Thank you so much for the comprehensive lesson on nutrients! Until recently, I had been using General Hydroponics N, P-K and CalMag ever since I watched your Dec '17 video on mixing nutrients. Then I realized that in doing this my plants weren't getting the micro stuff in the total package mixes. And I've always wondered which is the best combo of %'s. There are so many out there and every other grower uses different brands - npk levels. I've got a half dozen different ones and am never confident mixing them up - but I do use a tds meter at low levels and mix into rain water. You don't hear enough good stuff about Jack's products and seeing the vigor of your orchids along your instructions makes me think that's the way to go. Thank you for making this video.

I use water from the dehumidifiers to water my Orchids with. I rinse them off first with plain dehumidifier water and one Tucker tote and after the leaves and roots and bark is wet their growing in clay pots I soak them in my fertilizer mixture. I wet the leaves and Roots so they full your feed while they soak for about a half an hour or more. I mix up the premix stuff so if I have some that are getting new Roots new leaves and are setting new spikes I will mix up the high nitrogen fertilizer with some with the middle number but never exceed or give the regular dose it's always weaker even when it's combined so say it should use three of the little spoonfuls I use one of each. I also add Epsom salts to my Tucker tote fertilizer water and I think the big key ingredient is the seaweed fertilizer since I started using that my orchids are so much nicer and all my other plants are doing great. After my orchids soak for the day I have over 30 I then take that water and during the winter I was putting it on my pansies growing outside when I used up all that was needed for my houseplants of which I have a lot maybe a hundred. I also kept the humidifier going all winter and in the dining living area the humidity level was about 60% but the heat was only at 68 degrees. My orchids are in on the East window all but four of them are still blooming and setting new spikes and at the same time getting new roots. I also have another thing that I got somewhere that has trace minerals in I put a eye dropper or two in the 4 gallons or so of fertilized water. Rick is the best.... my pansies that grew outside this winter by the way or more beautiful than any I've ever had that wintered over. It's already the middle of June and they're still blooming full of blossoms the plants are healthy thick green leaves usually by this time pansies have given up the ghost because of the Heat! And my coleus that I brought in for the winter I'm sure the humidity helped but I think giving them the leftovers from the orchids as far as the fertilized water help make them full in Lush and healthy all winter. I took cuttings from them this spring and I also grew some coleus from seed and now I have coleus coming out my ears.

Rick I found your videos while researching orchid care and I am happy I did. I used to have a lot of orchids particularly cattleyas, phalaenopsis, dendrobiums and vandals. All the cattleyas, 90% of the phalaenopsis and dendrobium died, because almost 2 years ago I had pneumonia and was hospitalized and unable to care for them because the doctors advised against being outside in the dirt and dust. I had to rely on others to care for them and they were overwatered during the cooler time of the year in Miami..Now I am slowly starting over with phalaenopsis and vanda. Your explanations and insights into orchid nutrients is priceless for me. Most of my orchids are hanging in my mango tree and they love it. Some are in clay pots in lava rocks and wood chips. But they all need the proper nutrients now that I can care for them again. Thanks for all the advice and the care you display by sharing all that you have learnt, that is truly exceptional

Wonderful video, Rick! I never get tired of hearing the passion in your voice when you talk about growing! It's definitely going in my "Orchid Growing Videos To Keep Forever" playlist. :) I use a 5 gallon bucket to mix my nutrients. I made a new batch today and wrote down the amounts that I used. If someone wanted a 30% (40 ppm) ratio of Calcium-Nitrate, like you are currently using, it takes about 1/16th of a teaspoon for 5 gallons. Then, to achieve the 70% (90 ppm) ratio of Jack's 5-12-26, it would be about 1/4 tsp + 1/16th of a tsp. To achieve 20 ppm of Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom Salt), it's about 1/8th tsp. If you're using a smaller amount of water (1 gallon) it would be just a little pinch as you said. I hope that doesn't confused everyone! One quick question: I am growing my lone Cymbidium in a mix of Chunky peat, coconut husks and hydrocks. Can I use Jack's Part A/Part B mix with this media? Please give my best to Jan. I'm so glad to hear that she continuing to respond well to the treatment and is excited about starting her new career! Stay in touch and keep feeding those hungry plants, LOL! Love, Caro

@@rickl.orchids My orchids have really responded to the new fertilizer mix. I'm so glad that I decided to give it a try. :) My cymbidium is doing much better, too. I left it upstairs in a semi-heated room this winter. I didn't fertilize it at all until I saw a new growth starting. Hopefully, this season I will be able to get it to rebloom. I haven't moved anywhere and don't plan to anytime soon! I love my mountains too much! :) With heartfelt prayers and blessings always! Caroline

Hi Rick! It's so good to see another great feeding video by you... but of course, you must take care of yourself and your wife first. I am glad to hear that Jan is doing well and the strength and bravery you both show is uplifting. My South Florida collection has been doing well thanks to all I have learned from you and I keep you both in my heart and prayers daily as I enjoy my orchids. Your wealth of knowledge on plant feeding and growth is a great asset to this community and I thank you from the 💚 for sharing it.
I also just wanted to say that I picked up a TDS meter for about $15 on Amazon nearly 3 years ago and it's still in great working order.🙂
For those of you that cannot collect rainwater, I would also say that a RODI water filtration system has been a really great, and not an expensive investment for our family. We got it for a reef tank but now know exactly what is in our drinking water, our fresh and salty fish tanks, and what we give the plants. The fish, corals, plants, and people in my house are happier and healthier because we all get exactly what we need and nothing that we don't from our water... and we haven't purchased plastic water bottles for years!💯 Disclaimer: Nothing (most importantly, humans) will thrive on only 100% pure water and when we are stripping it of everything, we need to remember that essential minerals and nutrients must be added back.😉

Hi RIck, glad to hear Jan is on her last treatment and going strong! Blessing to both of you!
Thank you for the informative video. I always watch it a couple of times and read the comments too. So helpful!
LOL, I was using the magnifying glass and stopping the video to check on the fertilizer NPK on your containers! So just want to make sure...in your 6 gallon water..you use Jacks 15-0-0 @ 40 pmpm and Jacks 5-12-26 @ 90 pmpm too come up with 130 pmpm. Then every 2 of 3rd feeding you use 15 to 25 pmpm Edson salt or seaweed to get to 145 - 155 pmpm.
I’m hoping with this new formula I’ll get my orchids to thrive and bloom!🌸🌸🌸. I did get about 3 blooms this year but some has never bloomed or got bud blast. Thanks again
As the season get hotter your feeding pmpm gets higher (max of 200 pmpm)

    • @rickl.orchids

Kath Bergkvist ppm measurement is milligrams of dissolved minerals in one litter of water. 1 L= 1 000 000 mg ( parts per million) 25 mg /L = 25 ppm. Even if you have 6 Gal TDS looks on how much in 1 L. I hope it helps.

I stumbled on your channel. I bought my one and only orchid maybe two months ago. I ran across a channel that talked about the issues I have with her, I learned that an orchid bought from a grocery store or Lowe’s is sick before it leaves the store. I took my girl out of her pot and found all her roots rotted. I have her in a water culture but she is spending the night out of the water. I am glad I found you. I have been looking at so many channel on orchids and I don’t know where to turn. How often do you give your girls their nutrition? I live in Corpus Christi. TX and it is getting warm. My girl stays in the house in bright indirect light. Please let me know what to do to get her roots back. Thank you 🙏. Your plants are gorgeous.

Really loved seeing your paph in bloom! Such a beautiful flower. Thanks for another great video about nutrients. I have started using kelp every other week on my orchids. I am curious as to how this procedure will affect my orchids. I am using CalMag and MSU alternating with the kelp. The orchids are looking much healthier since I have started the CalMag/MSU routine early this growing season. Plants that I thought were heading for the compost bin have sprouted and are even beginning to produce some spikes. So.....thanks for helping me consider the impact of nutrients on my plant (not only orchids) growth. Hope you and your wife continue to have a good spring. I can't wait to see you move the orchids back outdoors.

I’ve watched many of your videos already, and I’ve taken notes. I just ordered the ph and tds meters, the Better Gro, CalMag and Liquid Seaweed from Amazon. Don’t tell me you’re changing! 🥺☺️🤣
Just returned from Lowe’s with lava rock, river rock, two clay orchid pots (w/holes), a couple of cattleya and a vanda (all 3 in bags).
Thank you so much for guiding the way in orchid growing. You are so kind, and easy to listen to, and also know how to explain the details without going over our heads. I’m so glad Jan is finishing her treatments and back at work, that’s wonderful news! I do hate to hear your Parkinson’s is progressing. I’m a cardiac nurse, and have always dealt with heart disease, pacemakers and defibrillators, so, I’m not up on Parkinson’s disease. When I heard you discuss it in an earlier video, I was amazed at all you do. Just know that I’m praying for you and Jan, and pray your good days ahead number more than your bad ones, and your orchids bring beauty to every day.

I’ve listened to this video a couple more times. I understand you went to mainly using Jacks due to the formulations having calcium nitrate instead of the nitrogen being from a urea or monocle (sp?). I saw in your June 2018 video, you discussed the difference Garden Lime was making in the leaves and growth, providing an increase in calcium. If we start with your old regime, can we increase the calcium and nitrogen to the levels you use currently, with the Garden Lime, BetterGrow, cal mag, liquid seaweed? (until we use up these products). Or, should we get the Jacks part A and B to supplement the additional nitrogen and calcium? Love the slipper violet! Thank you again for your patience and knowledge ☺️. God bless you both today!

Thank you so much for sharing Rick. I've not been able to find products with fully formed formulations and have been experimenting with a vast array of disparate nutrient products. I've almost arrived at the magic elixir for my plants but watering still feels like more science project than gardening. I was thrilled when I looked up Jack's formulations and realized these two products would solve most of my mixology woes. Alas, the notice on Jack's website says "Oh SNAP, our Canadian shipping option is broken" (Please tell me this wasn't an April Fool's joke on your neighbours to the north!!) Need to mix up a new batch of nutrients, so best get back to the cauldron. Double, double toil and trouble ..... 🌺

I have started soaking my orchids, before I was using a sprayer and semi water culture. I grow mainly in growstones with a bit of lava rock and milled sphagnum moss. I have come to the conclusion that the roots didn't have enough time to absorb enough nutrients. The mottling is only on the older growth. Thank you for all your helpful knowledge, I now have a better understanding of my plants nutritional needs. I wish you and Jan all the best, God bless you both.

Thanks Rick - I think I've got all these 'jigsaw pieces' ok now and this just made them fit better - the picture is now complete! The only difference is that I'm using CalMAG for extra Magnesium rather than the Epsom salts. I've been adding the Calcium Nitrate to the feed for a while now at about the same % as you just said, but it's good to know that % can increase as the season moves on. My Seaweed extract is used a bit too strong from what you've said, but I don't do it often. Nice one!!!!

    • @rickl.orchids
      @rickl.orchids  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

……thanks Roger, with your set up, using MSU, adding 15 - 30% calcium nitrate will make a big difference in the growth of them, use it just like I use the Jacks and Calcium Nitrate......I think..the kelp/seaweed is best in small amounts and I use it more often as temps increase......The main thing is the extra calcium....The additional calcium will correct any stalled, slow growing, poor rooted, or never bloomed plants get back on cycle......With a stronger cell structure, ..it allows them to absorb other nutrients better..
...Ive heard you say for a while that you thought your collection could use more Nitrogen...…..mine is the same, I agree with you...……But its hard to increase the N with out increasing the entire amount of your mix, and feeding too high of PPM.....Using 2 part system.....you can increase the N with out going to high overall...…..makes a huge difference with root growth and preventing salt buildup in your pots...…..Its the inevitable next step for orchid growing......makes the plants grow stronger, hydrate better, …..which in turn is less work for us growers......

I have been thinking so much about where I should start with this. Would you be able to help me with any tips for my situation? I have meters, seaweed and cal mag on order which should arrive in a week or 2 (I live on a small island in the Caribbean). I just checked with my garden store and they have espoma garden lime and I have better gro orchid plus on hand. I do not have access to Jacks here and as I mentioned I have all those others on order. My orchids live outside. I have a 2 hanging Vandas (one in sudden dire straights right now losing leaves at great speed I think due to needing cal mag), phals in bark, dens in bark or moss, and oncidiums in bark or moss. I so want to get this right! I've kept them alive but I want them to thrive! Thanks so much for any advice.

…...always look to Mother Nature for growing answer's...….orchids growing under or on trees get exposed to lots of nutrients, from dripping sap, and other nutrients sloughed off of the tree...its how they feed in nature....An orchid that's on a porch or under a roof overhang...that are not under trees….are not exposed to the same nutrient's and will struggle unless given supplements.....Vandas are one of those orchids that don't have much of a reserve system......orchids with bulbs, canes, etc, have larger storage reserves and can deal with a lean diet on occasion...…...Vandas, & Phals, are some that don't have any storage for reserves, all they have are leaves, no bulbs or canes... so they require a very steady consistent supply of nutrients...…...or they drop lower leaves and reabsorb flower spikes.....orchids like Vandas require a lot of nitrogen, and equal amounts of calcium...to grow well...….also because of their lack of reserves these orchid's usually have larger or more extensive root systems...….so they decline fast if they are deprived of adequate nutrients or skip meals to often

@@rickl.orchids thank you very much. All of my potted orchids live under trees and vandas are hanging under trees.... However we've just come through our driest time of the year and I think they've suffered from lack of natural rain and as you said nutrients being washed onto them. I will be implementing daily small feeds with their watering (they dry quickly here in our heat). Hopefully I will get the cal mag and seaweed soon and they will flourish. I've just been out inspecting as I water and noticed 2 of my phals have flower spikes just popping out! I've never had a phal rebloom for me! Super happy!! All the best and I hope you have a wonderful day!

Hi Rick, Rixey here is Bessemer, AL. Really appreciate this video and all the others! Bought a pH meter and a TDS meter, my tap water is like this: pH 8.4-8.5 so I added a half pinch of citric acid powder, dropped to 4.5 or so. Had some 2 gallon tubs so poured half of water off, refilled and wound up with 6.4-6.5, left it there. TDS starts off consistently at 84-85 and I add stuff from that point; I don't mind the arithmetic but don't want to have to keep up with this process, so going to buy a water softener to lower the solids and hopefully even the pH. Thanks again for the logic & process! Hope you and Jan are doing well.

Dorinda....its sounds confusing, but its not.....orchids are simple to grow, and I hope over the next few weeks we can clear up any confusion... ..…..the secret to growing orchids is feed them tiny amount's as often as you can...…..the more frequent you can feed them...…..the better they will grow. Air flow is key to how fast they dry out......and thus how often they can be fed......if that makes sense....I feed low amounts......130ppm...….and I feed them several times a week......Better to give them lots of tiny meals, all the time...... than one or two big ones every so often.....feel free to ask any questions you like...…..happy to help.

Bless you, Rick. I am glad your wife is doing well.
A little background. I have been trying to grow orchids for about a year. Mostly I kill them. Three of my phals are dehydrated. Only one has just started to grow roots. None of the roots have the velamen. They are in water. I have a stub no leaves with a stock with 5 buds. I just wanted to get them through the winter. I feed the way Orchid Whisper does. I now believe I overwater. I use T5 lights. Will you answer some questions for me?
I never use a full gallon of fertilizer. How long can I keep mixed fertilizer?
I bought 2 phals and a cymbidium in the past 3 months. I am afraid to repot them in fresh medium in the spring. I think they need repotting because the roots are coming out the bottom of the pot. I am waiting for spring. I have always brought them home and repotted my orchids. After that, the roots start to rot. Is there anything I can do to keep this from happening? I haven't had good luck with leca, lava rock or any other medium. Is there something I can do to prevent or help with transplant shock?
I think as far as medium goes, for now, I should repot in the same medium. The only thing I do know is that I have good quality moss and bark.
Thank you for your time. Maybe sometime we could have a hydroponics conversation?

…..store bought Phals are a perfect example of Calcium deficiency.....they are calcium hogs and especially need it for new root growth......most are planted in bark or moss, and after several months the media breaks down and the ph. drops......once the ph. goes below 6.0......they cant absorb calcium, even if there is plenty of it around them...With out calcium.....the roots die back and the plant cant hydrate or absorb nutrients properly...…
…..If you buy a orchid and after you get it home, you find it has poor roots, the best thing is to repot them...…..place them in fresh bark with some dolomitic lime...…..Feed rootless or poor rooted plants very lightly.....….Orchids are very hardy, and they really want to live and grow......give them good light, as pure as water as you can find, feed them small amounts as often as you can and make sure they always have calcium around them...…….and they will grow very fast.

Rick L. Orchids can I sprinkle the lime on top of the roots and medium? Or should I mix it in with the new medium? Will lime burn the roots?
Should I be using a different form of calcium other than CalMag? When I use the CalMag I follow the directions on the bottle. As far as water goes, I only use rain water or distilled water. Can I start feeding the way I did last spring? It is my understanding I should decrease the amount of feedings in the winter.
Thank you so very much for you direction and time.

@@danielebougher9249 …..the good folks at Better-Gro orchids told me they mix a granular dolomitic garden lime in with their media when they repot in the spring time.....I started doing the same.....it has worked wonders for my collection...I use a granular dolomitic lime as well..….its slow releasing, and isn't a hot type of lime......it doesn't really raise the PH...….it just maintains it around neutral 7.0.....it has 21% calcium and 10% magnesium......I sprinkle it on my pots over the media about every 5weeks or so...…..I don't avoid the roots with it...….but It gets on them.....and Ive seen no issues
…....As for feeding in winter....I feed mine every time I give them water...….In nature hanging on a tree......an orchid would get nutrients every time it rained.....

Thanks Rick. All my orchids have been declining in health for some time. I’ve just converted them all to SH as I think that will suit our dry hot environment here in Aus better. In the process I’ve discovered that the popular & common liquid fertiliser (for orchids) that I’ve been using hits the high 7’s for ph, even before its in contact with the leca. So I’m hoping this is part of the reason they’ve been declining. Thanks for the info in your videos, I’ve learned a lot and hopefully we are now on the road to recovery.

I watched this vid back in April when you posted it and it motivated me to get a TDS meter. I finally ordered mine and found out that my tap water is at 94 ppm and my feed solution as normally mixed is at (current batch) is at 227 ppm 😳 No wonder I have so much salt buildup! I’m going to have to find a way to get a better water source. Being in Colorado we don’t get enough rain regularly for me to rely on that as a source so I’m thinking I might have to take a trip to the mountains occasionally to stock up on stream water? There is a reservoir close to me but the water temps here in town, in the summer get high enough to develop algae blooms, I don’t want to introduce that to my pots. Our mountain stream water stays cold enough I think it will prevent the introductions of algae and such. Thanks for the vid, from myself and my orchids! 😊
