I stayed in Uptown from the late 90s-early 2000s till my family moved to the south side. It was really chill despite it having a gang presence, I miss those days ngl.
I grew up in Belle Plaine and Broadway from the mid 90’s they 2000’s, experienced a lot of real life shit. That area is a microcosm of the wealthy and poor, the strong willed individuals and the mentally unstable, the black, white, hispanic, and asian, the lake front and the urban decay…all mixed in with gentrification. Helped shaped my world view and how life can be vibrant and dark…all within a day! I now live in Plainfield IL, raising a young family where everyday realities are much different. I did not want to expose my children’s life with the craziness and randomness of urban life, however the one element I do believe they’re missing is having “street smarts” which is very valuable in all aspects of life.

My parents moved to uptown in 1983. We lived in the lakeview towers. I lived there till 2005. Can’t believe I made it out alive.
