- Ryan Garcia says he is "done" with boxing - at least for now. While appearing on X on Thursday, June 20, the 25-year-old announced that he would be retiring from the sport, writing in a tweet. "The sad part is I was a great boxer and I entertained and knocked people out. I'm sad because I [love] boxing. Praying for everyone and I hope everyone has a good life. Ryan followed up with a series of tweets later that day. In one of his tweets, he wrote, "I'm officially retired" but added in a separate tweet, "It's okay, I'm retired, I'll be back in a year [sic]." In another tweet, Ryan wrote, "I'm retired, so I'll be back from retirement for a year." Earlier this month, the boxer was arrested on suspicion of property damage at the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills, California. According to BBC Sport, Beverly Hills police were called to the property after reports of an "intoxicated person". "It was determined that Mr. Garcia was a registered guest of the hotel and had caused damage to guest rooms and hallways," it was reported. "Hotel management requested Garcia's arrest for property damage. He was arrested and transported by the Beverly Hills Fire Department to a local hospital for medical treatment." The arrest comes weeks after Ryan tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs before his fight with Devin Haney. In a series of recent tweets, Ryan shared a statement from his team, stating that he "fell victim to substance contamination, with levels measured in the billions and trillions of grams, that did not provide any advantage in the ring." "Ryan, with his legal team, has resolved this matter and firmly maintains the truth: he never knowingly took a banned substance," the statement read. "It is simply not in his nature." In addition, the statement also indicated that the athlete will "continue to elevate the sport and will be actively involved in advocating for reform. We hope future changes in our system will address issues like this.".
