Hello there. I thought as a Swede I'd clarify this as it's quite a common misconception. Scandinavia consists of only three countries; Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Then there are "the Nordic countries" which consists of Scandinavia, Finland, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
@@jonnekallu1627 Greenland and the Faroe Islands are part of the Danish kingdom, but they were still mentioned... Åland is part of Finland but it has autonomy, just like the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
- Norway voted in 2019 to update the number and get 52 f-35's - The first f-35 arrived in 2017. - So far, half the fleet has been delivered. - This month the f-16 "retired" and the f-35 will take over all roles, starting 2022. - Believe the JSM will take over the role of the Penguin. Cool video :D
@@andersmalmgren6528 In an ideal world the nordic countries should have had a closer cooperation around defence spending and weapons research and manufacturing, instead of channelling so much money overseas.
Sorry to hear about the censoring, I've very much enjoyed the war game and the unplanned and surprising endings. I hope you get to continue soon, it was just getting spicy! Love the naval battles too, as well as the races, including the danged balloons, that was great!

Tbh I think the naval battles are more fun because they are smaller in scope and feel a bit more "realistic" (obv. it's still unrealistic, but whatever). In war games, the scope is just far too big to be even remotely close to how it would be in real life.
The Gripens are such damn cool fighters, and them with Meteor missiles are crazy good in real life as well. Probably fully upgraded Gripen C/D's with Meteor missiles are the best bang for the bugs in the world.
Lack of stealth capabilities limits its viability though, so it's kinda just sold as a "rubbish plane for poor people" as James May would probably put it. We can see this in the fact that even countries with relatively small military budgets like Finland, Netherlands and Norway are buying F-35s instead, since their combat effectiveness justifies the hefty price tag, and not to mention Lockheed Martin's F-35 offer to Finland was actually cheaper than Saab's Gripen offer iirc. Much like the Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale, the Gripen mostly just fills a niche for militaries that can't buy more advanced aircraft for whatever reason, would it be due to the price or political reasons.
@@hawkstable8889 Finland and Norway buying American planes is politics, and unless someone can offer twice the performance to half the price that will be the default choice, especially for Norway as they rely heavily on the USA reinforcements to bulk up their ground- and air forces. Stealth capabilities are nice, but what really hampers Gripen is the lack of range. That design choice was for two reasons: * Keeping up the tradition of not posing an offensive threat against USSR/Russia. Ranges are kept long enough to strike any harbour around the Baltic sea, but that's about it. * Since peacetime turnaround for rearm/refuel is 10-15 minutes, the doctrine is to dump the full load on the numerically superior enemy and then head back to get more. Purchasing price is just part of the cost though, it is usually a lot easier to have the politrickians on board for buying new latest and greatest stuff than to foot the bill to use them. Flygrevyn #8 2021 had some interesting numbers of cost per flight hour, done by an independent Britsh firm: F-35: 140 000 SEK Typhoon: 121 000 SEK Rafale: 111 000 SEK Super Hornet: 74 000 SEK F-16: 47 000 SEK JAS 39: 31 000 SEK Austria's Typhoons' has spent surprisingly large amount of time in the hangars due to this, with the pilots relegated to simulator training in Germany to keep the worst rust away.
You can tell the Harpoon at what range to turn its seeker head on. If you know the ranges of the ship from the AWACS and there is a few miles of separation between ships in range, and you account for their movement during Harpoon flight time you can isolate a certain target
I don't think it would work Tom, remember those ships are gonna be moving at 30knots and may turn. Bearing in mind that the time of flight of missiles is so long, I think you wouldn't risk doing that, as you may miss the fleet?? I suppose you are the expert here but I still think it's risky?
@@grimreapers I am skeptical that it would work on a battle group as well. Theoretically it could, but you would have to be dam lucky and know the precise movements of the group. It’s main function was to avoid neutral shipping between the target and the shooter. The two new ASCMs we can likely pick out a single target based on IR signature.
@@grimreapers That's where NSM and JSM come into play. And Norway have 35 F35 active at the moment, and they all can carry JSM. NSM and JSM can work in a Network and coordinate between each other, during an attack
@@heuhen I'd argue it is more a limitation of the game not modelling current Western weapons whilst the Kuznetsov group - which hasn't even been fielded yet - is modelled with the latest & greatest defensive systems Mother Russia can design.
@@mrkeogh I do not think that ED being a Russian company can provide accurate modeling of "latest & greatest defensive systems Mother Russia can design". According to Russian law, this would be a crime. Similarly, it would be a breach of the US law to accurately simulate modern Western weapons.
14:29 Gripen isn't stealth, but it *is* low visibility. Mix that with the electronic warfare systems and its capabilities are surprisingly good. In wargames in the US the Gripens are apparently able to get scarily close while remaining undetected according to one US fighter pilot. At least that's the case in reality, in this game? Who knows...
Norway would use their Naval Strike missiles with their Thermal Imaging based targeting system to target specific ships...you guys really need that to be added in ;)
Concerning the Harpoon problem, 2 suggestions: Fire them in waves so that the first wave hits everything in the way, then give some time to sink and disappear, and then the second wave can go for whatever was behind. Second suggestion: Fire from different angles so that it will become less likely that all the Harpoons see the same scenery and go for the same ship.
And as an old F4 BMS-simmer (F4 Falcon since 1999, callsign "Vip" - 4000 hours), I whish I had the "DCS skills" to participate in these missions, sadly, I don't have to time to really get up to speed again. These videos really brings back fond memories. Thanks!
Norway had F 35 jet's when you made this. And Norway has been using Naval strike missile. NSM. Since 2012 That can go over 185km Check it out and please make a new one of this. With the right equipment. Right planes and missiles and we Skandinavia have ship's to. Thanks. Love your war games
Armchair admiral here. I would change the order of the missiles. Fire the harpoons first to swarm an overwhelm the cruisers. After the cruisers have expended their munitions and potentially lost vessels, send in the penguins at the carrier.
This is indeed a problem with plans. But let's assume this is how it played out. Next steps: Finland does not need to reinforce it's naval attack group and seems to have suffered no losses. So another strike can be launched. Swedens airgroup has been mauled but could be launced with anti ship missles. Danish group is entirely kia and is out of the fight. Since the planes are launched from Norway the Norwegians could put reserves in for another strike with minimum delay. Russian carrier group has expended a lot of missles, lost a cruiser, another damaged and it's entire airwing is gone. Withdrawing the carrier group is paramount So this in my opinion is a strategic Scandinavian victory
Fun video! Btw, small correction: Finland has more hornets than those 55 C-models. We also have a couple of twin-seat D-hornets. 7, if memory serves, as I think we have 62 hornets total left right now after losing a couple of them in accidents.
In a few weeks Finland will decide about its next main fighter. The options are F-35A, Super Hornet (with some Growlers thrown in the mix), JAS Gripen E, Rafale, and Eurofighter. I suspect it is going to be either F-35 or Gripen - Rafale and Eurofighter are unlikely imho, and Super Hornet is already an older platform. The amount of all planes should be in or around 64.
@@mrs7195 super hornet deal would come with other benefits tho. A lot of old legacy hornet stuff would directly translate to new platform plus they would get a growler on top of the deal. In my opinion F-35 is too expensive to maintain in long run, but Gripen is an excellent choice... However gripen only has one engine, a feat which has saved a couple hornets in the past in our mishaps during excercises 😁
@@d0ppler77 always someone has to say this comment 😅 Answer really depends on your definition. If by argument of physiography/geography, then Scandinavia would be Norway/Sweden/Finland(last time i checked tiny part of Finnish lapland is consired in Scandinavian mountain range and hence part of the peninsula). By that definition I would rule out Denmark, because it is technically located on the North European Plain instead of Scandinavian peninsula. My real answer: who cares 😝
Interestingly accurate to a point. Gripens would indeed go for a strike as quick as possible, get within range, cut straight through with the EW pod, making retaliatoins impossible, fire, score some kills .... but then they fall back just as fast. without ever being seen by anything except long range radar, if even that.
14:45 I believe the Gripen C got an RCS on 0,5 M^2 but have seen as low as 0,25 M^2. The Gripen E is listed at 0,1 m^2. But all of them ofcause is much bigger with all their missiles on. But they also got a world-class EW suit.
As much as I love the wargames I love the naval battles too. Genuinely the most entertaining stuff on TH-cam. P.S. I’m sure a lot of us would be interested in a standalone patreon esque fundraiser for the wargames series - the effort must be huge and it shows, certainly more value than a Netflix subscription!
Swedish airforce have a 200km range anti-ship missile that Gripen can carry, named RBS-15F ER. It is based on a quite old design that has been continually improved and upgraded over the years. Will be fully replaced in a few years by a the Mk. IV Gungnir with 300km range. With a 200km range it can launch at a much greater distance than the Penguin that only have a 35 or 55 km range. But at subsonic speeds it will need to attract air protection away from the carrier group and likely launch quite a few decoys. Updated since I heard you mentioning the Mk 4 towards the end. I think I would attack the outer edge ships in the blockade first, one by one. Two groups from each direction to force the Russians split their planes in two groups too. But only in a way where they first fly off in one direction and then have to double back when they spot the second group. Then send a fairly small group straight for Kuznetsov, just to tempt them to fire off their anti-aircraft missiles. Turn around as soon as possible to get out of range. Repeat until the air cover is forced to peel off from protecting the outer ships in the blockade. You don't fight this kind of battle in one attack unless you have an overwhelming advantage. You can only win if you can force your opponent to do something that will weaken his position, because then he will hesitate and start to make mistakes. It is up to you to make sure that of all the choices your opponent can make, none are good. They are all bad.
The war game series you created is the best I’ve ever seen! I thoroughly enjoyed the videos you posted and I want to say thank you for all the hard work the reapers put into that simulation. I’m really sorry to hear about the censorship. Is there anyway you can restart the series but use fictitious names for the countries involved?
I see a win here with no aircraft left on the carrier and the Kirov sunk. I would argue that the CG has been defeated until Russia manages to get new jets on the carrier.
I would have put some of the JAS on attacking the naval units, cuz the Gripens and their older cusins the Viggen are built with air to sea combat in mind, and they would almost always act in company with Swedish/nato Naval units and fire beyond the horizon with data link targeting
Here in Norway we do have the F-35 in active service, but still not anti ship-capable with missiles yet. Soon our F-35s will be equipped with JSM Joint Strike Missile, and it will be a game changer. It would be interesting to see this battle done again, only this time with a squadron of RNoAF F-35 with JSM instead of the F-16 with Penguines. Please? 😊
@@AyOuB.God-soldier In real life the Scandinavian countries wouldn't attack a Russian carrier group alone without help from other NATO members. Most likely utilising a US and/or UK carrier strike group. Not to mention what is lurking under water
16:05 The Gripen C's design allows a much better better top speed and they have got less drag then the F-16 and especially the FA-18, but I'm not so sure they got a better climb rate as they got less power to weigh, but then again the F-16's and FA-18's carry more weapons so maybe they will climb slower.
@@Nr15121 I mean, you're not wrong. Also, with _Kirov_ on the bottom, _Kuznetsov_ is wide open for a second Harpoon attack, especially if more F-16s can actually get Penguins through to reduce the _Slavas._.
Norway has got 24 of their ordered F-35A's at the time of the video it might only be 21. At least most of them are in Norway though they probably also got a few in the US, used for training. Denmark has received a few, but they are all in the US for training right now.
Big fan of the logic that says the Russians get 2023 spec battle group with MiG-29Ks, but the Danes can't have F35s because they're on order. Love that.
Taking out the entire carrier air group and making them expend a large portion of the missile stores in the process would force a withdrawal and therefore break the blockade. Definite win.
Scandinavia is Norway, Sweden, Denmark. Nordic countries are Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. And the F-35 does exist and is operational in Norway. Sorry for being grumpy, just dealing with a migraine.
Not surprised with the assessment of the Gripen "lacking legs". Sweden makes some incredible aircraft...but projecting power is not part of their military doctrine. Unless the mindset has changed since I was there (and it's been three decades, so that's entirely possible), Sweden's military exists primarily to convince any would-be aggressor that occupying the country would be more trouble than it would be worth. Their planes have generally been intended to protect Swedish airspace, so attacking a target hundreds of miles beyond the Norwegian coast is not something they would plan for. Agreed with many others that this is, at best, a Pyrrhic victory for the Russian group.
For the F-35A Norway currently have 31 in their air fleet with 21 in Norway and 10 in the US for training and testing. The reasoning behind the change from Su-33 to Mig-29K is cost as to update the Su-33 to something near what the Mig-29K offers would be extremely expensive and the Mig-29K's capabilites have practically been paid for by the Indian Navy. Also on a plus side the Kuznetsov should be able to carry more Migs due to it's smaller size anywhere up to a third more.
The best thing ever! We love it. Baby loves it. Absolutely no negative comments. I've worn it at a zoo, shopping, and even around the house. Comfortable and easy to use.
The reason why they move to mig 29k: You deploy up to 36 mig 29k on Kuznetsov while only 18 su-33, because mig 29 is smaller. Russia plans to order more mig-29k when Kuznetsov will be ready. They actually removed its strike weapons making hangar bigger. Mig 29K also has lower RCS compared to su 33, because 20 % of its body is made of composites and radar absorbing materials. There is a mistake on the model of this aircraft: it can carry up to 9 missiles (1 under the belly and 4 under each wing). Yours had just 3 hardpoints under wings. Russia also installed new engines on Kuznetsov so it shoud not be smoky in its next sea mission.
From the little researching I've done, it seems as though the su-33 never quite lived up to its promise. It lost just about every export contract it bid for. I think you're right that the size has a lot to do with it. It's massive, as fighters go, and Russian carriers aren't all that big to begin with.
@@DanielWilliams-oi4ss Well, su 33 will still be used by Russian navy aviation, but not from aircraft carrier but from land base in the Northern fleet. They also ordered 50 su-30sm2 (22 are delievered) for navy aviation. It really seems that they want to make Kuznetsov as much a carrier, as it can be, before building next aircraft carrier.
I'm a fan of the Su-27 derivatives as a rule, and i think it makes a lot more sense to have the bigger planes if you're operating from a big airfield. It just seems like the 33s got kneecapped by the compromises needed to get them to operate from a carrier
I’d of split the fighter sweep into 3 flights of Gripen’s to draw the Mig’s away and then attack the fleet from the south. Arm all the F16s with Penguins. Best way I can think of to target individual surface combatants is to fire off the Harpoons first to deplete the SAMs / CIWS and then send in the F16s with their Penguins to target individual ships. Gripens don’t need to win, they just need to drag the logs away so the carrier can be sunk by the F16s.
The censoring of the Counterweight Continent campaign was a load of old bollocks! This war game is pretty good though. You didn't get the carrier, but you denuded an airwing as well as a heap of the missile supply of the enemy fleet and took out a battlecruiser. Unless they have a couple of good re-supply ships on hand, that carrier group is going to have to withdraw to resupply, and the Russians don't have another carrier to rotate through to the blockade. So that group you'd think would move off to the Northwest roughly to get closer to replenishment, and you might want to see if you can do anything to interdict that. Then there would be whatever units are left for blockading duties, and their subs.
Maybe it would have been wiser for the Scandinavians to try to attack with submarines - that has worked well enough vs. US carrier group on exercise in the past.
Norway have F-35A's in active service since 2017, they're due 42 in total to replace the F-16s which is why the number shows 21 still on order out of 42. The Danish AF currently have taken delivery of 1 F-35A which is at Luke AFB as part of the pilot and maintainer training. Sorry, but I'm a bit of an F-35 nerd :P
Only 21 F-35s are operational with Norway and 21 are on order. Added to that, the F-35s only carry four air to air missiles, and Norway wouldn't want to sacrifice its most capable aircraft in a real life scenario.
Pinguin as good as it was/is .. are after all quite old missile type, we now here in Norway atleast have started with the Naval Strike Missile (that also fit into the F-35 now), they also have them on our Coastal Corvettes (stealthy ones) and are working to get them on our new subs from Germany.

Planning is how you overcome that :-) with some planes using drop tanks (and 1-2 fewer missiles) you could do a "circle"... using the faster planes and "slower" planes to encompass the enemy for maximum accuracy. This was sort of a brute force attack :-) fun to watch though! JAS39 Gripen E variant would be almost as fast but have a longer range and better ECM and so on... I think that would changed the game in this scenario...
Just to add. The F35s are in Norway. They sometimes fly over my house. And have been a bit more active the last few months. Love these videos, Cap. One day I will invest in a proper pc and get DCS
I do want to point out that both sides lost a similar amount of planes AND, the Pyotr Veliki was sunk and the Kuznetzov was a mission kill (how many living russian naval aviators left?). You may have been disappointed but the blockade is lifted.
Gripen can carry the Rb15f-ES antiship missile an updated Rb15f that you used in another scenario but on the Viggen you saw how powerful that missile was then.
The RB15 is kind of a broken missile in DCS. It flies lower then any other antiship missile in game and hits way harder then the Harpoon even though the harpoon has a slightly larger warhead.
@@calmterror But they do fly lower they are skimmers if you choose that attackmode. I would also argue that the Harpoon is underperforming in DCS compared to irl also behaving really weird sometimes maybe a bug.

Apparently the MiG29K replaced the Su33 because the 33s were getting to the end of their service life. Plus the 29s are smaller; more room on deck, and an RCS 4-5 times smaller than previous 29s.
22:12 MiG-29S that you are using here is not really good substitution for MiG-29K afaik. So there is a chance that Su-33 would actually do better here (but they could also do not, hard to tell xD)
So, just a slight correction. Norway has had F-35s in active service for a while now. We have over 20 of them in service with at least 20 more in production.
Also, given the presence ofndiesel subs lurking, any attack would probably haven involved them as well. Asw operations with an ongoing air defence battle overhead are difficult. Also, we all know what wily devils those skands in subs are.

@SubtoPolecat324 we should either just get block 50 F16, Europe fighter or the Gripen. We only selected the F35, because the Americans promised to integrate the Norwegian missle. So Norwegian tax payers are paying billions for the F35 so a Norwegian arms company could make 100 million...
F-35 is taking over the NATO QRF for Norway in 22. Both the Penguin and the AIM-9M are legacy. Norway uses the IRIS-T, which is much more capable. Both the F-16 and the F-35 will carry the JSM, not the Penguin. The F-35 does so internally, which means remains stealthy. The NSM is the next generation Penguin, and the JSM is a further improvement. It is greatly improved, and the new JSM variant (Joint Strike Missile) has a range of over 300nm). The missile itself is stealthy, and uses random maneuvers in its terminal phase to make it harder for enemy countermeasures like CIWS. The JSM has an IIR-seeker (soon to be complemented by a radio-frequency seeker) and an onboard target database. It is able to detect, recognize and select targets independently.
We need to see the Chinese carrier and the US carrier fight in the next battle as they were heading towards each other in the Pacific. I want to see that one.
What I would do is fire the harpoons so they arrive first. They'll absorb all the Grumbles, allowing planes with more discriminating missiles to close to firing range.
When this video was released, a change of guard was going on i Norway, and now the F-16 are retiered, and replaced with the F-35. The F-35 have been in service though for some time ;)
Well I guess it isn't actually official yet or the news hasn't yet reached that far but Finland has 64 F-35A planes on order. A decision I object and I was for the 64 Gripen-E and two Globaleye planes that were on offer. Politics...
Great and exciting battle as always! A bit of pedanticism though. Scandinavia is just Norway, Denmark and Sweden. It is a matter of language, culture as well as geography.
Map wise, yes, but military alliance wise Finland is included in most. Be it failed alliances post ww2 or stuff like the Nordic council or Nato plans (which also includes none Nato members ala Sweden).
A few facts to add: Finland doesn’t have Harpoons and for a good reason. Baltic sea is so narrow that even land based missiles would be enough. Secondly Gripen is a very cost effective plane but it hasn’t faired that well in real-life wargames. Usually Swedes lose 2 Gripens for 1 Hornet. Against Russians the odds are more even we can agree.
Finland are looking to buy new combat aircraft, and the choice seems to be down to either F35 or Gripen E. As such, it seems weird Finland would even consider Gripen if it historically had been so outperformed by the Hornets.
@@Fuhrerjehova Gripen has plenty of benefits but they're mainly on the sector of maintenance. In 1 vs. 1 combat Gripen E usually loses against F-18MLU, F-16MLU or F-35. On the three last candidates Gripen faired the worst against Super Hornet and F-35. On combat capability and munitions load it lost for Super Hornet and F-35. Eurofighter and Rafale were disqualified from competition. Reason was the failure to establish adequate assembly and overhaul facilities to Finland. This HX-competition was probably the largest bidding war and testing program ever held in the defence industry. There is no need to discriminate anyone by nationality. Usually the cheapest isn't the best one. On this competition the focus was to buy 64 fighters. In order for Gripen to reach the similar performance atleast 75 fighters would've been needed. Already at this point we can say that Gripen had lost the game.
@@tarpattituopponen7783 That is totally untrue. It has been proven many times in real war games that the Gripen is superior fighter compared to F-16. Just Google Red Flag to read about it. There is also combat training among our neigbours. This is a quote from GlobalDefense: "And no disrespect to any other fighters, including Norwegian pilots because they're just as well trained, but during a combat exercise with the Royal Norwegian Air Force, 3 Swedish Gripens went up against 5 RNAF F-16's. The result was 5-0, 5-0, 5-1 after having flown 3 rounds." It would be interesting if you could provide some evidence for your claim that the Gripen "usually loses against F-18MLU, F-16MLU or F-35". Where and when did it happen? Or is it just theoretical? provide links.
I agree with the others in that although the carrier in theory could go home and rearm spare aircraft's that would leave the blockade completely defenceless. As a result this is a win as tactically as a carrier is too expensive to leave defenceless and vulnerable and nor would they leave a blockade to be destroyed alone so it would need to withdraw. But in the rules of the game yeah, the carrier won.
In theory, those fighters would not have airbases still remained intact in entire Scandinavia to return to. I guess Gripen's ability to land on highways would be handy. They could park between T-90's and BMP-3's 😄 I'm only half joking 🙂
I know the video is few months old so probably you will not notice the comment but I can't figure out how did you came up with the Russian escort group? There are nominally two Kirovs in the Northern Fleet and zero elsewhere, but only one is operational and as soon as the one refit is ready the one operational now goes into refit. There is one Slava in the Northern Fleet and one in the Pacific there was one more in the Black Sea Fleet but no more. So you put all active area defense vessels that Russia has into the battle group. This seems too many. I think you need to scratch at least one Slava from that group.
Maybe if the timings were better, the FA-18's should have come first, then the F-16's and the Gripens. Possibly if they had come from different directions they could have hit different targets, and then at least hit a lot more of the escort ships.
I love that the Russian Navy is unbeatable in DCS; the grumbles NEVER miss; yet the Penguins are neutralized easily. I’m real life an ancient Soviet missile with a cheap drone took out a Moskova in a “bit” of rain. DCS update needed :).
Of course there was the usual misconception ; Finland and Iceland do not belong to Scandinavia, if those are to be included it is to be called the Nordic countries
Cap, Glad to see you stepped up your recording game 1440p60. It's not 4k60fps yet, but I have faith you will get there - jk Always love your content and thanks for your hard work
Once all the aircraft are shot down, does it matter if you hit the carrier? It's out of planes and isn't any more useful than a frigate at that point. The battle cruiser was probably the more valuable target once the MiG-29k's were destroyed.
I would think it is still very important to hit the carrier. It may not be a threat at this time but failing to take it out will allow it to return to base and get more aircraft and go back out. Then your right back where you started and it remains a serious threat. Replacing the aircraft is a lot easier than replacing the carrier.

Tbh I think the naval battles are more fun because they are smaller in scope and feel a bit more "realistic" (obv. it's still unrealistic, but whatever). In war games, the scope is just far too big to be even remotely close to how it would be in real life.
Seriously?! It's a F'ing game. Christo I hate YT and wish someone would build a viable competitor!
Much like the Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale, the Gripen mostly just fills a niche for militaries that can't buy more advanced aircraft for whatever reason, would it be due to the price or political reasons.
yeah they sweet as hell. Especially with the ghosting capabilities of the new EW they have.
That design choice was for two reasons:
* Keeping up the tradition of not posing an offensive threat against USSR/Russia.
Flygrevyn #8 2021 had some interesting numbers of cost per flight hour, done by an independent Britsh firm:
F-35: 140 000 SEK
Typhoon: 121 000 SEK
Rafale: 111 000 SEK
Super Hornet: 74 000 SEK
F-16: 47 000 SEK
JAS 39: 31 000 SEK
Austria's Typhoons' has spent surprisingly large amount of time in the hangars due to this, with the pilots relegated to simulator training in Germany to keep the worst rust away.

Gripen isn't stealth, but it *is* low visibility.
Mix that with the electronic warfare systems and its capabilities are surprisingly good.
In wargames in the US the Gripens are apparently able to get scarily close while remaining undetected according to one US fighter pilot.
At least that's the case in reality, in this game?

I think Iceland's role in this strike was criminally underrated! They sent their entire air force on the strike & didn't even get a mention! 😂

Agree with you on this one. The harpoon would also divert attention from the F16s as they run in too, if timed correctly!

This is indeed a problem with plans. But let's assume this is how it played out.
Next steps:
Finland does not need to reinforce it's naval attack group and seems to have suffered no losses.
Withdrawing the carrier group is paramount
So this in my opinion is a strategic Scandinavian victory
@@helgi1921 Tactical loss though since the goals was never achieved , but I agree that it would be suicide trying to sustain that blockade.
@@matso3856 true. But if a second strike could be launched then they might catch the carrier while SAR is ongoing or while they are withdrawing.
Fun video! Btw, small correction: Finland has more hornets than those 55 C-models. We also have a couple of twin-seat D-hornets. 7, if memory serves, as I think we have 62 hornets total left right now after losing a couple of them in accidents.
Thanks!
By that definition I would rule out Denmark, because it is technically located on the North European Plain instead of Scandinavian peninsula.
My real answer: who cares 😝
Too bad the newer RBS15 isn't modeled correctly in DCS. The older one on the Viggen should have a better chance to go through than the Harpoon.
Even the older versions were still more intelligent than the Harpoon system.
Interestingly accurate to a point. Gripens would indeed go for a strike as quick as possible, get within range, cut straight through with the EW pod, making retaliatoins impossible, fire, score some kills .... but then they fall back just as fast. without ever being seen by anything except long range radar, if even that.
Well they managed to deprive the carrier of aircraft, and destroyed the only kriov currently in operation so I'd say it went pretty well.
14:45 I believe the Gripen C got an RCS on 0,5 M^2 but have seen as low as 0,25 M^2. The Gripen E is listed at 0,1 m^2.

Peter the Great did her job, took all the missiles and protected the carrier. Served the motherland well
Swedish airforce have a 200km range anti-ship missile that Gripen can carry, named RBS-15F ER.
We have MkIV in game but sadly currently not working.

The Gripens are fast in real life.
Not because of power to weight ratio, but rather due to low drag.
I see a win here with no aircraft left on the carrier and the Kirov sunk. I would argue that the CG has been defeated until Russia manages to get new jets on the carrier.
yes fair point.
The same can be said about the aircraft carrier group of any state. But anyway, the first attack failed.
The Gripen C's design allows a much better better top speed and they have got less drag then the F-16 and especially the FA-18, but I'm not so sure they got a better climb rate as they got less power to weigh, but then again the F-16's and FA-18's carry more weapons so maybe they will climb slower.

Sorry for being grumpy, just dealing with a migraine.
thanks did not realise they were flying yet.

Correction tho, Scandinavia is just Denmark, Sweden and Norway. You could include Finland and Iceland in a “Nordic” setting
The reason why they move to mig 29k:
You deploy up to 36 mig 29k on Kuznetsov while only 18 su-33, because mig 29 is smaller. Russia also installed new engines on Kuznetsov so it shoud not be smoky in its next sea mission.
thx
Norway had changed out all F16 to F35 in 2021,
The censoring of the Counterweight Continent campaign was a load of old bollocks!
Can't cap just rename the series to: "Agathean empire invades Bhangbhangduc"? It even fits since Uncle Sam (Vimes) can intervene there too! 🐢
Maybe it would have been wiser for the Scandinavians to try to attack with submarines - that has worked well enough vs. US carrier group on exercise in the past.
cool video :) You´re wrong about scandinavia, Finland is not a part of Scandinavia, It is a part of the North but not Scandinavia.

@SubtoPolecat324 its even more expensive to keep the F-16

What I would do is fire the harpoons so they arrive first. They'll absorb all the Grumbles, allowing planes with more discriminating missiles to close to firing range.
Absolutely I’d have them target the cruisers as well then send the others on the carrier
Xmmmmm the west cast of Norway kind of looks like the east Mediterranean. spooky!!!!
Don't worry you're not disparaging the TH-cam overlords with this mission.
When this video was released, a change of guard was going on i Norway, and now the F-16 are retiered, and replaced with the F-35. The F-35 have been in service though for some time ;)
thx
Well I guess it isn't actually official yet or the news hasn't yet reached that far but Finland has 64 F-35A planes on order.
A decision I object and I was for the 64 Gripen-E and two Globaleye planes that were on offer.
Politics...
So. Thanks to you I got the game 🤣
The learning curve though 😬😬😬😬
I will say this. I'm fully qualified to slam an F-15 into the dirt
Great and exciting battle as always! A bit of pedanticism though. Scandinavia is just Norway, Denmark and Sweden. It is a matter of language, culture as well as geography.
thx
Map wise, yes, but military alliance wise Finland is included in most. Be it failed alliances post ww2 or stuff like the Nordic council or Nato plans (which also includes none Nato members ala Sweden).
Did anyone mention that Finland actually is not part of Scandinavia? :-)
This is a quote from GlobalDefense:
"And no disrespect to any other fighters, including Norwegian pilots because they're just as well trained, but during a combat exercise with the Royal Norwegian Air Force, 3 Swedish Gripens went up against 5 RNAF F-16's.
The result was 5-0, 5-0, 5-1 after having flown 3 rounds."
It would be interesting if you could provide some evidence for your claim that the Gripen "usually loses against F-18MLU, F-16MLU or F-35".
Love the vidz Cap keep up the good work 💖🙏
I know the video is few months old so probably you will not notice the comment but I can't figure out how did you came up with the Russian escort group? There are nominally two Kirovs in the Northern Fleet and zero elsewhere, but only one is operational and as soon as the one refit is ready the one operational now goes into refit. There is one Slava in the Northern Fleet and one in the Pacific there was one more in the Black Sea Fleet but no more.
So you put all active area defense vessels that Russia has into the battle group. This seems too many. I think you need to scratch at least one Slava from that group.
Idea: Break the land speed record by putting aircraft carriers end to end on groom lake for >4 nm runway!
Norway do have some F-35s, got the first ones in 2017, first NATO mission with them (norwegian F-35) were in winter 2020.
New viewer. Really enjoying the content. Keep it up :)
Welcome
That was enjoyable, either way. 🇨🇦 Veteran
Of course there was the usual misconception ; Finland and Iceland do not belong to Scandinavia, if those are to be included it is to be called the Nordic countries
Cap, Glad to see you stepped up your recording game 1440p60. It's not 4k60fps yet, but I have faith you will get there - jk Always love your content and thanks for your hard work
Yes sadly I have copper internet so 4k just won't be possible :(
So you knew in advance the harpoons would go for the very first ship in front of them, but didn't plan for that... 😉
Fair point.
I can tell tou that one spec for the Gripen from the goverment was that it would be a fighter with 2 mach speed. So yes, they are realy fasts planes.
