It's not obvious to many black metal fans but traditional heavy metal is where a lot of the greatest black metal releases stem from. Coming to traditional heavy metal is really coming home. Darkthrone is a perfect exemplification of this, having been on their years-long trip to developing a new, hard rock/heavy metal sound

This is a masterpiece, it's been years since I heard an album as fucking great as this one, there's not a single bad song the album flows so nice from one song to another,this is what I call musicshianship maturity.

I still listen to this album quite a bit. It is an excellent collection! The wife and I were fortunate enough to catch their one show in LA. My late Father had listened to this album for nearly six months daily. I have a halfass decent stereo, so he had no choice. haha He had just passed away the week of the show, and I almost did not go. I am very glad that the two of us pushed on down to that foreign land that is LA. The show was great! Best wishes to Sumerlands ans Eternal Champion!
Sorry for your dad, bro... But I share the same opinion, I've still been listening to this record over the years. Sumerlands is my fav band this new generation, it's one of the best things I've heard in recent years. The older it gets, the better it gets. Salute from Brazil!

@@tonytony3828 so, I confess that I was a little sad about Phil's departure, I've always found his voice to be the differential in the band. But I believe that Brendan's choice was very right, he has a style that reminds me at times a little of Phil, I already feel very comfortable with his voice. I'm really looking forward to the new record!

Yeah, they are a bit similar I agree. I got to see both these bands live on the same night at Resident Los Angeles. The place was packed.
I think they have the same guitar player but not sure.

I always think of Witchfinder General with this album because it has the doom metal aspects but also has hints of early 80s metal like early Ozzy material. A very well written album that i keep coming back to and a heck of a debut.
Now THIS is what I'm Tolkien about.

I was pleased to see these guys a few weeks ago in Austin with Eternal Champion and Venomous Maximus at the Baracuda. Ten Bucks! The EC singer used the lads from Sumerlands as his band. I just love catching the rising stars.
Peter Pandemonium I also was able to see them here in Los Angeles a few weeks ago with Eternal Champion and Blade Killer. Great performance.
Mr. TieFighter, we seem to frequent the same bands, albums, videos. You have excellent taste! I saw both bands, again, this past weekend at Hell's Heroes Festival in Houston (21 April 2018). Same deal. Small venue. The vocalists shared musicians although some switched instruments. Maybe they will always be a "twofer." They should be playing arenas but I'll enjoy them in intimate settings while I can. We need sophomore albums by both bands.
Absolutely fascinating and engrossing journey back to the ancient and glorious times.

I want to record this to both sides of a cassette and just flip it over until it's entirely worn out. Wow. This isn't metal for 15 year olds like a lot of metal, it's metal for older metallers who want to feel as excited about metal as they did when they were 15. Superb stuff!
They sound like Kadavar with dashes of 80s metal.
Ozzy's definitely not doing it these days. Someone's got to do it. That's exactly what these dudes are doing. Perfect vintage heavy metal sound. You have achieved this without the cheese of other NWOTHM bands. Great job 🤘🤘
Vocally reminds me of a combination of Saint (Kramer-era), Thunder Rider, and Blitzkrieg(90's).
I am in love with this band. This álbum is one of the best things that I ever heard since when I started to be a metal fan in the beginning of the 90's!

The NWOTHM group shows that you don't have to play like Yngwie to be power metal. I could see myself playing this song. It gives us hope. Also sounds like it was recorded on a cassette tape with the only effect being Audacity's Echoverb. I feel like I'm 21 and listening to Iced Earth again.

I think the reason we love it is that, although it sounds very nostalgic (70'/80' and all of that stuff, you know, Judas and Black Sabbath), on the other hand we can feel some kind of modern tone on the sound. Personally I find an Sludge touch on the guitars and vocals, it reminds me of Mastodon and Baroness. That combination's so cool.
Jose Antonio Molina Mastodon and Baroness do the 'sludge' name a disservice but I know what you're saying and don't disagree.
