Exo are aliens and guardians from EXOplanet and MAMA (the tree of life) is literally their mother. It was corrupted by the Red Force (evil forces) so EXO had to flee across the Universe to not be captured.
As they were twelve the concept said that they were divided into two worlds and the day they will be reunited shall open a new world. They actually reunited in the growl era and since been chased by the Red Force across parallel universes...yes because every EXO era/album concept is parallel universe... There are a lot of theories but the main ones are easily found so check it out if you want to know more about it. 😉
“exo were ahead of their time” TRUER WORDS NEVER SPOKEN
“To truly understand EXO you need to understand that EXO debuted in 2012 -- So "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV. It is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the groups concept. From the very beginning EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet EXO and they came to Earth with super powers to protect the Tree of Life. Each of the members has a super power that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one if not all of them using their powers. Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer," so as a member of EXO they are outside the ordinary. The groups concept comes from the real term exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they are stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents.
Now you also need to know that in the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. (So the story in the beginning is explaining the groups legend and why they are split into two groups and what they have been sent to Earth to do.) So to really understand their full origin story you have to watch both the K and the M version of "MAMA," not just the K version, because even though both the K and M versions of "Mama" feature all 12 of the members, the K version focuses on the K members and their powers and the M version focuses on the M members and their powers. Plus, this is a good opportunity for you to hear what the song sounds like in both Mandarin and Korean. (I encourage you to watch EXO-M's version of "MAMA" even if you don't react to it and really listen to the introduction story at the beginning. Now that you know a little more about what it is trying to tell you, you will probably start to understand more of why EXO does the things they do and what makes them so special.)
However, since then 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group (short answer to focus on their solo work back in China) but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 of the members. Kris and Luhan left in 2014 and Tao left in 2015.) However, now, because they no longer have enough Chinese members they no longer do separate promotions where the group is split up, but they still produce all their songs in both Korean and Mandarin they just now promote all as one big group EXO with 9 members. Their fandom name is EXO-L because L falls right between K and M and I like to think it stands for Love. 😍
In Korean MAMA is a term they use to address a leader or King or Queen. Its a term of reverence and respect. It's similar to saying "Your majesty." If you watch very many historical Korean dramas you will hear the characters call the royal family and especially the head of the royal family or leader "Mama." So in this song they are speaking to the leader or deity who sent them to Earth, essentially asking, "Now that I'm here, Your Majesty what should I do? How do I fulfill what you have sent me to do? etc."
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in their MVs here is a list of the members and what their special power is.
The members powers are:
EXO-K
Suho : water (Fun fact: did you know that Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO,? That's why as the leader of EXO, Kim Jun Myeo's stage name is Suho)
Baekhyun : Light
Chanyeol : fire
D.O : earth (which gives him strength )
Kai : teleportation
Sehun : Wind
EXO-M
Xiumin : snow/ice (frost)
Lay : healing
Chen : thunder/lightning/electricity (As you can see, Xiumin and Chen were given stage names that sounded more Chinese so they would fit in better in EXO-M)
The Chinese members that are no longer part of the group:
Kris: Flight (He was the leader of EXO-M when they used to promote as two separate groups.)
Luhan: telekinesis (control things with his mind)
Tao: Time Control"
This explanation is not my own. I just think it is a very good explanation about EXO.
Allot of people haven’t really noticed that all 12 members are present in this MV even though EXO K is doing the korean version of “MAMA”...both parties (EXO K and EXO M) deserve the credit not just EXO K! Yes, this was when they showed all the members superpowers...Alternate Universe (EXOplanet) / Tree of Life is where they’re from!
MAMA in korean means your majesty or your highness. Look up the sub lyrics to it, its a very meaningful song. And ya'll have to react to the exoM version cuz it shows the other 6 members powers. Also react to exoK What is Love mv

MAMA means "You'r Highness or majesty" in Korean. And in the song they are asking why trust, love and compassion are diminishing on Earth. That's why they are here, to spread love on Earth. Hence EXOs slogan: Let's Love!

Mama is so unique that when it came out , it wasn’t as popular as growl. But I really like it.
MAMA is like Your Majesty. this song is about EVERYTHING. the chorus: careless careless, shoot anonymous, heartless, mindless, no one cares about me. it's about being powerless against the government, war, famine. this song resonates because of the meaning. In the US today think about that chorus. people in power shoot first and ask questions later.
