"Waterloo Sunset" is one the most gorgeous pop songs ever written. I cry with melancholic joy (appropriately oxymoronic) every time I listen to it. Yes, Ray is a genius.

Ray Davies is maybe the greatest songwriter as he catches people's humanity, all the tragic-comic quirks they have. Ray does this though with incredible insight, empathy, & compassion. The Kinks as a band can play primal rock to exquisitely beautiful ballads that make nearly all the Kinks albums klassic gems.

24:00 Had just bought Anthology (mp3)before seeing your video - 5 CDs' worth of the Kream (on the Pye!) of the Kinks. What an artifact! Ray is our national treasure, the Dickens of our time. Dave, the original punk rocker.

I was born in ‘68 - so I’m from the ‘60’s. For me, at this stage in my life The Kinks are the best band to come out of the UK in the ‘60’s.
With The Kinks it’s a slow burn. As much as I love the Beatles and the Stones I just don’t listen to them as much as The Kinks.
The Kinks have not been over exposed to me. The banishment from the USA was in the long term a blessing in disguise. And I say that as someone born and raised in Belfast Ireland.
The comp that brought me in was a cheapo called The Complete Collection on the Castle Communications label from 1991 covering the PYE era. I’ve used it as a template for my own playlists by the Kinks.
What can I say about the Kinks that has not already been said? The original band was special beyond words.
My interest so far ends in 1971 with some much more to explore.
“Face to Face” still sounds modern to my ears and is my favorite album by them.
Yes, Ray is amazing - and so is Dave, f##k the whole band is amazing. Just listen to the BBC Sessions album! Stunning!
    Love them.
    God bless The Kinks!
    Love them so much.🎉

One of the greatest bands ever. I like lots of 70s/80s kids educated myself on music via my parents record collection. The first kinks comp I heard was part of a box set by readers digest titled superstars of the 60s and 70s it had a number of records inside and one was side A the kinks and flip over you the trigger in side B. It maybe falls outside of your compilation list. I’ll watch and see.❤

I was born in '67, so I didn't really discover The Kinks until 8-9 years later. Most would think that was due to anything they recorded at that point, but it was really discovering my mother's brothers/sisters' collection of old 60's singles. I discovered The Beatles etc the same way! So I learned to love the 60's version of the Kinks as a kid, but I never explored further. And then the Come Dancing song, or whichever from that record, hit me in the 80's! And still I didn't worry about what happened in-between... Until those Nice Price records started to appear in the 80's, and I personally started to have enough money to buy those. "Misfits" was the record that really blew my mind as a teenager, and from there I went on to have eventually get all of them. However, the early 70's albums were introduced to me in the middle of the 80's by a classmate. I actually love Soap Opera, but the Preservation Act 1&2 albums are the ones I prefer to never listen to (a few songs excluded...).

I can't say that I was ever a huge Kinks fan but Arthur, Lola and Muswell Hillbillies is a fantastic trilogy. I know Percy was in between Lola and Muswell, but that was a soundtrack so I don't count it. Great video Mazzy!

Hey Mazzy, thanks for this video. Tempted to get a vinyl version of "The Journey" though the CD is half the price. 🙄 I only own one solitary Kinks compilation on CD called the Ultimate Collection, a 25 track release. I don't have any of their LP's and just a handful of 45's. I remember your video of the Kinks Mono Box but sadly that's hard to find now. Time to rectify that methinks. Cheers 👍

Great video, Mazzy. One compilation that you didn't mention, but is well worth seeking out, is "(The Kinks Are) Well Respected Men" from 1987. This UK release compiled all of the Pye-era non-album songs, in their original mixes. It's a great sounding double LP, and is a perfect complimentary release if you already have all of the studio albums of that era.

Whenever anyone asks me Beatles or Stones? I always snort back The Kinks!! Though I have at various times in my 40 + years of life, obsessed over, absorbed and collected all the usual suspects of the Brit Invasion, The Kinks and maybe The Who are the ones that for me, endure and mean the most. My favourite comp is the 6 CD box Picture Book (2008). Admittedly, it has a few head-scratchingly inferior ''alternative'' mixes of some crucial 60's era singles, but otherwise one of the very few (if any others exist?) comps that fully span 1960's - early 90's.

  • @Neal_Schier

I freely admit to being a low brow music listener so i very much appreciate compilations as it is often/usually the "best of" the band's output.
Since the mid seventies i always thought on most albums there were only a few songs that were really worthwhile. Not always true of course, but all too often for my taste.

"The Essential Kinks" has 48 tracks with liner notes written by David Bowie. That one shouldn't have been allowed to go out of print, but I guess you can still get it used. So many brilliant songs! Celluloid Heroes is a personal favorite. Bowie of course had good taste.

Of course being of a similar age to you I heard and liked the singles that I heard on the radio through the years by the Kinks but I never got into them, Recently I bought an album called The ultimate collection off a stall on the market in Salisbury where I live which is run by a bloke who gets CD's from people who sell their collections for peanuts and I have been playing that double CD album which I got for a fiver almost constantly and I can honestly say that that album is now one of my favourites, You are right Mazi the Kinks are one of the best bands ever.

i've been trying to get to this all day and so far am only 3 minutes in. by minute 22 i expect you to honor ailing president who oversaw first 4 years of their arista period by negotiating peace talks between ray and dave and getting them back in the studio. i've joked on this topic before but it isn't a joke. they've survived strokes and stabbings and while i never knew "when i turn off the living room light", the performers of "father christmas" need to record together again. this is not someone saying bruce springsteen owes his fans such and such. i'm not saying "do it before you pass on!" do it because after the beatles (no offence to mick and keith or to pete and roger) but you are the best and norman more than any brit i know can make it happen. now i'm going to watch the video. thanks for making it.

The Kinks are one of my favorites of the British Invasion but always that number 3 or 4 on my top 10 list. I don’t know why that is. My favorite comp will always be Kronikles. The Kinks absolutley DO NOT need any more compilations. At this point, it's beyond ridiculous. However, I like the super deluxe box sets, although it looks like they won't be releasing those anymore, as they didn't even bother for Muswell Hillbillies or Everybody's in Show-biz. I would also definitely buy a remastered release of Kink Kronikles on CD or SACD.

I'm English (in London). Yeah I bought "The Journey" a few weeks ago, on both vinyl and CD. I had them waiting on pre-order and the release date written down on my hang-up kitchen calendar.
If I could only have one Kinks single it would be "See My Friend". No 'S' added. I don't like it when things like that are changed around, they should leave it as it is. Anyway, the singular implies greater intensity and mystery of a personal relationship. So it's better. If I'd been living next door to Raymondo at the time I would have given him the benefit of my advice and told him to make it singular in the first place.
PS. I would never refer to Keith Richard in the plural, either. For Godsake leave it all alone 😩

    Hi Massy,
After the Beatles & Stones the Kinks are definitely in my top 5 along with the Who and Small Faces. As a UK ex-pat from London living a stones-throw away from Waterloo (now living in SF Bay Area for the past 30 years), Waterloo Sunset really chokes me up every time I hear it. If you ever stood on Waterloo Bride during dusk you know what he means about Waterloo sunset. Fantastic song!
You got me thinking of Kinks rarities and I thought of single I bought as a kid that Ray did for a classic 70’s TV show called Budgie (starting Adam Faith). Ray wrote and sung the theme tune for the 2nd season under the guise of Cold Turkey. It was released on Pye records and the B-Side was the theme tune to Sesame Street. When they released the deluxe version of Muswell Hillbillies they included a demo instrumental version, but for some reason not a version with lyrics. The intro really reminds me of Animal Farm. Link below to Budgie TV show. It’s worth watching for the intro: www.dailymotion.com/video/x8axfb4
