Newbie to understanding how generators work and I’m looking to buy one to power my fridge and a cooler just in case the power goes out during our heated summer. I don’t have a transfer switch on my electrical panel so getting a generator and using extension cord is my goal. I’m watching a lot of TH-cam videos to figure out what size of generator is the safest way without ruining my fridge…so much to consider. 😅

For what you're wanting to do you could use a smaller generator than what I've got. I don't have a transfer switch either and just run extension cords. It works well. I run the fridge, freezer, and a couple window units.

@@Bairleafarmso which extension cord is best for the refrigerator and which voltage?
I noticed in most videos that the outlet on the right which is what is used to plug for the RV and the home because it uses full capacity on the generator so is that the size of extension cord I need?

@h.briseno8597 12 or 14 awg would be a good size for that.

@@Bairleafarm Do I buy 2? One for the fridge and cooler. I noticed you have an extension cord that has multiple outlets.

@h.briseno8597 a 12 awg would handle both. If you go smaller I'd run 2. I run multiple cords because I go I'm multiple directions. Different rooms and different buildings.

I have a generator with 2-20 amp receptacles. Into one I will plug in a 25 foot 12 gauge extension cord and its other end has 3-15 amp outlets.
Into one of these I will plug in a refrigerator that draws 11 amps and into the others I'll plug in very small window AC, light and a fan.
So in this scenario I’m good as long I don’t exceed 20 amps for the generator or 15 amps per outlet?

I'd say you're good. Seems like a set power distribution plan.
