  • Host Adrian Johnson concludes his personal trilogy of Pinoy comics greats with a celebration of the work of Alfredo Alcala. Known for his rich and emotive inking style, Alcala graced the pencils of many renowned pencilers including John Buscema, Don Newton and Gene Colan with a power here-to-before rarely seen. Alcala was also a master of comics storytelling within his right; coinciding with his personal creation Voltar in 1963. Adrian relays all this and more in this episode of 'Blerd It Out'

    Wonderful video. During the 1990s I had the pleasure of being the editor of Secret Teachings. Thanks for the free plug, and happily that particular Alfredo Alcala work is still available in many bookstores and online.

    One of my favorite Filipino artists is Gerry Taloc.

      Thanks, Sean! I dig Taloc as well. His rough ink line was perfect on those horror and war titles plus his time on the Hulk. I wonder if he ever inked John Severin as they appear really similar in line quality?

    Awesome video, lot of stuff about him I didn't know. Alcala's work on Conan is what got me started in comic collecting.

    Nestor Redondo, Alex Nino and Alfredo Alcala were among my favourite artists as a kid. Loved Alcala's inks on Buscema's Conan. Redondo I was only familiar with through the painted covers he did for SSOC. And Nino I knew because of his work in Creepie and Eerie.

    Here in Brazil, we have an amazing hardcover edition of Voltar - and other original Alcala's works - published by Pipoca & Nanquim Press. I don't know how easy should be to buy it from other country, but I recommend to anyone who likes his art at least check it out some images in publisher's website or youtube channel.

    Alcala's shading was not random, he was sculpting the figures, if you really examine the shading and how he used it, you'll be able to see it.
    It wouldn't surprise me at all if he was a sculptor.

    Your camera doesn't seem to like you
    I tried so hard to find this 'Secret Teachings' book but never could find one
    There's also Rudy Nebres, another great artist of the time that came from the philipines

    • @InazumaStudios1
      @InazumaStudios1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      diamened Of course! While I definitely dig Nebres, I'm not as huge a fan as I am of Nino, Alcala and Redondo to devote an episode to him. But I think others on TH-cam have done episodes on Nebres!

      I think you need to fix the focus of the camera because the back shelf is sharper, or perhaps move camera further a bit.
      Anyways, this trilogy is an amazing find. Amazing work! Thank you for this!

    A. Alacala has two inking styles in Conan Comics. First of this, you showed in Conan Saga. This is most energetic, influencal and majestic work of Alcala's. Other Style mainly was used on Alcalas's own pencil drawings. It was good enough but it was not my favorite.
