Ideally our wardrobe should be such that we aren't thinking so much about our clothes, so we can get on with our lives! I had an epiphany when, years ago, my daughter gifted me with a financial gift with specific instructions to splurge on myself. I logged onto Eileen Fisher, bought myself a summer capsule and haven't looked back. You are so right about quality, comfort, and authentic style. EF happens to check all the boxes for me. I buy mostly from them now, and second hand stores. Liberation! I always have something to wear, need very little, and rarely think little about my clothes except the joy I get in wearing them.
I haven't watched yet, but a month ago I lost my curated wardrobe of 50ish years to a forest fire. To rebuild it is daunting. And many items are no longer replaceable. So I am re-starting my wardrobe while mourning the favorite items I'll never see again. I know this community understands.
Ahhhh that is horrible! I'm so sorry to hear that! Then you are truly "starting" from scratch. Well hopefully this video, my past videos and videos coming up will help you. Let us know how it goes and if you have any questions.
@@EmilyWheatley Thank you. I had really honed my style in the past few years so I think that is helping. I've watched your videos for a couple of years now and have gotten value from them. I'll check in with my journey as it goes.
I am so sorry you are going through that! I was once evacuated for a forest fire for 3 weeks - plenty of time to do all of the mental gymnastics - ugh. Our house did not burn down (our property and surroundings did). I got to the place that I was learning to embrace the place of a clean slate, that I was undefined. I was lucky enough to return to my house and belongings, but I will tell you after that I did a severe declutter to GET TO that place of fresh start. But I certainly have so much sympathy for what you are going through. It is a sudden, violent, out of control, heartbreak in so many ways. Sending tons of good energy that you will recover stronger and will reap silver linings as you move forward. I feel for you. I really, really do. A unique experience that very, very few people (including me) can fully empathize with.
I’m retired and thought I was too old to follow your styling. Yet, your videos kept popping up on my feed and I kept watching them, admiring your style, loving some of the pieces for myself, and enjoying the "entertainment" factor of your videos. That’s a lot of hard work on your part! After viewing this video and hearing your timeless, wise advice, I’m hitting the subscribe button. Oh, and that Quince sweater just might be showing up on my doorstep. Thanks so much!
Oh my goodness. I just love LOVE your video quality. The music, the creativity, the style. Enjoying these new videos so much! And, great lessons learned.
Your new approach to filming and telling stories is amazingly creative and appealing - most importantly, you look like you’re enjoying it! Good for you! I look forward to your content and inspiration!
Absolutely love your edgy style!! 😊 Please do not change. Your style advice is spot on. Have to say… I really like the sleeveless turtleneck you’re wearing!
The videography & music - splendid. And the idea of a classic base & adding on one’s own style… hmmm! & fluidity …yes! Great video - interested now in the To Be Continued … Best, Lynne
Classics and classical music! A change from when I first subscribed to your channel. Love all your tips. I need to start over with retirement and weight gain.😢 Love blazers but sometimes too formal. Looking for a non-frumpy sweater alternative.
Blazers are too formal for my lifestyle as well. I have found a structured "sweater jacket" fit the feel without being as formal. JCrew has some gorgeous ones. I usually thrift, but they have a few options out right now in stores
Great advice there. I’m really culling so many of my clothes. I’ve always shopped just buying what I like and as usual have nothing to wear. Your ideas are brilliant at bringing everything together making like much easier. I have only just found my style at almost 65 yrs old. Basically a crisp shirt and jeans mainly. Oh and I do love a black merino wool polo neck. Thanks Emily for showing. X
wow amazing Emily.....I am rediscovering my certain style after many years!!!(never too late!)...great advice patience is a big plus I agree... Love your new haircut!!!!..you have such delicate facial features to be able to wear such an amazing liberating hairstyle!!!!..Love your videos...thank you so much....from Margaret in South Australia ....across the Pond!!!!!!
I love this idea. I just wish I could get it to work with my boho style. I like edgy, rock'n'roll looks but tend to be very dress oriented. So I'm trying to glean your ideas into my own style.
Boho can also be cleaner and more minimal ( no patterns ) and therefore a bridge to edgy and rock n roll. Either boho dress plus edgy accessories or edgy outfit with more boho style accessories. The colour choices will also help you bridge the 2 styles.
I am a total bohemian in the hot months in Portugal. I get tired of it after a full summer and now I want simpler look. It’s fun to change it up through the seasons. It’s too hot for layers most of the year, so I look forward to the chance to wear my separates instead of the summery dresses. I add more solid colors, a little more structure, but still wear my fun prints in smaller pieces or my print dresses with a solid shirt or sweater over it to tone it down and pull it a little closer to my body.
ugh patience! YES, I have struggled with that for so long. I've ended up replacing many basics that I got in a hurry. Doing better now, but have to stop myself regularly and remind myself that none of this is urgent or "necessary" to survive. I managed to live without the perfect T-shirt until now, I can survive another however long it takes.
I find that I add more color in the summer months. I love jewel tones in the winter but I always find my way back to neutrals. In particular charcoal, navy, black and camel. Because I have a seated body type, as much as I love blazers, they just don't work well on my body type. In the past year I've found that cropped sweaters work really well for me. I'm in love with the Quince boyfriend crewneck neck. It's shorter in the front and a bit longer in the back. Perfect! I have it in black, navy, and the agave. I'll be ordering their cropped cardigans next. The cotton and the cashmere.
Love your videos! This one is absolutely beautiful and eloquently styled and said! ♥ Love your passion and elegance with a dash of edgy grit! Your a real peach!♥ Thank you! Always looking forward to your next video!
A gorgeous video thank you so much! I I was thinking about you yesterday wearing my COH Charlotte jeans which are just about as great as it gets. I bought them in blue and black and truthfully nothing looks better. Many thanks for the pro tip !

Thank you so much!! And yes, I was a visual merchandiser. Loved it! Only reason I stopped was to be a freelance videographer. I really appreciate your supportive message :-)
Hi Emily! Loved this! How did you come to decide your color palette? What are your thoughts on dressing for your " season"? Is this a consideration for you?
I chose black, white, gray and denim as my color palette because it's what I always felt best in. I never felt comfortable with a lot of color. I think dressing for you season is a great concept and can real help inspire a lot of people. For me, I sort of work on the belief that you should wear what 'you' feel best in. Technically I don't think my color tone is suppose to wear black, but it my absolute favorite color to wear. I may have to do a video on this because I get this question a lot. Thanks so much for your comment!!!
I’ve always hated button down shirts because of their stiffness. I decided to listen to you and just bought one from Djerf Avenue that looks perfectly slouchy - the On the Go shirt. I’ll report back if I regret listening to you or not. 😂
@@EmilyWheatley ok you were right I love it. I’ve had it for two days and I’ve worn it twice. I’m thinking about getting the silver one. I drink too much coffee for white though. 😂

What’s the brand on the sweater and other shirts that you wear that have that little black circle on the left chest?
Nice - but I miss your Wear vs. Style. Will that be coming back?
Hopefully someday. I was trying to do too much at once. So currently just streamlining a bit. But it is definitely in my scalable plans.
