I’ve just found this video clip! Quite a “blast from the past”. I was living and working in Glasgow at this time and came down especially to photograph the train.
That's what takes the time, converting vhs to digital for YT and also running through all those 3 hour tapes. I'm still finding material I'd forgotten about Mike
Thanks Bob, problem now is some of the older footage has been quite shakey so I do quite a bit of editing, especially on the older vhs tapes. Did you have a camera in " those days " ? TTFN Mike
@@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways thanks Mike. I love old steam engines, but I'm a "Normie" when it comes to how the rail network has to be used. As a boy I used to be taken to watch the trains (early 60s) and, as a special 'treat', stand on the pedestrian bridge over the line when a train came along to get covered in smoke. Happy days.
I remember this day, was watching at Treherbert. Pity there don't seem to be many specials in the Valley's these days.
The guy flapping at 6:09 is named and unshamed as Byron Jenkins.
Travelled on this special from central to Merthyr with my late dad who was a fireman at Merthyr shed and later a guard on the rhymney line

Why is the train sometimes driven tender first?
Because there are no turntables on Network Rail. Diesel locos have cabs at both ends, so no need to turn ok?
