    Absolutely beautiful awesome mating display. Amazing how much chromatophore control these fish have .. really cool .. I wish the video would have been longer 👍👍 some much cichlid like behavior from these fish

      I wish it was longer as well. I was surprised that I was able to get as much as I did. I just briefly saw them bickering and was excited to see them continue for me.
      They do have a lot of cichlids behavior without all the aggression and territorial issues that come with cichlids. They seem to only really care about their own species. Plus they don’t dig and get along better with plants than most cichlids, which is another plus in my eyes.

    If I lived in the USA I would order these fish in a flash. I'm so glad you're breeding and highlighting this species. They deserve a lot more attention. I'll follow your project with great interest.

      And I was lucky enough that I could collect mine rather than trying to find a seller of them. There are so many native fish in the US that would make amazing aquarium fish if only people would find them and highlight them.
      If you live in Europe I know there are a lot of elassoma aficionados there that might have some available depending on where in Europe.
      I also just heard good news from a friend that I gave 16 that he has found baby fry already. So hopefully mine will start breeding soon as well.

      Wish we could order them here in the US! They are hard to come by. Usually you have to find a local breeder

      @@taylortisaac Hopefully I can start to change that with some successful spawning of them.

      @@TheAquariumLibrary that’d be cool. It’ll have to be a LOT to supply the major online retailers though! Haha.

      At this time I am not trying to supply major online retailers. I think I’ll have enough people from YT that will want them that I wouldn’t have to start wholesaling them for a while.

      I went and wild collected them. Unfortunately I don't know of many people keeping them, let along breeding them. I've been wanting to breed them but just haven't had the time currently.

    Gorgeous!!! I just found your channel while searching for native fish keepers. Are there any other native fish keeping channels that you can recommend?
    I do not have any active aquariums at the moment, but I am thinking about setting one back up and stocking it with some species that I catch locally on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Maybe some Heterandria formosa and some Elassoma. Our local species is E. zonatum.
    What are some native species or topics that you would like to see videos of? I might try to start my own channel.

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There a very few other channels that are keeping and interested in natives unfortunately. The problem is most people are unfamiliar with them and there is little interest in them, in my opinion. SC Fish Keeping is one that comes to mind and Cold Water Aquatics is another. But both of these guys keep the larger species and not any of the fun and small species that would be good for aquariums.
      I’d love to just seek other people keeping native tanks. NANFA is a good resource as well. They have a Facebook page and a website. North American Native fish association.

    This actually puts Amazonian fish right to shame not to mention nearly all freshwater species in terms of displays. The depressing thing to learn that everyone should know is they have an incredibly short life cycle that lasts barely over a year. Which means if you wish to keep them long you best know how to breed them as well. Maybe we can create a longer lived breed over time. I do wish they lived longer.

    How many do you recommend to have in one aquarium? and male to female ratio? To see all the interesting behavior.

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That really depends on the size of the aquarium and how many line of site blocks you have.

      You could have a lot in that tank. In my 27 gallon (102 L) cube I have probably 25 CPDs. I’d say you could go for 50 or so in that tank easily if it is well planted and has lots of hiding spots.
