Great list! Garter Snakes are so underappreciated in our hobby. They are so adorable, active and inquisitive I love opening up one of my garter tanks and having them all come zooming up to to say hi/check you out (really they are probably just wanting to see if you have food, LOL). They are so great!

I've caught thousands of Garters in my life, the first snake I ever caught was a garter, they are so common all over the country and are usually the 1st wild snake anyone catches so when it comes time to build a collection or have a pet snake, people look for something that's different and new and exotic and stuff! Plus they probably remember getting musked on by every garter they ever caught!!!!!

I have to agree - there's nothing boring about cresties. I absolutely ❤️ them!!!

  • @Dysvalence
    @Dysvalence 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

For apartments this is helpful, especially on what doesn't smell (top5 vid when?), but in dorms the temps and humidity can swing dangerously and I'd go for something more bulletproof than cresties or frogs. Would also suggest a seperate minifridge for brumating the rubber boas and storing feeders, but if you could do that then Dione's rats or pyromelanas might be better

Love this list, one day I want to just fill a 4x2x3 with garter snakes. They come is so many stunning colors and patterns. I think you easily could make a second list, and even a guide on how to save space. I got custom PVCs made so I can stack them, and it takes up one wall of 2ftx8ft but its 6 terrariums, and could even be more but I spoiled my babies so even my leo has a 4x2x2 xD

I think it's important to note that cresties do make noise. They have a call that sounds a bit like plucking a rubber band. Super quiet though which makes them great for apartments or communal living.

Adam thanks for bringing up the Rubber Boas, I have caught 3 of these in the Sierras of Northern California where I was raised, and I have to admit that even though I've been a "herper" from age 5, starting with Tree Frogs and Leopard Frogs and Tadpoles, I did not catch any of the Rubber Boas while helping! I was always doing something else, the first time I was 7 and walking down a trail to the local creek to do some trout fishing and it was right there in the trail. The second was when my dad and I were coming home from at trip to Texas and I had to pee, and we pulled over at a convenient spot on the dirt road we were on and I stepped out of the car and there it was about 3feet away he almost got pissed on, I was 15 or 16 then, then about ten years ago in my 50's while leaving a restaurant at the outskirts of town there's one at the back of the parking lot near our car! None of the Rubber Boas I've caught and none that I've ever seen anyone else with, captive born or wild showed any inclination toward biting at all, the wild ones I caught were easy handling from the start, as well as being easy to feed. Once they were all the rage but now you don't hear much about them and they are awesome snakes totally different from any other Boa!! They are fantastic pets and animal ambassadors!!

  • @SpitefulJD

I mean ngl as someone going into college, the main limiter is space, and a solid amount of the species on this list are space heavy, garters especially being communal and generally requiring to be with other members of their species, I was expecting more frogs like male pacman frogs and banded bullfrogs, or viper geckos, whites tree and cresties are the only one I don't see a huge space demand with but dorms often also don't have Aircon so they'd need a external Aircon for hotter months

This was concerning and because 2/5 are not "beginner" friendly, and cresties minimum is 18x18x24, kids don't need to have the idea that cohabbing is okay in *below* the minimum for one. 😅 it's risky in general but in that small of an enclosure? It's asking for consequences 🥲

i love ur videos! im 15 and your collection and passion for reptiles inspires me and i actually have quite a collection myself i take care of 5 lizards, 2 tarantulas and 3 frogs. im lucky enough to have parents who like animals and who let me keep all these pets. you inspired me to make my crested geckos and frogs beautiful planted bioactive terrariums and i also have a black and white tegu with a planted custom enclosure. i hope to one day be able to have the space for as many pets as you have. you also have taught me a lot about reptiles and keeping reptiles and i forget if you’ve talked about these yet but if you haven’t talked about shinisaurus crocodilurus aka the chinese crocodile lizard. they are amazing lizards and definitely aren’t for everyone especially people who dont want to spend $1000 on a reptile but i still think you should talk about them because of how unique they are and to bring awareness to the fact that they are critically endangered in the wild and the reptile community should know about these so more people can start breeding projects so that even if they go extinct in the wild there will still be some in captivity. i’m also hoping that we can save them and maybe one day bring their wild population up to tens of thousands.

Adam! You should totally add a green iguana to the list! Super tame, don’t hit puberty when they’re 18-24 months old and become super unpredictable or aggressive. Also, just keep them in a 10 gallon enclosure, reptiles only grow to the size of the “cage” they live in 👍🏼😃😃😃😄😆
On a serious note, I think green anoles would be a good reptile for this list

Fun fact for Ontario, here, pet ownership is regulated by the municipality or city (with the exception of federally regulated animals), and there are a lot of towns that only regulate what is federally regulated(namely pitbulls and orca whales)! Gotta go with a hognose. Everyone loves a hog, and as long as you get a captive bred one that's eating frozen thawed mice, it's the perfect critter for a small space. And if you go with the tri color hog, everyone will be super impressed by their bright, vibrant colors (once they get over the initial shock of seeing the "coral snake"). Maybe a gold dust day gecko, or if you want a ridiculously underrated species: eastern gray rat snake. People never give them a fair chance, but they're just such a fun species, especially as babies with the googly eyes. They do need a bit more space (4x2x2, same as a dwarf boa), but if that's your only pet, I mean... that's not a huge ask. They're also very enthusiastic climbers. I gave my male some dried grapevine to climb on and he spends his whole day climbing up and around and all over it and hides in the fake leaves on it. He also has a cave hide thing that sticks on the side of the cage off the ground that he likes to sleep in at night.

Yo, I am looking for a california king snake, I want to know an enclosure size should I get, when I have done research it says a 36 x 18 x 16 but I want to know what you think. Maybe you can make a care guide. Amazing video btw.

I was going to get a rubber boa, but in the US it can be illegal since they are a native species. Instead I got a kenyan sand boa who is a university approved ESA and is allowed to be in the dorms with me. I find it hilarious because housing loves him more than me!

Definitely White's tree frogs!! I cohabitate 20 in 3 exoterras 36x18x36 and I have not had any issues. I have a lot of hiding places and plants. Feeding them is a comedy show.

I really those videos. I wonder if a pictus gecko would be a good one for this video.

"In captivity they're not going to musk on you most likely" If you own a garter, it will musk on you at some point. They're also fast af, so you better hope they don't get out or you're gonna be playing catch the speed demon. Just being real here, I've got four and I love them, but I would not recommend them in a dorm.

For a crested gecko should you get a feeder that connects higher up in the tank

I have been leaning towards smaller species within my temperature range because I already have 3 larger enclosures in my room.

I’d like to suggest Chinese cave geckos, Pac-Man frogs 🐸 and Vietnamese mossy 🐸 frogs. These guys don’t require the heating and lights like most reptiles do and the mossy frogs and cave geckos like the cooler temps. Plus the mossy frogs 🐸 enclosure can look pretty cool with them needing the bottom of their enclosure a water feature .

Some cresties won’t eat insects. But if you dip it in their favorite mix they’ll usually take it…it’s like a crested geckos version of a chicken nugget…😅

You could put lepidodactylus lugubris in the next one, they are really easy for temperature, food and not loud

11:03 You made a mistake. You said 18x18x12. You meant to say 18x18x18. A lot of people say 18x18x24 is the minimum for an adult crested gecko. That's what I have mine in.

If you search for "Thamnophis sirtalis kaufen" you can find "Thamnophis sirtalis Globoli"... Insanity aside, I think "Thamnophis Züchter" instead of Strumpfbandnatter gets you better results for some reason. You'll have to fight your way through the madness that is "why hire someone when I can do it for free?" German pet breeder web design...

Hay Adam, what would be your advice for a guy who wants to start breeding, is in high school, has parents who don’t want another animal, and does not have a tun of money, what would be your advice for starting out? Also love the video.
