I think the best lesson you are teaching here is listening to details. Not just that a piece of music sounds cool but, WHY it sounds cool and HOW to put that tool in your own bag.

I agree. Sound is what matters to an audience.

This is a very good video. The root issue behind the articulation on a woodwind is the breathing pattern - when to inhale when to exhale, and not die along the way from oxygen deprivation. The pauses in the sheets for the woodwind SHOULD be the places where to inhale (a practice that Handel introduced). That means the score and entire orchestration for the woodwind should be written differently from the score for other instruments. However, not many composers/arrangers outside of the Classical world are aware of it. The saxophone is especially vulnerable, because it bleeds out air more quickly than trumpets, clarinets or oboes. It has a conical shape, and it is easier to sustain breath in the upper part of the instrument than in the lower. Composers / arrangers outside the Classical genre then give the saxophonists impossible scores, or just tell them, "Play along the piano and figure out". The saxophonist must make sense of that mess, transform it into something playable - and breathable. However, not all players have the same lung capacity nor same instrument setup. That was why various means of articulation were developed for the saxophone, conscious change of music keys, conscious calculation how to preserve the breath, how to extend it by thinning out, when to play silently, all in order to make wholesome music. It is perhaps the answer to why Ben Webster, Stan Getz and Kirk Whalum play differently and make variations on articulation; they rearrange the piece in other to breathe as well.

I had to go back a couple of times but that 'fall' you played was so subtle. I almost thought you just let your embochure go flat...perfectly executed.

I'm a big fan of "decay" vibrato, particularly wide & aggressive depending on style. Thanks for giving me a term for it!

Love your vids. In this one, you started off with takeoff flight and landing but I was waiting also for the landing. With my sound, When I listen back to it it sounds weakest when the ending of the notes isn't strong. Can you advise on that? Tones that kind of collapsed at the end let the whole thing down to my ear, and though some players manage to kind of trail off and still sound good, Getz for instance seems to sustain the strength of the note til the end. What say about how to not ruin your sound at the finale?
