    Finally! A great instructional Coptic stitch video, without dreadful background music!
    Nice clear instructions and the double thread in the last signature is neat, instead of over the back cover . Thank you!

      I am glad you liked the video! Yes, the double thread is just one way to do the cover, but I think it is most straightforward, especially for people new to bookbinding stitching :) Thanks for your comment.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! Your video really helped me SEE the actual stitching method and I made my 1st coptic stitched sketchbook! I had so many old 18" x 24" drawing pads and I wanted to use them on a smaller scale. I watched so many helpful videos on this, but yours was the BEST that I could find that showed the stitching clearly. The extra "tug" really helped the stitches to look very uniformed and consistent. I used a curved needle so it made the process go alot faster. THANK YOU AGAIN! I LOVE MY HOMEMADE SKETCHBOOK! IT TURNED OUT AWESOME!

    Thank you for your version of making a hard cover Coptic stitch book. For several years I've followed another book binder who sewed the cover and first of last signature on at the same time so she didn't have the double stitching in the last signature, however I liked your idea of the french knot at the beginning and end of every row, so Thank you for sharing and from now on I will be doing both versions in my book binding

    I love this video! I was taught to do a coptic binding 25 years ago...and it seems that the last signature and the back book cover went on at the same time? That it made only the single row of stitching in the last signature ???? It doesn't really matter, just wondering if I've dreamed that technique and am totally wrong? Lol!

  • @jordansmithson9602

    Why not just see the last signature and the back cover at the same time?

    • @Papercutspress
      @Papercutspress  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jordan! The short answer is: wrangling the signature and cover at the same time is an extra challenge. I made this video for classes I teach to mostly-beginners and have found that separating the steps makes for more successful books and less frustrated students.

  • @AnonymousXIII
    @AnonymousXIII ปีที่แล้ว

    My first thought is that you could make use of curved upholstery needles to simplify getting that loop around your stitch. Not sure if there would be other repercussions of that that I'm not considering, though.

      Hi Leah! I use this video in conjunction with online classes I teach, so yes this step is only part of the bigger picture. If this video happens to be helpful to those who have not taken my classes - great! I might make more comprehensive video tutorials in the future, but for now this is a stand-alone stitch tutorial to compliment other steps (for now) found elsewhere. There are many other video tutorials on preparing pages and covers for coptic binding. Most of those could be paired with these stitching tips of mine. I appreciate your interest! I'll keep it in mind as I think about making more videos...

    Can you add your final signature and the back cover at the same time to just have one strand running through the final signature?

  • @WilliamCunninghamII
    @WilliamCunninghamII 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent video. I would really like to see a bit more about threading the needle. After watching for awhile it became clear that you are using a single strand of thread to bind the book. Seems silly I know, I am a complete newbie...but perhaps you could spend 30 seconds up front explaining this and how you actually set the thread up. Also would be nice to hear exactly what type of thread you recommend. I assume waxed linen?
    But these are minor nits. Really appreciate you sharing the technique.I have my signatures ready to go, just need to get covers completed.
    I would also be very interested in your thoughts as to the maximum practical number of signatures one can include in the book (assuming 20 page, 10 leaf signatures). I am building personal journals and would like to have a minimum of 340 pages in order to have one full page per day for an entire year.

    • @Papercutspress
      @Papercutspress  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi William, thanks for your comments. This is a video I use in conjunction with online classes I teach and so I acknowledge that it is not a total package. I hope to make more comprehensive videos in the future! As far as high page count my general recommendation is to pay attention to the weight of the page paper you're using. Once you get a lot of signatures in a book there is a significant difference in the total thickness when using like 60gsm vs 130gsm weight paper. Also, remember you have front and back writing surfaces on 1 page so your example of 10 leaf signatures actually yield 40 separate writing surfaces. At that rate you would only need 9 signatures in your book to hit 360 separate surfaces (if you meant one page surface per day, not front+back per day). I don't have a concrete answer for a practical number of signatures - it depends a lot on the weight of the paper and also the scale of the book. For me, 12 is manageable, and 15 is starting to get high, but 20 is not unheard of. With this binding, a smaller book with a really high number of signatures can sometimes start acting like a slinky! But larger covers can accommodate higher signature count. One way to find out... try it! :)

      Hi thanks for asking! This is waxed linen bookbinding thread. I'm using 4-ply. Most places that sell bookbinding supplies have it - i get mine from Two Hands Paperie it comes in a lot of different colors! twohandspaperie.com/products/waxed-linen-thread-royal-blue?_pos=9&_sid=b2c52e26c&_ss=r

    34:28 _"as long as it will not get out of the book"_ - why not use it as attachment for a bookmarking ribbon?

      Great idea! I have seen something similar with beads attached on the bottom. Beautiful and functional :) Thanks for commenting with your idea!

    May I ask what are the materials? Like the sizes of the papers and the cover.

      My pages here are 9-1/2 x 6-1/4" folded into signatures that are 4-3/4 x 6-1/4". The cover is 5 x 6-5/8" - one hack I recommend is using full 8-1/2 x 11" sheets for pages, folding them into 8-1/2 x 5-1/2" signatures, and cutting bookboard covers to 8-7/8 x 5-3/4". That way you don't have to cut pages, just bookboard.

    As hand binding is concerned, I really think Coptic is the most ideal. Not only is it quicker and takes less skill and materials to produce, but the books are appreciably durable. Especially if they're reinforced with endbands. There's at least one 4th century papyrus codex that survived down to our day, with its binding intact no less, and many others from later centuries. My favourite feature is it can be opened flat. Very few binding methods have that ability.

      Fellow Coptic lover! It is my favorite too :) In the classes I teach I always share the "Timeline for the Structure of the Book" from Jane Greenfield's "ABC of Bookbinding" to illustrate the history, and show slides of some of extant coptic structures - I love history and books! Lol. And yes, the lay-flat can't be beat. Thanks for your comment.

    How do you calculate how much thread to cut in order to have enough to complete the book without a ton of waste or coming up short and having to add more?

    Great tutorial- thanks! We used a curved needle and it's easier to get "loop" and get on with your stitch 😊
