The first few years we were not allowed colour, LOL. I have an ivory black; but use French ultramarine and burnt umber for darks or neutral greys, and or add colour too it. The procreate colour wheels certainly makes the process easier.
Thank you Mikko. Very informative. Not using white or black in digital painting works great. Harder to do with traditional media. Nice advise with smudge tool. The Mikko Rill is still rocking; the only brush I use now.
+Doug Hilborn when I was in art school painting with oils all day: nobody in the class was using black to paint because I’m pretty sure the teachers would have (at least) mentally slapped a student caught in such crime XD Even today I don’t really open my black tube of colour when painting with oils but I have to confess that I do in fact own a tube of black colour. Back in the day this would have been controversial lol
Thanks for all of the great videos you take the time to make, including this one. You’re videos are underrated in my opinion. I hope people appreciate you.
This is a very good exercise in that it’s not so strict that it would feel daunting. The limits are just strong enough to make one dig deeper into the full spectrum of the hues you choose to use.
dont know if anyone gives a damn but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times then you can watch pretty much all the new series on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my brother these days xD
I have been watching your videos for a little longer than a week and I’m really impressed with ur art I have been drawing for my whole life and I’ve always wanted to do art until these recent years where I’ve lost motivation and stopped caring about art but I’ve used procreate pocket on my phone on and off for years creating simple wallpapers or whatever comes to mind but seeing your videos I’ve loved your art I’ve tried to replicate the painting process somewhat and with that style I can see a future in art which im very grateful for you for showing me that
So informative! I would've been saved a lot of heartache had I seen this video a year ago, I learned not to add black or white the hard way 😂. The advice about cool vs warm light was eye opening, Thank you! I will definitely be trying out the blue analagous pallet! :)
Hey! I just want to tell you that these videos helped me so much! I understand colour theory so much better now! Thank you for guiding me on the right path! You earned a new sub!~ PS. My mom and I watch your painting videos together! She really enjoys your stuff!
Hey Mikko ❤ I saw you in a livestream talking about art teachers, then recommending this video, Im new to art, but I want to learn correctly, however I live on a farm in the middle of nowhere and only have internet as a vector for learning. What art teachers or content creators can you point me to? Practise doesnt make perfect, practise makes permanent... Kind regards, Love your content.
Thanks for making this video. So very informative and helpful, now I just need to remember to implement more of this in my illustration work. Really glad to discover your channel!
Thank you! Comments like these make all the work that goes into these worth it. And honestly I kind of like making videos now. In the beginning it was so intimidating because there’s so much to learn in the whole TH-cam thing.
Thank you for the vote of confidence. This is the one that I always refer to in my other videos. Not because it's sexy or well edited but when my students in a concept art class learn that light and shadow logic part in the middle of this their paintings get so much better it's insane. That is by far the most important thing to learn about colour and mood or painting in general if one wants to improve, that's why I mention this video so often.
hey mikko! i was wondering.. i watched this video like many times and i get what you mean by dont use black or white to lighten or darken the color but i also find it a lil bit confusing.. that means i cant use lighter or darker shades of some color? i only need to choose one shade and then just change the saturation and hue? but what if i need the contrast? i mean i understand it but i actually dont hahaha :c rn im doing this fantasy forest piece and i tried your blue analogous palette, as a quick sketch it looks good with all the blue, green and purple shades but i again get confused somehow, what shade to use for what exactly.. i hope this wasnt too confusing for u also c':
If you look at the examples the light and shadows have value contrast. What you shouldn’t be doing ever is mixing a light or shadow colour by only adding black or white. The hue always changes when going from light to shadows.
I am shocked after watching this video. My art teacher (actual painting) said to add white and black to lighten or darken my painting. I am very sad now because I got thrown out of class for keep on saying this couldn’t be right and why wasn’t it working.
I've banned a lot of people from this channel it probably upsets some so whatever. What they don't know however that likes and dislikes are actually GOOD for the channel visibility in algorithm. This comes directly from a youtube partner manager who said in an interview that engagement is engagement. Doesn't matter if it's a like dislike good or bad comment. All bump up my videos in relation to the competition so I'm just happy people keep pressing any of those buttons =)
@@angrymikko same question remains: why would someone behave so badly, that he has to be banned on an art education/inspiration channel?? It's not like you would talk about sensitive topics, you mostly talk about art and sometimes do a three minute rant.. Either way, thanks for keeping your community "clean" :)
I love all of your commentary. You have so much to share with the art community. Thank you for sharing with us😊
Thank you. You put a lot of information into this. It was helpful.
Yes it is helpful! Listening to how you see art is like a warm artistic embrace. It makes art inviting even though it is a difficult host.

I have been struggling with color theory so this video could not have had better timing! Thank you!

Thank you for this incredibly helpful video on color!
My pleasure I think I need to do more videos like this one in the future.

It is so funny when explaining warm and cool color...
Cheer~~~comparable in certain respects, typically in a way which makes clearer the nature of the things compared.???

Is this also work on background anime?
No
Amazing! May I use the swatch (for reference purpose) in my video.
Sure.
@@angrymikko Thank you so much
Nice
I'm new at drawing and this was really helpful, thanks! :>
Omg I love you thank you soooo much!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
All artists should watch this video before using color!!
who in their right mind would dislike this vid.?!?

The color wheel disagrees with you. The masters said there were two colors they could not paint without, they were white and black.
Not colours, not on the colour wheel so I think there’s no drama between me and that wheel.
