  • ▶Title: Dissipative approaches to quantum metrology
▶Speaker: Aashish Clerk (University of Chicago)
▶Abstract: Quantum metrology seeks to harness the power of entangled quantum states to enhance basic measurement and sensing tasks. I'll discuss work on how tailored dissipative processes can be harnessed both to prepare many-body entanglement that is useful for metrology, and for designing dissipative "time-reversed" sensing protocols that allow one to make use of entanglement even in regimes where state readout is highly imperfect. In many cases, dissipative sensing processes can have large, parametric advantages over their unitary counterparts. I will focus on entangled spin squeezed states of large ensembles of two-level atoms or qubits (a class of states that have been studied in a variety of different AMO platforms, and that are actively being pursued in solid state systems).
