This Roman tribune is a veteran of many battles and killed many people. However if you watch the movie, he told Pilate that all he wanted was a day without death. It shocked him that Jesus knew about his conversation with Pilate and what he truly wanted. Powerful scene.

What's so neat is before he wanted certainty, peace, and a day without death in regards to the battles he fought as a soldier but when he's talking with Jesus he wants it spiritually.

Not only this but right there and then….Clavius knew that Jesus IS GOD INCARNATE! No one could’ve known on what Clavius told Pilate for it was a private conversation between a soldier and his leader and Jesus knowing this means that Jesus is no ordinary mortal.

"I don't even know what to ask." When I first watched this movie and he said this, it brought me to tears. Imagining myself having the chance to meet Jesus face to face, I imagine my first words would be exactly the same thing. I have so many questions, I wouldn't even know where to begin. Questions about things in the Bible, in the world around us... the list goes on. And yet somehow, something in me is still convinced that he is good, that he is worthy of my trust, even when there's so much that I don't understand. I am clinging to the hope that one day, I will meet him face to face and will get the chance to ask him everything that's been on my heart. In the meantime, I can only follow him step by step, trusting that he is good.

I would ask: "Why is it that you left such a confusing mess of your time on earth through the very flawed gospels? Why didn't you renounce slavery when you had the chance? Why in the old testament did you as God commit genocide and sanction child murder amongst other horrors?"

This was a good movie; I really like that it focused on the characters and plot and not on preaching a message. So many Christian themed movies are garbage because they try to preach instead of tell a story. I actually like how Clavius still leaves even after this conversation in doubt. It demonstrates the real struggle people have with accepting of something like the idea of a savior, even if they see it with their own eyes. It is a very hard thing to overcome, all the world you know, everything you were taught to believe, everything you family and friends and cultures told you. Even if the lord of all is right in front of you; the entire weight of the world is on your back. And this movie and this scene really drive that point home.

A Roman centurion and a Savior. Even though it is only a few short minutes, Clavius understands that this man before him is so much more. Jesus looked deep into his heart, knows who he is and what he can be. His knowing smile when He says holding his shoulder, “a day without death” and looking with love and compassion for Clavius. That is the moment this war torn, broken and beaten soldier was made whole again. That is where he believed in a man that was his Savior and friend.

This scene is extraordinary. Imagine sitting with Christ in the hours before his ascension. What would you say to him? But thinking a bit more, why do we need to imagine that when He is with us right now in reality and he said, if I don't go then He (the Holy Spirit) won't come. So we have more now than we would have had if we were there, but all the same...

This man, Clavius, was never the same again.
Everyone who knows Jesus sees how his life will never be the same in any possible way.
Jesus reveals the truth, and the only possible solution: love.
I often wonder what Clavius, a patrician man from a good family in Rome with such a perfect and complete military record, would do after abandoning that old life full of glory and empty riches.... but that after all they had been all his life, to follow the teachings of Jesus.

As a kid, I would needlessly kill insects, shoot small birds with my BB gun, play violent video games, draw very graphic and violent stick man drawings, watch scary movies, and had consistent nightmares where looking back I was being attacked by demons. Then one day, through God, I realized all of that was evil. Complete 180 degree change. No more violence, no more scary movies, no more evil. I won't even so much as kill an insect anymore. My only exception to the rule is if the insect or animal is actively attacking me, in which case I still reluctantly kill it. It pains my heart.

  • @cptcm5485
    @cptcm5485 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

A few points I want to add on this scene: First, Clavius is obviously so captivated by Jesus Himself after having traveled with Him and His disciples that his own curiosity is awaken. He's never met any being like this one here. Humans have a proclivity to yearn for truth, goodness, and beauty. And I think Clavius sees these things in Jesus such as the Roman religion could never possess.
Second, when Clavius speaks about the day he helped in Jesus' crucifixion, I think this is a prefigurement to the Sacrament of Confession. Clavius is opening himself up completely and allowing himself to be vulnerable with Jesus just as a confessor speaks to a priest in Catholicism. After confessing to what Clavius did, Jesus simply says these words: "I know." Christ recognizes that Clavius did a horrible thing in aiding His Passion and Death but you can tell from the look on Jesus' face that He still forgives Clavius unconditionally. It's one of the greatest things you come to love about the Son of God: His unfailing ability to forgive all those who have wronged Him and still do to this day.
Third, just the way that Jesus places his Hand on Clavius' shoulder and reaches into his heart, He sees that the latter desires certainty, peace, and a day without death. Right then and there, Clavius at long last sees the Living God Made Flesh. Whatever faith and loyalty he placed in the Romans' religion is replaced with the Living Truth. The last shot of this scene as Clavius looks up to the sky, you can see that he's looking up to Heaven where God the Father resides. Clavius in that moment becomes like a child loved by the Father.

The thing here is He knows not only the question you are going to ask, but he has the answer to that same question. That's why when you are asked any question at the Gates of Heaven, be advised, your answer is known by Him before you answer. He knows...He knows what is in your heart, and He knows why your actions were what they were. This is your last chance to come clean...your last chance....

@@althesmith Correct, I have nothing to do with it. But we, all of us, answer for those times in our lives where we forgot virtue or that virtue wasn't convenient at that time. Yes, we will be questioned about those times as we all have them. These times are the ones we will, and must answer for. As I said, this is your last chance to admit your faults and ask for His forgiveness.

His death is always portrayed as sorrowful, and it was. The Jews rejected him. It was sad what he went through. Original texts say he was unrecognisable by the time he was on that cross. People mostly miss it was a VICTORY. Giving grace to the entirety of mankind. If we only believe. I choose to believe, and it makes me a better person, and if I’m wrong I’ve lost out on nothing. But if you don’t believe and I’m right forever is a very long time.

I would say remember that feelings come and go; we cannot say we trust God only when it "feels" good or easy, or thrilling. It is when we trust Him despite not feeling those things, or when we even feel nothing at all, that real love and trust come into play.
As C.S Lewis put it, "“Obedience is the key to all doors: feelings come (or don’t come) and go as God pleases. We can’t produce them at will and mustn’t try."

1 Corinthians 15; 24-28 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 For he “has put everything under his feet.”[c] Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ. 28 When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.

Faith comes when all other things fail. Then at that moment will you know that Jesus Christ is real, alive and fully God. He will return to gather his believers, you can be counted among us if you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord, God and Savior. Confess your sins before him in prayer and ask him to come into your life and save your soul.
At the end of the day it's up to you what you want to believe. No one will force you into paradise but it would be a loss to all creation if you are lost to damnation like so many others.
