Okay that makes sense then. For example Avi Kaplan known in Pentatonix as the bass singer of a pop acapella band created the name Avriel and the Sequoias for a separate folk E.P. release and when he left Pentatonix he dropped the name and just started releasing under his own name with a new folk rock, Americana, whatever genre you want to call it, supporting band behind him as his new sound evolved to what he writes and performs now as a solo singer-songwriter.

So do you make up a name and start creating accounts under it, or do musicians bother trademarking their new name? It's ~$500 to do that. It happens occasionally a company like Twitter comes along and names their product X without realizing someone is using that. I suppose it's more important if you sell merch. Also do we register the copyright for each song? Seems like if it's not under your name the automatic copyright might be a little less sticky. But then again your name would be registered with your distributor.

So when it comes to writer names… I have my legal name as my account holder on ASCAP which has its IPI number, and I created an alias “Miguel Sandre” in which ASCAP created its own IPI number.
I give libraries for sync the IPI number of Miguel Sandre (my alias) and in the songwriter name field I write Miguel Sandre, not my legal name. I do sign contracts with my legal name tho.
Am I correct doing so? I do it that way because Miguel Sandre’s IPI is pretty much a sub IPI that is linked to my Legal Name IPI. So even if you search up my legal name or my Alias on Songview, you’ll find all my works.

So when it comes to songwriter credits, I have Miguel Sandre as my artist name/composer name but that’s not my real name. I have created a pseudonym IPI on ASCAP. Which means I have an IPI for my real name and an IPI for my artist name. I only give my artist name IPI which is liked to my ASCAP.
the goal is to have the songwriter section mention my artist name instead of my legal name. Is that ok? Or should I provide my legal name IPI for future projects?

If I have 2 genres, should I have 2 different distributors or can I have 2 accounts with same distributor (like CDBABY) ?

great question! you should only need 1 account with 1 distributor. while you're preparing to upload and schedule out your new release, then you'd just specify the different artist name/project alias. you could create 2 different accounts with the same distributor if you'd prefer to keep the discographies separate, that is just personal preference. please email me at info@aristake.com if you need more clarity!

@@ArisTake Thanks for your reply. I saw that Distrokid has a Musician Plus plan for 2 artists. So I may go with that.
