This is a wonderful video and archive of the best quotes about a movement art-form that I love! I can feel the joy and hope in all that speak in this video and it gives me hope for the future of Capoeira

A beautiful work that reflects well our Capoeira and the struggle of our people, the struggle of humanity for a society where differences are celebrated, where the greatest good is life, where peace is an exercise of each day and that is achieved through dialogue, understanding and love. Gratitude to the educators who participated in the film, to Capoeira for All and to the International Slavery Museum for Black History Month. E vamos Gingando pela Paz!

2:10 - the lady capoeirista mentions what capoeira experts (especially "mestres", or "masters of capoeira") call "mandinga" or "mandingueiro" - which relates to deceptiveness, trickery, cunning, in your capoeira fight-play. You need to try something in your roda fights to make the opponent think you are doing something but then when you do your finishing move immediately afterward - the opponent realizes that it is too late when it is done.

Thank you for your explaining. Yes, the magic she speaks about is Mandinga however it has a deeper meaning. What you defined as trickery or street-smartness is Malandragem.

When I lived in Rio I knew nothing about capoeira. From my balcony at night I would hear a sound - an instrument I had never heard. It was the berimbou, the instrument of capoeira. I heard people chanting and clapping and was intrigued! I became transfixed from the first moment! Surprisingly, my husband at the time (Paulista) had never told about this. The history behind this apparent 'dance' is ingenious. Strangely enough, I am now in Liverpool, a an important port of call for the disgusting slave trade, as the museum will attest. I would love to do capoeira, but am afraid am too old - I'm 63!
