This song is about Eric Clapton’s love for his friend George Harrison’s wife Pattie Boyd of whom would later divorce George and marry Eric. Also on guitar was Duane Allman from The Allman Brothers. He would die in a motorcycle accident a year later. Lynyrd Skynyrd would later dedicate “Freebird” to Duane Allman.

I was 7 years old when I heard "Layla" for the first time in 1971, and it made my brain explode. I've been a devoted Clapton fan ever since. Duane Allman played slide, while EC squeezes the strings. I was well into my 20s before I realized which guitar was which on this song, but it doesn't matter because it's terrific. A video of Clapton performing "Old Love" in 1999 is on TH-cam. In addition to killer guitar, EC always surrounds himself with excellent musicians and the keyboard solo on this performance is other-wordly. I hope you have a chance to watch it: th-cam.com/video/O_j9KEjrY4o/w-d-xo.html. The performance was a benefit for the Crossroads Center, and one camera person had the job of following Eric's hands...where he finds notes is truly amazing.
I can't tell you how much fun it is to watch you two react to songs you haven't heard before! It makes me feel like a kid again.

When I was young, I used to listen to this and think about girls who didn't like me...
Now that I'm old and over all that, I have different feelings about it. It makes me think about how very much we all neglect to show proper affection for each other, of any kind. There is so much negativity and hate in the world, so much nastiness, so much attitude, so much animosity, so many dysfunctional relationships that are never going to be repaired, so many people we've had to let go because they have closed the door on us, so many people we've closed the door on, so many people in the world who are all unhappy with each other.
... This song is that feeling, of beholding all this, and just letting the sadness of it pass through you, and accepting it, and still saying to yourself "I am not a hateful person. I refuse to let this world make me an angry, hateful person."

I am fascinated by Pattie Boyd, for whom this song was written. She was married to George Harrison at the time, and George wrote songs for her as well ( "If I Needed Someone" "Something" and "For You Blue"). When she left George and married Clapton, he wrote "Wonderful Tonight" for her. She must be the most rock-inspiring person in the world. (She's divorced from both of them and if you read her bio, neither treated her as well as the songs would suggest.)

Eric inducted to R&R hall of fame THREE times. Early days .. Clapton is God was spray painted on city wall (as you saw in video) he hated that - couldn’t live up to it .. but his nickname “Slowhand” is certainly fitting ... he bows down to the blues masters from the S. a little backstory though: george harrison, the guitarist from the beatles, was married to a beautiful british model, pattie boyd. george and eric clapton were friends, and eventually, eric fell for pattie. he couldnt date his friends wife though, so he started dating her sister (what a mess). that obviously didn’t work out, and they broke up. he then tried declaring his love for pattie, but she was not interested. he then wrote this song, layla, about her, and played it for her at a party. this song is “credited” with being the reason he won her over - she divorced george and started dating eric. but she told him that she would only stay with him if he stopped doing hard drugs.
he stopped doing drugs, but he just replaced it with booze, becoming a raging alcoholic, frequently beating pattie. he also had an affair with another woman, which resulted in a child. this child later fell out of the window from a scyscraper, killing him. this caused him to write the famous song “tears in heaven”.
obviously, pattie soon divorced him, sick of the constant abuse. in a weird twist of fate, george harrison eventually got “revenge” on eric - by having an affair with the woman who had erics child - the one who died.

To many people forget the greatness of Duane Allman who died in his early 20s. Check out early Allman brothers and Blind Faith, Cream.

I thank God for marrying a southern man who loves music, I was introduced to the Allman Bros, early on and understood that Duane was a stand alone artist in his youth. I appreciate that Eric knew genius when he saw it. He also caught Stevie Ray Vaughn live and left after half an hour, realizing that he'd seen a man channeling the music universe through his guitar.

All that beautiful slide guitar work is done by Duane Allman, founder of the Allman Brothers Band.
