    I have a question/request for you Rudy. You often bring up companies needing to care about the secondary market and individual card values and collection values and such. I was hoping you could make a video actually going into detail about how a company would do that. I'm not sure how a company would go about it and i'm very curious to learn more about it.
    As always, great video. Thanks a lot! Keep up the good work.

    • @jmwintenn
      @jmwintenn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      just a very basic way would be not to print an excess amount of cards. like anything, the less there is,the more you can get for it.
      also designing the card game so that people will want to play it for years to come insures card worth, because you created a market to sustain said cards.

    • @bdpc-dk2xb
      @bdpc-dk2xb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He kinda said it in the video, make the cards have value. Basically you have to make the game fun and interesting enough to have player base. Then you need to have rare cards that will have value. They need to be good enough to play and be desirable for people to pay a premium for, but not so crazy they completely break you game and upset your player base.
      At the same time you have to have the self control as a company to not go crazy with printing and devalue your product because you produced too many.

    • @smack311magic
      @smack311magic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Konami doesn't give two shits about the secondary market with yugioh. I have actually had a rep from konami explain that they only care about moving product and having players move on to the "next best thing" through power creep and bannings. And they reprint cards so that "everyone has access to them".

    Panini had to kill the Dragon Ball Z game because Bandai (the license holder of Dragon Ball merchandising) was releasing the Dragon Ball Super game. DBZ TCG was pretty darn good game with unique mechanics based on a successful CCG made by Upper Deck. There's such a passionate following for the game that there's an active online community that still plays the game and the original CCG it was based on.

  • @orionpax21
    @orionpax21 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    As someone who got into L5R closer to the end of the game, the biggest failure I saw was that they went through significant rules revisions basically every "block", which meant a lot of relearning/unlearning every year, older cards had functional changes due to being designed under different rules sets, etc. Trying to get everything to work properly together was a huge pain. There was a fan -made format the last couple of years that was basically L5R's answer to Modern, and would've been really great if not for all these issues.
    On top of that, AEG has shown in recent years that they really no longer have any interest in being involved in collectible/expandable, competitive games, and are happy just getting by on their re-skins of Love Letter and other, cheap, simple card and board games. Which is fine, but being around for not only L5R sinking, but also their gross mishandling of the relaunch of Doomtown (the original being my 2nd favorite game of all time), it was rough. I went from a big supporter, to having absolutely zero confidence in the company in the span of a couple of years.

    • @orionpax21
      @orionpax21 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, and L5R fell into the same trap that the majority of the TCG/CCG market has fallen into over the years. They always focus on those kinds of bigger, regional events, generally similar to Magics Grand Prix tournaments. Those are never what drives a competitive game. Its the smaller, local, usually weekly events that do, like Friday Night Magic. That's what sells product and helps hold secondary market value, not to mention it keeps your players interested and invested in the game. So many of these games don't want to put in the effort on the ground floor to build a player base, and think they can just bring people in for these bigger events. Cuz its worked so well in the past for games like VS System and World of Warcraft. Ugh.
      L5R only held on for as long as it did because of its devoted fan base from the earlier years of the game, when the company actually cared about it. I hope FFG do a decent job with it, but they have their own issues with building and supporting their games, not to mention the inherent problems with the LCG format.

      @Noinoi_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they wanted to do that, they would've already done so.

    for the ones who were asking themself what "panini" is, It's a huge italian sticker company, that used to produce stickers and albums (sold through newsstands) primarly for italian soccer league in 1960's. at the day of today, you can find something like 10 different series of stickers, from the youth's editions to adult collector editions.... just so you know ;)
    cheers from a BIG italian fan

    You should start buying up Yu-Gi-Oh then. box value is terrible. They release product up to 3 times a month. Can't even build a deck before the deck is old and dead. If not for the kids who grew up on the cartoons this game would already be dead. Not to mention the difficulty dealing with customer service and OTS.

      Dan V And YGO eclipses Magic in term of sales. Funny how that works. Hell, Yugioh Duel Links just got its work wide release only ~a month ago and is already more popular than MTGO. Not that I think Yugioh is better than magic necessarily. Rather is just goes to show how terribly incompetent Wizards has been and how Magic has been so successful despite them for the most part.

    • @vindixen358
      @vindixen358 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jon M More popular than MTGO isn't a high bar. When you have vastly superior, high-quality digital products available, namely Hearthstone, Eternal, Hex, and PTCGO, the fact that WoTC has kept the old dodo around this long just blows my mind.

    • @Luckingsworth
      @Luckingsworth 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      VinDixen That's the problem, it SHOULD be a high bar. And keep in mind I am talking about a game in developer for maybe a year or two now versus MODO which has had two decades to progress. The card game Yugioh is way more successful than the card game Magic. Not just the digital versions of the games.

    L5R was a great CCG. I remember when it was popular, I even placed top 8 at one of their versions of regionals with a Scorpion dishonor deck. I still have most of my cards for the game and it was a ton of fun to play. The game died for me when they removed/changed one of the major factions I played, the Shadowlands, for story purposes. Also I bought a little of that Tomb Raider when it was on clearance, couldnt find anyone to play unfortunately.

      I play Tomb Raider CCG too - I have a pretty good Atlantis deck made up. It's one of the few CCGs that you can play alone, so it's good for collectors who can't find a friend to teach the rules to. It also actually uses the spelunky mechanics by being a pseudo-board game where you draw cards from a level deck on the side to randomly generate a level, complete with traps, monsters and puzzles.

      I think that Duel Masters never gained traction in the us because the anime they put out for the product was fucking stupid. It was anti advertisement. I believed that WotC just didnt feel like putting up with two different card games. When they switched it over to Kaijudo they somehow managed to market it event worse. The Kaijudo anime was an extra special level of dumb. Its a shame because Duel Masters is a fantastic game in terms of balance and mechanics.

    L5R was a solid CCG, and the RPG side of the game was pretty solid too. The mechanics were a lot different and it was neat to have multiple ways to win and certain houses were better at winning in different ways. It was like a CCG where the cards you used had little 'scratch-off' circles so you could only use them once. What I heard about Dragon Ball Z not doing well is because they have many cards that can't be played. There are a lot of popular cards that required another card in order for it to be played. The problem was that other cards needed was never made and people got pissed and lost interest cause the next set and the next set didn't have those cards.

I still remember when DBZ made the biggest blunder a CCG could make which is change the back of the card and force people to play with opaque sleeves to hide the backs of the cards. All because they had to expand to GT. I could talk for hours about this game. I loved it, went to the World Champs at Gencon one year for it. Crazy! It was a great 1 vs 1 CCG back in the day. I had so much invested in it with promos and ultra rares and then it all fell apart. I still have all my decks and cards just cause it's not worth selling them for pennies of what I paid for them.

    Panini majors in sports cards and just use their cocky arrogance from making a killing on the NBA,MLB,NFL and NHL and then bring it into a world of trading card games and knowingly knowing that these genre of cards will be complete shit and hold no value at all, they fucking still sell those boxes for $70-$100, that's just total fuckin arrogance.....

      L5R was BY FAR the best multi player TCG ever made. We used to regularly have 6-8 player games which did require tweaking the rules slightly (we increased the honor required for an honor win to 40 for a typical game). This prevented the honor runners (Crane, Naga and Mantis) from getting an easy win via the Port Cash Machine (aka ATM) to buy characters for full price and still having the funds to equip them with gear.

My current Yu-Gi-Oh cards binder has lost value since I put it together back in 2008 and left it be a couple years later, but I have a single card worth $400, so they still have plenty of value.

    MLB showdown was an awesome card game. I only got to play it a handful of times cuz I only knew one kid who played it. I think some of the cards and sealed product still hold value.

    My friend and I probably spend close to $1000 on the Score Dragon Ball Z cards when we were growing up. Between the two of us and spending that much money we had 4 ultra rares. Eventually I traded him my DBZ VHS collection (which wasn't much) for our combined collection. Fast forward to our mid-twenties I sold the cards to him for $20.

    Tomb Raider is kind of fun and different... I say it plays more like a board game than a CCG. I did buy a few boxes just when the game tanked and was able to pick them up quite cheap. I even did one of my own videos on the game and was surprised how many people didn't even know it existed.

Bandai who hold the rights to DBZ are coming out with a version of IC Cardass for North America, thus Panini halted their game. It had a pretty good following some real balance issues though. Which IT was just a rehash of ScoreZ from the early 2000's

    L5R did manage to last 20 years? It was one of the 'class of 95'.
    The problem is...it was much bigger in Europe and South America than North America.
    A regionals in North America would pull 90-125 players where it was closer to 225 in South America and in and around the 425 player count in countries like France.
    I will always love L5R because at it's height (2002-2005) that game paid my rent!, Trading, selling, speculating...hell there was a card I stock piled called Stormheart; I bought them for about $25 regular $35 foil a piece but when regionals hit sold them for $80 regular and $150 to $180 a pop for foils. It was beautiful!

    Rudy, here are your answers regarding the Dragon Ball Z TCG.
    OK, so the DBZ game was a revitalization of the CCG that Score created back on the 2000's. As a seller for the Panini version on eBay, here's a few points I've made from my experience with the game.
    1.) Selling. I can say that only a handful of people were active in selling on the secondary market. Aside from myself, I was competing with 3-4 others who would do mass openings to sell online. (Keep in mind that some people would still singles from time to time, but they would not become hardcore sellers.)
    2.) Pricing. when the game first came out, I got a booster box for $65. If people were buying it for $70 or higher, they were looking in the wrong place. The last few sets started to sell for around $55 per box. It was only recently that the base set started rising in price because it was out of print after a 24 month run.
    3.) Singles. There were many singles that were holding some value. generally, the ultra rares had a pull rate of 1 every other box, and usually one of the two UR cards were worth the price of the box alone. Then there were rares that would sell for $15-20 for a playset (DBZ playset is 3 copies, not 4.) Foil copies of the best rates would sell for the same price as a playset. My mass box openings always had me break even with the rares and Ur cards alone, then I'd sell foils and the bulk cards for profit.
    4.) Printing. The reason the price tanked for the game is because Panini killed the game and turned off production about a month after the recent set came out. A lot of us sellers got burned on this, as it caused the prices to hit rock bottom. Panini claims it was because Bandai is making their own DBZ card game. However, the last set (Awakening) had weak cards and new Dragon Rares that took up an UR slot, but they were just certain characters reprinted in a new foil process (and worth as much as some rares.) They really dropped the ball on it. Everything up to that set was good.
    The game is actually really fun to play. It mimics a fight, where "combat" each turn was the two characters using attack and defense cards, going back and forth like in a battle to jack eachother up. I'm sure there's TH-cam videos simplifying the game.
    If you have any other questions, hit me up.

    I remember years back working for Pendence demoing the Alien Vs Predator CCG (Still an amazing game, with a crazy high secondary market) they tried to get me to demo Tomb Raider. That game died quicker then any game I remember. And they released expansions for it so fast it was mind boggling. Like the game came out, then a month later an expansion. Then two months and another expansion.
    Loved Legend of the Five Rings since the beginning! But when you look at what happened with the companies shenanigans that pissed off stores, it explains why the game died off. Although it was starting to make a recovery when Fantasy flight bought them.

    Panini DBZ is a super-salty topic for me. We had such a healthy local scene and it was growing. The singles market was very healthy, the regional tournaments were decent sized, 300+ usually. It was a unique game(loved the score version too, which this obviously followed closely). Luckily, my local group is still active with DBZ. The devs of the game have continued to develop it and release new cards online for free!

    I played L5R off and on for YEARS since the 90's. I spent several years not playing any card games and when I decided to come back I was shocked L5R died. Good to hear the FFGs is rebooting it. I also played DBZ back when Score made the cards and played for the first 4-5 sets. When I came back I got the nostalgia bug and purchased a bunch of the very first set. I don't know much about Panini it seemed to me like a reboot? I played a little bit of Tomb Raider only because a friend of mine was really into it. It was okay. it it never really stuck. About midway through the video, just need to point out something about Panini DBZ: the reason they aren't making more is because Bandai's making a Dragonball Super TCG, and teven though the games are different, they don't want to flood the market with DBZ stuff. I'd argue that they should get their cards printed to the end of DBZ if that's really what's going on, but they are ending near the end of the Cell Saga and with a few movies, and it was the Buu Saga that kinda screwed up the balance of the Score DBZ game anyway, so I'm kind of OK with that. Just thought I'd like to note that Panini's game was actually decently popular (not huge by any means) and it's not ending because Panini's losing money on it.

    maybe the Thing With Panini is that here in europe they are best known for creating collectable Sticker Sets, often based on big Sports Events like the Football world Cup or famous movies, and unlike Trading cards those are very time sensitive so they only Print as much and as Long as relevant and then simply move on to the next Event, no Reprints, no prolonging shelf Life and no reason to Care for a secondary market. And I think this mentality still exists With their CCGs.
