Dude I'm a Gremio's fan since I was just a kid and if you had spoken in terms of Brazil, I would agree that it is the best rivalry ever, simply the best derby in the country. But when it comes to the world, we must never forget Boca Juniors vs River Plate and Celtics vs Rangers. Their rivalry and games are massively strong as well. im not saying they're bigger, but they're also strong. That's for me, the Top 3, in the battle for the Greatest Derby of All-time.
My father's family has been composed of only colorados since the club's foundation. And on my mother's side, the only gremista turned into it by marriage, as my aunt didn't root for any of them but starting rooting for gremio when she married my gremista uncle.

I'm a gremio fan and I'm happy for someone to talk about grenal, both gremio and inter are giants, gremio has 3 continentals, inter has 2, gremio has 1 club world cup and inter too. In short, they are 2 traditional Brazilian giants and you can be sure that every grenal has a fight, then research the Villasanti incident in a grenal. Currently none of the teams are really competitive but every now and then a team appears, the other interesting thing is that Luiz Suarez played for Gremio and Forlan played for Inter, two Uruguayan idols. You can spend days researching everything about these two teams and it's worth it, Gremio and Inter are bigger than many European teams, having many more titles such as continental and even club world cups or national cups or leagues.
Which is funny for me, is the fact that the rest of the country see both teams as "just two clubs in the country". Even though many ppl respects them, I believe the majority are not going to treat them as "Giants". Very unfair for both of them. For me it's simply the best derby Brazil has ever seen.

as to right now, Inter's current coach Roger Machado is a 90's Grêmio's idol. gremistas are so upset they recently pissed on and cemented an homage for Roger in their stadium. since Roger began working for Inter last year, the team got so much better and even were on a streak of 16 games without losing - including an Gre-Nal. i'm a die hard colorado supporter, and i was at the 443 derby, its very common for groups of fans to go to porto alegre when there is a grenal, and while we were entering the city, we had to pass right by the gremio stadium, where people usually tailgate before heading to the game (this time was at our home), and when they noticed that we were a Inter group, they started throwing rocks and metal bars towards us, i'm not saying that its something that only gremio does, but so just you know that the rivalry is very agressive
The guy in the photo is Seu Noé, an Internacional LEGEND of the stands. He was present at every Internacional home game for decades, always dressing himself as a gaucho for it. He sadly passed in 2020, but he's still remembered by everyone who ever watched a game at the Beira Rio.
As a Gremista, i do believe it is on the top 2 rivalry in America. Boca vs River being the first and GreNal being the second. And for the peeps who say the Derby is bigger, they can't comprehend the size of GreNal to us Gaúchos. The derby cannot rival the GreNal because the rivalry in the derby only exists between fans, not between institutions and fans in the case of the GreNal. Neither Grêmio nor Inter would ever win a game against any other team if it meant that their biggest rival had the chance to win the championship because of it. This doesn't happen in the Derby rivalry, just look at the 2024 and 2023 championships for example. Another aspect of the GreNal being bigger, is the cultural side of it. In the South you are either a Gremista or you are a Colorado, there is no middle ground. When anyone say that they support any other team outside the State of Rio Grande do Sul, their opinion is dismissed and they're immediately insulted. When you start dating, both families will ALWAYS ask "Gremista or Colorado?" Even colors are a matter of dispute. There is an internal Grêmio Constitution that players & managers cannot wear anything that remotely refers to red.

yes! since Inter's stadium Beira-Rio is in the southern part of the city and Grêmio's Arena is in the northern part, you can orient yourself by the color of each bus line - the buses that go to the south are red, and those that go north are blue

Fantastic material! Just one small correction about the Inter's history: The family of the Poppes came originally from netherlands, not Italy. First came to Recife (Pernambuco), then the family moved to Rio de Janeiro where the brothers were born, but then they've gone to São Paulo as children. The context which raised the idea of Italian origin came from a journalist fan of Grêmio during the 40's, because of the WWII. He created the theory that the Poppe were from a Italian family to balance with the german origin of Grêmio. That invention got so deep in the people of Rio Grande do Sul that even Internacional thought for some time it was the truth.

When I was about 10 years old, I fell in love with a girl who convinced me to cheer for Internacional. When you are introduced to your girlfriend's father, his first question to you is whether you are a Colorado or a Gremista, not to mention that the Grenal starts a month before the game, starting with the possible lineup of each team and their position in the table of the respective championship. Gremio has won the last seven Gaucho championships and if they win the 2025 championship they will equal Internacional's record, which has won eight consecutive times, and that is why winning this championship is very special. In Brazil, it is one of the championships with the lowest audience outside the state of RS. However, for us it is do or die. Your team's victory will dictate how your week will be, whether you make fun of your Colorado friends or get made fun of by them. I really appreciate your video. It is a shame that our Grenal is so unknown outside of Brazil.

In Uruguay, there were two parties: the Blancos, who were also Blues, and the Colorados. During the period mentioned, Rio Grande do Sul had a cultural homogeneity.
The Blues and the Colorados fought in a war in the region.
The founders of Grêmio and Inter were from these political factions.
These political divisions inspired rivalries and influenced the culture and regional identity, also reflecting on the cultural and social traditions of the state.
It is interesting to note that this political duality echoes to this day in the rivalry between football clubs, such as Grêmio (associated with the liberals/Ximangos) and Internacional (associated with the conservatives/Maragatos).
The political history of Rio Grande do Sul, therefore, had a significant impact on the formation of local culture and its sporting traditions.
This long-standing rivalry between the Rio Grande do Sul teams is currently manifested in sport through Grêmio and Internacional.

as to right now, Inter's current coach Roger Machado is a 90's Grêmio's idol. gremistas are so upset they recently pissed on and cemented an homage for Roger in their stadium. since Roger began working for Inter last year, the team got so much better and even were on a streak of 16 games without losing - including an Gre-Nal. GRENAL RIVALRY IS MORE ALIVE THAN EVER
If Roger leads them this year to stop Grêmio's attempt at the eight-peat in the Gaúchão, I cannot even IMAGINE how the scenes down there are going to be.

i'm a die hard colorado supporter, and i was at the 443 derby, its very common for groups of fans to go to porto alegre when there is a grenal, and while we were entering the city, we had to pass right by the gremio stadium, where people usually tailgate before heading to the game (this time was at our home), and when they noticed that we were a Inter group, they started throwing rocks and metal bars towards us, i'm not saying that its something that only gremio does, but so just you know that the rivalry is very agressive

The guy in the photo is Seu Noé, an Internacional LEGEND of the stands. He was present at every Internacional home game for decades, always dressing himself as a gaucho for it. He sadly passed in 2020, but he's still remembered by everyone who ever watched a game at the Beira Rio.

As a Gremista, i do believe it is on the top 2 rivalry in America. Boca vs River being the first and GreNal being the second.
And for the peeps who say the Derby is bigger, they can't comprehend the size of GreNal to us Gaúchos.
The derby cannot rival the GreNal because the rivalry in the derby only exists between fans, not between institutions and fans in the case of the GreNal.
Neither Grêmio nor Inter would ever win a game against any other team if it meant that their biggest rival had the chance to win the championship because of it. This doesn't happen in the Derby rivalry, just look at the 2024 and 2023 championships for example.
Another aspect of the GreNal being bigger, is the cultural side of it. In the South you are either a Gremista or you are a Colorado, there is no middle ground. When anyone say that they support any other team outside the State of Rio Grande do Sul, their opinion is dismissed and they're immediately insulted. When you start dating, both families will ALWAYS ask "Gremista or Colorado?"
Even colors are a matter of dispute. There is an internal Grêmio Constitution that players & managers cannot wear anything that remotely refers to red.

Great video friend, I believe that the main factor in the rivalry being so intense and different from others in Brazil, is that Rio Grande do Sul is far from the center of the country and consequently from the mainstream media, I'm from Colorado, that is, an Internacional fan, I became a fan because of my father and I hope my son is also a Colorado fan. Grenal is something unique in football, the city is divided between the reds and the blues, even the bus lines had to have their colors changed to avoid fan fights! And obviously the most famous event is the day that Grêmio fans set fire to Internacional's stadium.
yes! since Inter's stadium Beira-Rio is in the southern part of the city and Grêmio's Arena is in the northern part, you can orient yourself by the color of each bus line - the buses that go to the south are red, and those that go north are blue

Fantastic material! Just one small correction about the Inter's history: The family of the Poppes came originally from netherlands, not Italy. First came to Recife (Pernambuco), then the family moved to Rio de Janeiro where the brothers were born, but then they've gone to São Paulo as children. The context which raised the idea of Italian origin came from a journalist fan of Grêmio during the 40's, because of the WWII. He created the theory that the Poppe were from a Italian family to balance with the german origin of Grêmio. That invention got so deep in the people of Rio Grande do Sul that even Internacional thought for some time it was the truth.

This rivalry is absolutely rooted in culture. My family has been Grêmio supporters for generations. When I was about 10 years old, I fell in love with a girl who convinced me to cheer for Internacional. When my family discovered that I had switched sides, they prohibited me from eating at home until I changed my mind.
Another fun fact is that my father is proud of never having worn a red-colored piece of clothing in his entire life.

Great video. Our rivalry is definitely the biggest in Brazil, not because of the number of fans, but because our state is divided in two on the days of the Grenal. When you are introduced to your girlfriend's father, his first question to you is whether you are a Colorado or a Gremista, not to mention that the Grenal starts a month before the game, starting with the possible lineup of each team and their position in the table of the respective championship. Gremio has won the last seven Gaucho championships and if they win the 2025 championship they will equal Internacional's record, which has won eight consecutive times, and that is why winning this championship is very special. In Brazil, it is one of the championships with the lowest audience outside the state of RS. However, for us it is do or die. Your team's victory will dictate how your week will be, whether you make fun of your Colorado friends or get made fun of by them. I really appreciate your video. It is a shame that our Grenal is so unknown outside of Brazil.
