't ya hate it? all the work and you're ready to ride and the weather stinks !! I thought the T160's had folding pegs, didn't look like those do, or was that camera view ?? Very nice JOB !! I would have bought one if I could have found one for sale when they were current !!

    Hi; the stance is absolutely incredible; better than most. How was obtained? Longer rear shocks? Cut the forks springs a put a bung inside to compress?
    In my opinion the only thing out of tune are the handle grips.
    I am listening with an amplifier!

    Great video! The 3-1 pipes (My 2010 Triumph 675 STR has the Arrow 3-1) absolutely take it to the next level both in power and sound and weight saving. If the carbs were tuned with K&N air filters I'm sure more hp would be available. But isn't the engine really the BSA version? The original Trident had vertical cylinders.

    • @TheMightyGarage
      @TheMightyGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you're absolutely right. Thanks a lot for your note. Cheers, Mike

    • @sammilner3480
      @sammilner3480 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheMightyGarage . K and N filters will do nothing for horse power, Shemozzles will but only really on a tuned up motor. The 3/1 sounds great but on a stock bike , rayguns are about the best for power

      @johngreen3510 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Think you’ll find that Triumph had to go with slanted cylinders to make room for the starter motor.. just saying. All the best from Northampton UK

    • @PJD_55
      @PJD_55 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The T150 had upright cylinders, the T160 canted. I had one from new in ‘75.

      In a sense you are correct, Gwwayner, in that I think it is true to say that all of the Trident and Rocket engines were created at the BSA factory foundry and factory in Small Heath, and virtually all bikes assembled there too ( with the exception of the 69 Trident?) tho by '75 it was Triumph engineers who redesigned the engine. It certainly looked more BSA with the canted cylinder design, tho, as you say.

    • @TheMightyGarage

      Hi Derek, I'm still working on the Manxman. It's taken a backseat at the moment and it's turning into a longer project. But I'm still making some progress. I've had the seat reupholstered and I'm still experimenting with paint colors. We are getting close to a good paint match with the original blue color. Best wishes, Mike
