You can see Endeavor was really motivated by Hawks message, once he put together that the purpose of these work studies was to prepare for an all out war that the kids might (horrifically) end up as soldiers in, he changed his tune real quick from wanting to mostly focus on Shoto.
Dabi mentioning that the kids haven't grown much, is the exact reason that hawks stole their glory last episode. They would've destroyed those guys and shown how powerful they were, changing the fact that they underestimate them
All Might was a terrible teacher because everything came naturally to him. he's just naturally good at everything he does. Endeavour is a great teacher because he had to climb his way up to the top.
That's a good way of putting it. I was just thinking about this after reading Patreon comments, that All Might and Deku often feel more like friends than mentor-pupil. All Might has obviously been really great to Deku and has pushed him a long way, but comparing him to someone like Endeavor or someone like Jeong Jeong it's a totally different vibe.

One thing to say about Endeavor is that he is a well-fleshed out character. He starts out as someone you want to hate because his motivations seem selfish and harsh, then he gets built up as someone deserving of his position as number two because his dedication to saving people is real. An amazing hero but horrible person. Then slowly we get to see why his motivations are what they are, and how maybe his abilities and pride blinded him to what mattered like Bakugou started out, but you see Bakugou grow past it quickly once he’s out of the places that tolerate how he was before and learns that heroics is more than just power. Endeavor comes to that same realization, and applies it to family, and begins to realize his actions weren’t right and that he needs to make amends. He also understands he can’t force them to accept him, which is even more amazing for his character growth. Now we get him being a teacher of sorts and telling them very key details of how to hone their abilities in general, and even somewhat encouraging them to remind them that everyone started off small and became better over time with practice. That’s incredible, all of it, and people don’t give his or Bakugou’s characters enough praise for how human they feel in their organic growth that isn’t just overnight and inexplicable.
As shown in the previous episode, Slidin'Go is part of the larger villain group too. When Bakugo and Todoroki stopped that gang, the leader mentioned specifically it was the time of day when no heroes would be in that area... yet Slidn'Go was there anyway.
It’s episodes like this that are why I love anime and my hero academia so much. So much positivity, and growth and just food for thought that can be applied to all aspects of life. Great reaction and commentary as always. I’ve been thinking about that one thing at a time and was gonna use this whole next semester to practice my ability to ask and receive help. Ive always been a self learner, and just a basic go to class and do the work routine but that isn’t really cutting it anymore so I want to build relationships with my professors and go to much more office hours and stuff.
One thing I love about this episode is how it demonstrates endeavour’s effectiveness. He hasn’t always been a good person, but he’s definitely always been good at his job. If I recall in terms of pure stats he’s more effective than all might and this episode really shows that. Also superhero stories are so often about people just staring out with their powers it’s nice to see a hero who’s such an expert at using their’s and is so experienced.
iirc, Endeavor saying "you're having trouble with your quirk? you're not alone" in the sub is more like "you're one of us", which is even more directly putting himself on the same level!
What definitely helps Endeavor in being a good teacher is that not only did he work hard to build up himself and his agency but also in that he’s now the no.1, so a lot is expected of him so he had to shape up to lead by example.
I honestly prefer Endeavor as a mentor for Deku over Allmight. He just gives so much more practical advice for Deku. Allmight is more of like a mentor for encouragement and ideals.

This episode really shows off the fact that, in his original concept, Endeavor was going to be one of the teachers at UA (that part was ditched because it shifted the early power balance too much towards the protagonists, having both #1 and #2 close at hand).
Fun fact: When the stuff in this episode was coming out in the manga, season 4 of the anime began airing. That leads to another fun fact: The manga is around one and a half seasons ahead on average. ( I heard that when season 1 was airing, the summer camp and All Might vs All For One was happening in the manga) So right now stuff for the halfway point of season 7 is probably happening.
They might have enough for a 7th season. It depends on how they handle season 6. (Kind of minor spoilers): The war arc could last all of season 6 if the stretch it out, and the last part of that arc would be a phenomenal way to end the season.

It's just a matter of if they will or not and how they handle the stretch. There's certainly points in the manga that could have been given a bit more time (thinking of a particular handcuff scene - if you know, you know) to not only sink in but also be rounded on. There's a lot of jumping quick between War arc and the arc after, that anime might smooth over a little. I just worry that they'll either slow the pace right down or add unnecessary/unwanted filler. I hope they do well with it, though, because there's parts that deserve a lot of care.

Let's compare, in his first class, All Might got Deku hurt and almost destroyed by Bakugo and didn't explain well how to use One for All amd can't understand Deku's reasoning. Endeavor in his first day as an instructor he gave good tips to control quirks that he doesn't know how to use, he can teach and still do his work without problem and understood Deku's reasoning. Endeavor is better teacher than All Might. Endeavor first told Shoto to use his fire like his ice, he pointed out Bakugo's need of warming up is not a reason to fail and gave Deku a great example of how to use his quirks with a everyday and real life example.

Not sure how they said it in the dub, but in the sub when Deku is explaining Endeavor says " so you're just like us" referring to the myriad of people & heroes whose powers have backfire on their user. He ends up relating to Deku cuz his own power also backfires when he uses it too much. Also here we also see the difference in "quality" of teaching styles between All Might & Endeavor. In the manga you come to realize that Endeavor is a better suited mentor to Deku than All Might. Since One for All came naturally to All Might he never struggled to use his power, so AM is better suited as theory teacher than practical applications. While AM can pass on tips & tricks to fighting style, Endeavor actually understands mechanics & control of powers. He's able to teach Deku to develop his power instead of hoping for the best. Also he understood Dekus rambling which means he can be patient & listen... now that his ego has been checked in a bit. Lol
I shouldn't be up watching this cuz I'm fighting covid rn, but screw it I like being here early to comment. I mentioned awhile ago how applicable this show is to so many parts of life, in my case competition/esports. I'm pretty sure watching this episode was what sparked me to say that. Also I'm glad you seem to be loving the new intro. It's 100% in my top 3 along with the 1st and 2nd openings.
I have always loved your commentary but I was hoping to hear more about your views on hawks changing his view points on students and him purposefully stealing their catch to make them seem more unsterstamatable.
Its difficult with Enji for me. On one hand I recognize that as Endevour he saved so many lives and his abilities and knowledge is extremely precious. On the other, he also commited a crime of child abuse and other forms of abuse towards his wife... Is he trying to change? yes. Do I appreciate it? Yes. But for me personally - I thought long and hard about what he should do so I d be able to forgive him - and came up short. I think what also drives me crazy is the lack of punishment, yes the consequences of his own actions are finally hitting him...but not real punishment for his action was provided...and to me THAT is something that is incorrect with this and THAT world. That people in power are able to keep their careerrs, keep their dreams and goals and lives while doing stuff they d punish others for. For me weirdly Enji is the symbol of why this hero system does not fully work...coz he is just a smuch of a criminal as much as he is a hero...that should not be allowed. (At least in my eyes, for me child abuse is one of worst crimes, a lot worse than some of the petty crimes they are chasing) However weirdly I do nto feel any hate towards his character, I just feel conflicted coz while I do think all of the above, I also know that right now the world needs him....and that in the end he is not a bad person, just a person that made too many mistakes.
There's one thing that just doesn't sit right with me and I think is very immoral. Forcing the schools to start the work study to train the students to fight. They're basically getting ready to draft children. I get that it might be necessary (and it will definitely lead to really good storytelling) but still, it doesn't seem like the "right thing" to do. That commission in charge of this doesn't seem to care what is done as long as the villains are defeated.
It makes me uneasy too but I was sitting there thinking about how they could go about it in a more ethical way but if they informed the kids and their families how serious things were, they'd blow Hawks's cover so *grimaces in hard choices*
The kids have dedicated their lives to hero work. The villains won’t care if they’re full-fledged heroes or just heroes in training; they’ll kill them regardless. So either you train them well to give them the best chance you can or you try to shelter them and wind up risking them getting killed because they can’t defend themselves and you can’t defend them either.
That line Endeavor said to Bakugo about not making it in time to save lives gave me chills the first time and I'm not too sure why. I guess it was like a reality check Also, quick question/suggestion. I know you're going to probably do a Q&A video for MHA and I had an interesting suggestion for it. I was thinking you could rank the different arcs at the end of that video or somewhere and give like overall general thoughts. Do you think that sounds good or would that add too much of a hassle to the process? (If you decide to do it I can list the arcs on one of the videos closer to the end of the season). It was just a thought I had.
Something I fear is going to happen in the future is Endevour is going to be killed off in order to redeem him. Uh...no, no, no, no, no, he had his issues in the past, but ever since the end of last season he's been taking the right steps towards rebuilding the huge bridge he burned. To me, he doesn't deserve death, and i'd say during this season he makes a decision that I found very mature and responsible, showing he does actually care about his family. Maybe just have him get severely injured while protecting his family or maybe lose his Quirk, but death certainly seems a bit much.
If endeavor put a 1/4 of the thought into parenting that he puts into hero work he would be a good father. It's all about priorities. Also random thought: I've been imagining you with tall hair and you don't look half bad.

I hate to say it but Endeavour was a much better teacher/mentor to Deku than All Might. Most of that I think comes from the fact that Endeavour actually thinks a lot and he became this powerful because he keeps learning and training to push his quirks to its up most limit. Meanwhile All Might is more similar to those people who are just naturally good at things (not denying that All Might worked hard too), and in real life those types of people usually makes for horrible teacher.

After this arc, I honestly get more upset with Shoto for not forgiving his father. See, perhaps it's just that I'm a Christian that it is easy for me to forgive others and find unending hatred as disgraceful, but after reading ahead and watching this, I realized that the whole issue between Endeavor and his wife was somewhat blown out of proportion and it was really the perspective of the children that made Endeavor to be perceived as some sort of monster. They don't know why he hit his wife, and only his wife is willing to acknowledge his pain and change. I believe that was what she said at the end of season 4, correct? I promise not so spoil anything regarding the future, but Endeavor only becomes more amazing. I recognize him as Number 1, I respect him as Number 1.
Endeavor my is favourite character but I think Shoto's distaste for him is pretty valid at this point. Considering why he was born and how he was viewed by Endeavor for most of his life, especially considering it's only been around 3 months since he started to change and Shoto has only interacted with him a half dozen times. Plus past the point the anime has covered this far he doesn't really show much resentment towards Endeavor at all which seems well timed to me at least.
What a crap was that. Hawks in that meeting. Jeez...it's obvious League and the new villians are allies right there. Bones killed the emotion for MVA. I repeat MVA is the worst arc adapted in BNH.

Also here we also see the difference in "quality" of teaching styles between All Might & Endeavor. In the manga you come to realize that Endeavor is a better suited mentor to Deku than All Might. Since One for All came naturally to All Might he never struggled to use his power, so AM is better suited as theory teacher than practical applications. While AM can pass on tips & tricks to fighting style, Endeavor actually understands mechanics & control of powers. He's able to teach Deku to develop his power instead of hoping for the best. Also he understood Dekus rambling which means he can be patient & listen... now that his ego has been checked in a bit. Lol

I have always loved your commentary but I was hoping to hear more about your views on hawks changing his view points on students and him purposefully stealing their catch to make them seem more unsterstamatable.
Its difficult with Enji for me. On one hand I recognize that as Endevour he saved so many lives and his abilities and knowledge is extremely precious. On the other, he also commited a crime of child abuse and other forms of abuse towards his wife... Is he trying to change? yes.
Do I appreciate it? Yes. But for me personally - I thought long and hard about what he should do so I d be able to forgive him - and came up short.
I think what also drives me crazy is the lack of punishment, yes the consequences of his own actions are finally hitting him...but not real punishment for his action was provided...and to me THAT is something that is incorrect with this and THAT world. That people in power are able to keep their careerrs, keep their dreams and goals and lives while doing stuff they d punish others for. For me weirdly Enji is the symbol of why this hero system does not fully work...coz he is just a smuch of a criminal as much as he is a hero...that should not be allowed. (At least in my eyes, for me child abuse is one of worst crimes, a lot worse than some of the petty crimes they are chasing) However weirdly I do nto feel any hate towards his character, I just feel conflicted coz while I do think all of the above, I also know that right now the world needs him....and that in the end he is not a bad person, just a person that made too many mistakes.
There's one thing that just doesn't sit right with me and I think is very immoral. Forcing the schools to start the work study to train the students to fight. They're basically getting ready to draft children. I get that it might be necessary (and it will definitely lead to really good storytelling) but still, it doesn't seem like the "right thing" to do. That commission in charge of this doesn't seem to care what is done as long as the villains are defeated.
It makes me uneasy too but I was sitting there thinking about how they could go about it in a more ethical way but if they informed the kids and their families how serious things were, they'd blow Hawks's cover so *grimaces in hard choices*

The kids have dedicated their lives to hero work. The villains won’t care if they’re full-fledged heroes or just heroes in training; they’ll kill them regardless. So either you train them well to give them the best chance you can or you try to shelter them and wind up risking them getting killed because they can’t defend themselves and you can’t defend them either.
That line Endeavor said to Bakugo about not making it in time to save lives gave me chills the first time and I'm not too sure why. I guess it was like a reality check
Also, quick question/suggestion. I know you're going to probably do a Q&A video for MHA and I had an interesting suggestion for it. I was thinking you could rank the different arcs at the end of that video or somewhere and give like overall general thoughts. Do you think that sounds good or would that add too much of a hassle to the process? (If you decide to do it I can list the arcs on one of the videos closer to the end of the season). It was just a thought I had.

Something I fear is going to happen in the future is Endevour is going to be killed off in order to redeem him. Uh...no, no, no, no, no, he had his issues in the past, but ever since the end of last season he's been taking the right steps towards rebuilding the huge bridge he burned. To me, he doesn't deserve death, and i'd say during this season he makes a decision that I found very mature and responsible, showing he does actually care about his family. Maybe just have him get severely injured while protecting his family or maybe lose his Quirk, but death certainly seems a bit much.

I hate to say it but Endeavour was a much better teacher/mentor to Deku than All Might. Most of that I think comes from the fact that Endeavour actually thinks a lot and he became this powerful because he keeps learning and training to push his quirks to its up most limit. Meanwhile All Might is more similar to those people who are just naturally good at things (not denying that All Might worked hard too), and in real life those types of people usually makes for horrible teacher.

Its still an excuse even if its true. I see Endeavor's point being that Bakugo shouldnt accept that as a limitation so easily. Since Bakugo already knows its harder to sweat, he should be more proactive about it. Theres always room to inprove

How dare you call Hawks a villain?
After this arc, I honestly get more upset with Shoto for not forgiving his father. See, perhaps it's just that I'm a Christian that it is easy for me to forgive others and find unending hatred as disgraceful, but after reading ahead and watching this, I realized that the whole issue between Endeavor and his wife was somewhat blown out of proportion and it was really the perspective of the children that made Endeavor to be perceived as some sort of monster. They don't know why he hit his wife, and only his wife is willing to acknowledge his pain and change. I believe that was what she said at the end of season 4, correct? I promise not so spoil anything regarding the future, but Endeavor only becomes more amazing. I recognize him as Number 1, I respect him as Number 1.
Endeavor my is favourite character but I think Shoto's distaste for him is pretty valid at this point. Considering why he was born and how he was viewed by Endeavor for most of his life, especially considering it's only been around 3 months since he started to change and Shoto has only interacted with him a half dozen times. Plus past the point the anime has covered this far he doesn't really show much resentment towards Endeavor at all which seems well timed to me at least.
What a crap was that. Hawks in that meeting. Jeez...it's obvious League and the new villians are allies right there. Bones killed the emotion for MVA.
I repeat MVA is the worst arc adapted in BNH.
