I'm an Edinburgh girl born and bred, and the shop assistants are one of the best things to come out of my beautiful home city. I was just a kiddo when they were at their height. I wish I was older so I could have seen them play live at a venue in Edinburgh. What a great band this was. Thank you, Shop Assistants!
I was lucky enough to play ▶️ n the same bill as them in Edinburgh. Primal Scream were also on the bill. The Shoppies were by far the highlight of the night
I'm currently reading a book called Mayflies, about a group of Scots lads who come to Manchester for the "Festival of the 10th Summer" gig (which I attended). Whilst in Manchester they also take in the Shop Assistants at the International...and that's why I'm here. Very of its time, let's put it that way. Dreamy vocals over a too-frantic backing - very 1986. RIP the singer, Alex, though. (Oh, and the book's not great by the way).
you know what, nothing will ever sound as good as this, i know thats a really general comment, but seriously i love these, saw them support my bloody valentine when i still had long hair :)
I love this band -got an album somewhere - did a search for them on here expecting it to laugh at me and say "are you having al augh" but no someone's uploaded a shoppies clip Yay thanks so much - top stuff
My wife left me for the best man four months after I got married and she said she hoped we would still be friends after. This song sums up why we can't be and I love it.
Cracking gig at the Dovecot Arts Centre in Stockton on Tees in 1985/6- a party atmosphere. Am sure the band will remember it well. It was fun whilst it lasted!
they were one of my favourite all time bands! I still have all their singles and 12" s although I remember being a bit disappointed with the album.Safety Net was their finest hour for me,or maybe All That Ever Mattered
FAN-TAS-TIC!!! This was my favourite band at college and I snuck into their final gig in Camden pretending to be a reporter from the NME. Oh those heady 80's days! Wonder where Alex Taylor is now?
I was in deal with the young guitarist of Shop assistants last year. I owned his 1976 black Gibson S-1, 3 blade single pickups, you see in that track. For the story, the Gibson S-1 was initially endorsed by Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, as well as Carlos Santana.
I don't know who you were watching but this was filmed at Napier college (as it was then) in Edinburgh. Look at the hills in the background and look at the architecture. Nothing like the German hospital or London. I should know, I was at Napier the same time as them. Finished the year this came out. At the end of the video you can even see Edinburgh castle. Maybe you should have a wee rethink of where you were...if you were there.
I recently posted a Motorcyle Boy 'video' (Alex Taylor from The Shop Assistants singing lead). It's their cover of The Velvet Underground's Run Run Run. Thanks for uploading this video! crashsite000
The Canadian band Fuc*ed Up do an interesting cover of this (and of Looking Back) on their new comp COUPLE TRACKS. This is not meant to be an ad 0 just info. :)
Do you know what is funny? People and the press (NME) were raving a year ago about the Long Blondes who are a complete copy of The Shop Assistants, Tallulah, heavenly etc Big love from Greece
Alright...enough's a fucking enough....life is too short not to have one last flirtation with the tremendous Shop Assistants. What's it gonna take to get these guys to reform? Someone crowdfund it for fucks sake....
How are shop assistants not more known!? their debut is so amazing! Heavily underrated band.
"You leave me and I'll scratch your eyes out".... Love that line. Aways stayed win me.
Me too!

Have you seen any of the shows from potterrow? Videos are on here somewhere.
I also missed out by being born too late!
I think Dave might be playing some shows with Swell Maps soon, so you're not totally out of luck!

RIP Alex Taylor, died 2005. So sad the news only surfaced in 2020
Their title "it's up to you" on C86 vinyl is also fantastic
Their song on the C86 LP called "it's up to you" is awsome
I love this band i love proper relationship lyrics .
My wife left me for the best man four months after I got married and she said she hoped we would still be friends after. This song sums up why we can't be and I love it.
Seems to me that getting 2 back-stabbing, traitorous, deluded, wretched, useless fucks out of your life in one go was actually an unexpected bonus.
Lol! I used to drive the van.
Hope things worked out for you, Oliver.
Heartbreaking. You must really miss that guy.
Wtf
i have shop assistants records too..... can get them still in avalanche in Edinburgh

Another group I should be much more familiar with.
Those deceptively perky harmonies are great!

Thrilled to find some Shop Assistants on here, thanks for the upload :-)
Records are making a huge comeback now. Everything from the small record shop to the big retail outfit.

2:17 of pop-rock perfection... Love this band! Where are these guys today?
I imagine they're old like the rest of us.
I believe the singer died in 2005.
I got the 12 inch single of "Somewhere in China" I bought in 1991. What a great song.
saw Dum Dum Girls earlier tonight and they really reminded me of this. used to really be into this back then.
i saw this band as support jamc + inca babies 1985 electric ballroom, london ! great
It is so cool to find that song on TH-cam. They should bloody reform, even if it was only for a short while.
Great track!
Just awesome.

Pure perfect trashpop minimalism - the ideal antidote for half a decade or more of Thatcherism. Shop Assistants rock!

FAN-TAS-TIC!!! This was my favourite band at college and I snuck into their final gig in Camden pretending to be a reporter from the NME. Oh those heady 80's days! Wonder where Alex Taylor is now?
Sadly she passed away in 2006
WHY DID THEY GET RID OF THIS VERSION ON SPOTIFY :(
Mid 80s class - John Peel was playing loads of this kind of stuff, ran out of C90s on a regular basis.....
