Cool ideas so far. Here is the list of mods to my GTL: Mine was a pre-TFT and I was able to mount a Zumo XT in the slot where the Nav VI went with some functions controlled by the Wonderwheel. I also swapped my seat for a Russell, my windscreen was a 7Jurock 20” (same height as stock) light tint. I swapped my GTL handlebars for GT bars because they put me in a slightly more forward-leaning position, and I installed Helibar risers and grip puppies. All of these ergonomic mods were to fit my 6’5” 225 lb self for multi-day LD touring. Highway pegs were from Wundrliche. Auxillary lighting was a pair of Clearwater Ericas wired to the bike’s CANBUS. Rear lighting was Clearwater Billy brakes and reflective film on the panniers. Hope this gives you more farkling ideas. Damn- now I really miss my GTL!
We think alike. I should have said this is step 1. I am doing the same Ericas, love clearwater lights. Ive read allot about the Jurock shield, coming from my GSA this bike has great wind protection I can't imagine getting more. I was thinking the Illium pegs? Dave
The Illium pegs look cool, but the clamp on one of the pegs literally disintegrated on my friend’s RT. This was about 5 years after he mounting them on his bike.
@@KendallAdventureandTravel Dave: a couple of quick questions on gear…..sorry if this has been covered before…..what helmet and comms device (Sena, etc) do you use and which boots? Thanks.
@@waltermitty7452 I wear a Shoe Neo Tech 2, it just fits great. I also use a Cardo Pac Talk edge headset, I buy the dual pack so I can have one charging while the other is in use, attaches with a magnet and I can swap them on the fly. As far as boots, I wear Alpinestars SMX 6, again I go for comfort. These are not water proof but they are vented and dry super quickly...Dave
Looks like you've got a handle on everything. Don't forget hydration. I hang a MotoJug off the passenger peg along with a SS jug I got off Amazon. Works great. Ice will last a few days. If you don't go with the MotoJug, then the Aerostich tank panniers strapped under the seat is a good alternative,.
I have a plate that was built for my GSA, bolts to the passenger peg, so far it looks like it will work on this bike as well, allowing the Moto jug to bolt right up...Dave
When you started talking about the seat, I was cringing from the initial testing I did with the stock seat. I went with the RDL as well. Seems like it could have been a touch bigger (front-to-back), but it's good for 1500 miles. I went with all leather. The OEM battery on my 2016 would only last about 2-years, and I changed it then to be sure. Last one I got was an Odyssey 680. Hoping it will last longer, as it is actually smaller in the battery compartment. Also, the connections required a 3rd party L-bracket set. I probably should go with a PDM-60 or something similar, but there's not much room under the seat. I've also been using Tackform pieces for mounting, but it doesn't lock. Your choice seems better. Waiting on that auxillary tank option now....
I am using the Denali PDM, hope it was a good choice. I used all leather on my last RDL, probably do the same here. Tank I am making will replicate a Maple Farkle, mounting it on the back with a Pelican case on top. I hope only a few weeks out....Dave
Hello Dave and thanks for this most informative video about GPS mounts which I have just found. I have a 2024 K1600 GTL and use the Connected Ride app on my phone that sits in the phone cubby space and works well in most cases. However, I’ve just completed an 8 day ride here in Australia where in some areas cell coverage was nil and this meant that the connected app dropped out. I’ve therefore considered switching to the new BMW Connected Ride Navigator unit which has satellite navigation but could not see a way to attach this unit to the bike. Your video solves this issue I think with the Pen R mount to the handlebar stem. A couple of questions 1. How would the navigator attach to the Pen R mount which has screw holes (the Nav unit has none)? 2. I presume that the Nav unit would have to be charged via a usb cable to the accessory socket? 3. I presume that the Nav unit cannot be controlled by the wonderwheel and would therefore not collect some data as it would do if it were attached to a Nav Preparation mount on a GS/A for example. Thanks again - at least I have an idea now of what to do.
Mike: Glad the video was helpful, here is what I did. The Pen R mount is the best one Ive tested, it is out of the want and allows easy mount and removal of the GPS itself. I used the GPS prep mount, stock BMW Product, you can't use the locking device but again it's easy to mount and remove. The stock BMW mount has mounting holes and it was simple to bolt on. As far as power, I again went to BMW for parts and used OEM BMW parts for wiring. If you look at my video where I mounted my Clearwater waters and Power hub you can see the wiring that I did. Lastly the wonder wheel does not control it, sure wish it did but it does not. If you email me at ...Kendall.david@yahoo.com I can send you more detailed pictures if you need. Dave
